>No snark, genuinely curious.

this is definitely not my area of expertise so i don't know the ends and outs of what can legally be done but a more equitable system is needed

a school shouldn't be less funded simply because it happens to be located in a blighted area

i don't think any type of privatization is the answer though

edit: so i am thinking maybe more of a shared tax base for the entire state that goes to schools equally...or something of that nature. basically creating a set cost per student for one year of education and splitting it based on the student body AND need.

it's doing something arduous and

>a school shouldn't be less funded simply because it happens to
>be located in a blighted area

is necessary, that takes into consideration a schools needs
so poorer schools should receive more funding... and not just for security
but in terms of appointing more qualified teachers, school resources, more support for additional tuition (after-school)
providing free lunches (to all so its not stigmatizing)
proper mental health (not the shit we do right now)

>i don't think any type of privatization is the answer though

and i dont think this should be privatized. i think funding education is one of the responsibilities of government
right now its fucked because its left up to the states
most of which dont really give a shit for poorer people

nb: this was my first thought too

applied to at the VERY LEAST education and health care.

Those should not at their core be for profit, profit driven, or capitalistically allocated mechanisms.

redlining of districts and basing school funds on income is SO absurd. A system like should only exist in the inverse, where there is a robin hood effect giving schools resources that DON'T otherwise have it.

But rich neighborhoods PAY more than poor neighborhoods
They have some sort of "penalty" system whereby the hoods with milliondollar homes have the excess of their taxes diverted to the poorer communities

it's actually school DISTRICTS here

But of course, wealthy hoods can still (and do) give private DIRECT donations to schools of their choice which happen to be schools in their hood
they can't pay for teacher's salary or anything
but they CAN "donate" a indoor swimming pool to the school to help foster the next Phelps type gold medalist

put new turf on the football field so their team won't get rug burns
oil companies do this A LOT
donate all the uniforms, cleats, balls and other gear to high school teams all across texas

chicken vs egg thing. I feel this is much more an economic and class issue, which could be fixed by other means. Racism at its root would find a way to make Blacks omitted from the revised system, but my heart and head are definitely in this space as well. It's criminal the way it is administered these days.

First thought is top notch education but I think there needs to be a holistic approach to make sure once they leave the school each day the kids are getting the support they need.

naw.

we don't need one. putting our 'faith' in a figure head just sets us up - they either kill her/him or destroy her/his credibility via scandal and then the movement loses steam and we go into tailspin for however long.

that's not the way.

i'm glad BLM has resisted having any one person anointed as the 'leader' or the face of the thing. hell, BLM is barely an organization. i hope it stays that way. the more organized it becomes the easier it'll be for them to infiltrate and compromise it.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

We can get a lot done if we are unified and collectively leverage the might of our economic power. If we banded together and built the infrastructure that other minorities have then we'd get a lot further than we are now. Unification and focus go hand in hand as we leverage our resources.

Money is useless, IMHO, without the unification to fully leverage that power. We have money already admittedly not as much as other races but our collective economic power is huge.
Education is great but we are literally the most educated race in America. Black women are well educated further than their respective ethnic peers.

It's one of the few (only??) African indigenous languages serving as a lingua franca across such a large number of countries. I think something like 6-7

The next widely spoken might be what... perhaps Wolof? Or Fulani? Lingala? Fang? Can't Google at the moment.

Anyway, me personally I think there's significant value in Swahili's pervasiveness. The polyglot marketplace has been dominated by euro/colonizer languages for long enough.

There is so much opportunity in unlocking the knowledge, history, values and cultural perspectives in these languages.. so the ability to learn "one" and yet be conversational across a whole region is pretty dope. Yes, English, French, Arabic or what have you is spoken on the continent but being decent in an indigenous dialect offers way richer experiences.

I'd be happier with a more diverse sampling in popular products like Rosetta Stone, but, starting with one of the more ubiquitous languages is a fair start.

edit: can't speak on the Black American perspective per se, just sharing what kickstarted my own interest in Swahili. I decided long ago that it would be my choice should I put time towards learning another African language besides Igbo

Me? Meaning I can/could do it now?

Not what I wish or want to see others do?

Me: therapeutic/healing support that meets the spiritual, psychological, needs of Blacks and the people of the African diaspora. Really interested in holding space for women to mend deep and generational wounds...but also interested in supporting women as they practice self care in creative ways and make space to nurture their spiritual lives in a way that embraces the wisdom of our roots. Frankly, I'm also interested in that stuff for the entire Black family.

Am I currently meeting the need? No.
Am I trying? Yes.

In response to Reply # 0

We need a different curriculum that teaches
our children how to establish and maintain
their identity within a white supremacist
system. We also need to be taught how to
work in the interest of Black empowerment
rather than how to assist white domination
of our own people (which is what the vast
majority of us do when we enter the work
force).

because it is, to me, one of the most basic human needs that isn't met in many lower class black communities. Having access (location and money wise) to healthier fresh foods can help alleviate other issues in the black community. mainly education, health, and crime. It won't make things 100% better but it seems to me one of the things everyone can agree everyone needs, access to food and the ability to pay for it.

For every individual who spends time in jail....at least 10 people in their family and extended family is negatively effected in a variety of ways.....emotional, financial, day to day life management (ie primary caregiving for your grandkids) etc. There is no clearer inequality than prison and criminality statistics based on race. And it's something that is tangible, that can be addressed by actual policy. The drug war and minimum mandatory sentencing for starters.

No reason nail shops and hair care should be
dominated by others, for example.

Be more conscious of where we choose to spend and
with whom. Additionally, training ourselves to focus
more on creation/ownership than consumption

44. "whatever helps curtail and inverse anti-Blackness."
In response to Reply # 0

I don't even know what that is. I'm looking at this like a genie wish, and honestly I don't think I could spend it on some of the things mentioned because that's not the root.

Anti-Blackness is global, and we have had empires, successful economies, educated populations, traditional households, but anti-Blackness was still set to dismantle it all.

Honestly, relinquish capitalism as it currently functions to dismantle Western Imperialism. Racism is the marketing for it's capitalistic justification. I think you help many Blacks (USA and elsewhere) if you dismantle the apparatus built on oppressing Black and Brown bodies and justifications for pursuit of profit.

“Why are so many people afraid of black people?” Spradlin asks King.

“That’s what I want to figure out, because I’m not a bad black person,” King responds.

“I can give you a really good, a really good idea why it might be that way,” the officer says. “Violent tendencies ... And I want you to think about that.”
