They show'd dude lingering and watching as they walked away.

That was definitely on purpose. But I think it's a red herring.

We need to see the girls backstory to know who to consider. There is a reason she got into that cab.

I was like come on the most obvious one is the other beady eyed friend that saw them walk in. The neighbor was watching out his window, how could he have done it?

Then she was like yeah but only after she was killed.

And I was like damn, true.

But I think most likely they haven't even shown the actual killer yet.

In response to Reply # 9

Copied this from my response to the PTP. Doesn't include Bodie's homie, who was the obvious sore thumb.

- The guy driving the hearse that they saw at the gas station

- Someone on the b-ball team. Naz fucks ol' girl and calls later the guys at the party and invites them over. He lets them in, and passes out in front of the fridge. Not likely, because he only seemed cool with the one guy who invited him to the party, but possible.

- Complete shot in the dark: The guy on the motorcycle that Naz sees just before he gets pulled over. Just because we never see his face and he's near the scene.

- Someone else in her life. I think this is the most likely. She invites someone else over or someone else comes over un-annoucned. She lets them in, they drink/party with them, Naz passes out in front of the fridge, and whoever it is kills her. Could be they're going to go with that she's a high class escort or sugar baby (why she's in such a nice place at the age of 22), but that seems pretty cliche.

Worse thing about the pilot is almost every single black character antagonized the shit outta Naz for seemingly no reason.
*The basketball player he was tutoring
*Bodie and friend with the ugly racism
*The female cop who pulled him over for erratic driving (she in particular was a straight up caricature)
*The cop who took his clothes when he was stripping

Shit was exasperating. Like I get that not every black character is going to be unicorn and rainbows, but it's poor writing to make them so unevenly dreadful.

Highlights were John Tuturro, the guy who played Naz, the very New York feel of the show.

Overall, worth setting the dvr for. I can't wait to see how everything unfolds.

And of course being a dick is nothing new to a cop, but she was over the top for a simple illegal left turn.

The ballplayers as a whole didn't invite him out, it was *one* who was who throwing the party and one could assume it was partially cause the one he was tutoring was treating him so poorly.

I disagree as well about the immigrant thing too. Why would people in a large city, particularly NY, single out immigrants? The treatment would have made more sense in fly over country but NY is filled to the brim with immigrants. I get the poor treatment after they confirm he's a suspect in a murder, but prior to that it was too heavy handed.

like, you're mad no one was nice to him and you think the black characters thus far have been patently terrible?

first of all, once you're a murder suspect, the foot soldiers aren't gonna be nice to you. the detectives will fake nice to get the story out of you, but the regular cops all think you're a piece of shit.

secondly, the basketball player was kind to invite him to the party even if the other guy didn't understand why he was inviting Naz.

also, that female officer treated him pretty well (have you ever had actual interactions with police or been arrested) telling him about his right not to take the breath exam, etc. she gave him the respectful patdown and didn't freak when she found the knife like "oh shit we got the murderer right here y'all!" the cop that took him into the station was black and wasn't mean to him. he asked him what he did and Naz said "nothing" as most cops would wonder why he has take you down to the station on orders.

you doth protest a bit much, no?

As mentioned, I thought the black characters were written very unevenly. How delightful is it to watch a show in which the sole speaking black female is so stereotypically over the top, with all the attitude and bitchiness she can muster? How wonderful is it to see the only overt racism in the show come from two black kids?

My issue more than anything else, is the black characters in this series thus far are written unevenly. And it's not just this series, in many series we face this problem. I'm not asking for every black character to be jesus of nazareth, but even for the minor non-lead characters there needs to be more nuisance. I want more fleshed out characters of color. That's it. As I mentioned, I'm still going to be watching so it didn't bother me enough to not watch it. I get that this was only the first episode, so hopefully it'll balance out as the series continues.

I didn't see anything heavy about her interaction. That was typical NYPD behavior.

again. it's a gritty dark crime drama. I don't think anyone is supposed to be viewed in a positive light besides Naz and Turturro and even he was a little snippy with Naz.

first off, it's a female black cop and most cops in NYC aren't of the nice variety. I seen 2 black female officers give a bicycle rider a ticket and talked major shit for riding down a one way street the wrong direction. That's typical NYC

The guy throwing the party invited him. Whether it was guilt or not who the hell else should invite you to a party besides the person throwing it?

