I just skipped through a good 40 songs on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist

and

I can't put my finger on it and I've had this feeling for a good 3 or 5 years now

and

I'm in no way a sound engineer or producer

but

Why does everything sound so loud and bright and sterile?

and by everything I mean sub genres that are not even near the pop lane.

I get it that EDM has influenced a lot of stuff

but

Its feels as if there is one giant mastering house thats putting the same damn spin/shine/sound on all the songs.

Where is the grit? What happened to deeply layered sounds - right now its like you can hear every single layer at once (wall of sound?)


Am I crazy?

Nah but to be honest, I listened to the least amount of rock during the 90s after like 91, 92. Like I fucked with Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves, and there was that Judgement Night soundtrack, and there was Ice-T and Body Count. But other than that, I remember hip-hop being so expansive and covering so much ground stylistically that there wasn't much need for bringing in other sounds and cross-pollinating fan-bases like today, from what I remember.

Seems like you didn't need hooks by Adam Levine or production from Skrillex and Daftpunk to set yourself apart in the 90's

but I still buy vinyl and when I play it, even though it's routed through my computer by USB, it still sounds different

Also, not sure if spotify tins shit out or if the default EQ on it is flat.

You have the same issue when listening to soundcloud?