As car as 2 black guys giving an immigrant shit for being muslim. Ummm... yeah, that happens. Not trying to snark but most black people in NYC aren't playery. The average black new yorker isn't a fan of immigrants like you claim.

near the end of her shift. I've seen MTA workers yell at people for nothing and then their shift ends 5 minutes later (when a new bus driver takes over) and it all makes sense: she's tired and annoyed that she has to engage him right when she's about to go home.

I don't like it, but I get it.

Islamophobia from Black dudes in the Hood. Well, more specifically Arab-phobia (I know he's Pakistani, but it's presented as Bodie and his bol just guessing that Nas is Arab). Maybe it's the Philly in me, but in my experience, Black people aren't generally on that, or afraid of people from that part of the world like YT can be.

I have this weird feeling that the knife they found on Naz isn't the actual murder weapon. When he runs back into the house to get his keys (and grab the knife) it is in the exact same spot they left it the previous night. Yeah it has her blood on it, but that doesn't necessarily mean its the murder weapon.

but that was the knife they were playing stabby hand with.

the cops keep saying "potentially" in front of the word "serrated" but they seem to be focused on a serrated knife.

seems like it'd be odd if whoever killed her grabbed the stabby hand knife, killed her, then put it back downstairs.

Yeah he cut her hand with that knife, but if that was all it was used for that night - it wouldn't have blood running that far up the blade. It would only be on the tip.

on the one hand, everything seemed way to convenient. They played the game, he stabbed her, they have sex, she's only the second girl he's had sex with, his whole captivation with her, etc etc...it was all kinda unbelievable.

but on the other hand, hooks up aren't odd. i do want to know who the killer is. if it ends up being Nas, it would be a disappointing answer.

i just think so many bad choices were made...and i honestly don't get why he didn't just call the cops on some holy shit, i just woke up and found her dead. but then who'd believe him?

hmmm don't know what i'd do.

Looking at all the silly shit I did when the opposite sex was involved to impress em on my way to hopefully get some ass it doesn't seem that odd.

Only thing that tripped me out was how he let the accidental stabbing but even then you can explain it with by that time he was already drinking, coked and molly'ed up and presumably a lightweight since it was his first time for all 3.

And when he wakes up after the murder he's also dealing with the fact he's gotta get the car back to his parents (again, being young that would also be a factor even tho it doesn't mean squat in reality)

that's the thing: assuming he's not the killer then it's only shitty that he'd just try to get away in the sense that you're not helping find the person who killed this girl you liked, albeit who you just met.

BUT, even with all the fuckups, had he just not gotten pulled over he probably "gets away with it" (i say that meaning whether he did or DID NOT do it) because it seems like he's kept his nose clean his whole life so w/out being in the system he'd never be discovered even with the forensic evidence he left behind. can't match DNA, fingerprints, etc. when you're not in the system.

if he had taken his keys and bounced without touching everything BUT then remember, he got the ticket at the fire hydrant AND the last three people to see her alive was the man with the hearse at the gas station (which was on tape) and the two guys (and one became a witness). Plus the neighbor seeing him run out of her house and get in the cab...they could have easily put one and two together...and him running would still look terrible.

so really to me, the only thing he could have done to look good was to call the police but again, who'd believe him?

and this is why i say the story is set up because so many things happened that were too convenient and no matter what, he would be on the hook for this.

first of all that gas station seemed to be nowhere near the murder so and SHE didn't buy anything so the only way to know she was there with him is to HOPE the hearse driver saw her face on the news (if they'd even put that story on the news in NYC) and then remember seeing her at the gas station in a cab then try to describe Naz to the cops or give the cab number which he probably didn't bother to take note of or remember. even Bodie and his boy would just be able to describe him at best but they didn't know they drove a cab and parked it on the block. same for the neighbor, he already said he couldn't nail down the guy except to say he wasn't white and that he drove off in a cab (isn't there like 100,000 cabs in NYC and 95% aren't driven by white people?).

like i said, even WITH leaving forensic evidence as long as Naz doesn't find a way to get his DNA and fingerprints into the system, he probably skates without the traffic stop.

So here is the thing...they made sure to show the hearse driver walk over to her, look her dead in her face, and make that comment. He spoke to her more than once. Now all he really has to do is say "I saw her at this gas station." and even if he doesnt' remember what she looks like, it was all on video. There is a reason they showed that scene specifically.

You are right but Bodie knew him when he saw him, and that's what's more important. as far as the neighbor, had he gotten away eventually they would have realized that he meant he drove off in a cab and he would say "oh he was parked here" in front of the hydrant. Smart cops would look for a ticket and see a cab got ticketed and who owned it. this would lead them back to the dad and the other guys who own the cab.

I don't believe he didn't leave any evidence but as you said if he's not in the system, they couldn't pinpoint him. however, if this lead back to the dad, they could ask him to give a sample and the sample would come back as a relative match.

i just feel all of it would have led back to him eventually. the story set it up that way. i watch crime stories all the time, they would have gotten this together eventually.

but again, how would the cops know to talk to this hearse driver? like i said, he'd have to hear of her murder, put two and two together and contact the cops.

what i'm saying is they didn't KNOW that was his cab or theres no indication of that. so of course when bodie sees him again he ID's him but if they didn't know that was his cab (which it appears bodie didn't or he'd have mentioned it since he mentioned EVERYTHING except the presence of his homie) then Bodie couldn't finger him.

disagree. ONLY two things that can stop a murder investigation. lack of evidence or lack of a perp. gotta have both to make a murderer. i don't think there's a perp w/out that traffic stop based on what they've shown us.

The killer most likely does not get any camera time in ep.1 at all. The most likely scenario is that the way too swanky brownstone for an early twenties coked out white girl certainly belongs to someone else.

And that middle aged sugar daddy someone came home to find his estranged sometimes-lover, suicidal, jumpoff bucky naked in bed....He lost his shit... and killed her.

All the while Naz is downstairs in the kitchen after he tried to get some water to hydrate but passed the fuckout at the kitchen table.

Killer never even enters the kitchen to know there's a sloppy drunk/high Pakistani kid to worry about..

Not much plot development in this one, mostly just Naz going through the system and getting sent to Rikers.

Loving Tuturro and the tense, bleak, and gritty feel the show has. It really gives you that hopeless, fucked feeling in the pit of your stomach that Naz must be feeling. The shitty lawyer with gross feet is somehow the only uplifting part of the story.

I'm really enjoying Detective Box's artful police work in this too. As Naz said dude is a subtle beast. Loved that line.

Some great lines in this episode too. Digging the writing. Especialyl the "jew time do a jew crime" from the judge lol.

Also, I'm trying to figure out if Naz accepting the inhaler was a bad move for him or for Box. It could be for Naz because it shows that its is in fact his inhaler. But I also could see it being not a smart move by Box because he removed exculpatory evidence from the scene. Evidence that shows Naz was invited into the bed.

Dude was about to be sent up on a bus to Riker's Island with a Harvard T Shirt on. Box knew what he was doing. Wanted to make life in jail as shitty for Naz as possible to get him to confess

But now that his cell buddies waiting for arraignment all know the deal, they have to be looking at dude a little differently.

Must have been a different inhaler.

Also don't think there is anything exculpatory about the inhaler.

but to me, it shows the sex was consensual and that he didn't force himself into bed with her.

It doesn't prove his innocent or guilt. It only proves that he was at the scene of the crime.

A prosecutor could argue he dropped it while attacking/raping the girl or he dropped it while in a hurry to flee the crime scene.

the inhaler being there shows that he couldn't, in the midst of raping and killing her, stop and take a puff off the thing

also, what killer or rapist would use his inhaler and then forget to put it back in his pocket, especially since he remembered to put the knife in his pocket?

b/c almost every inhaler I see has the person's name on it. On the bottle with the medication in it because that's required by law. if you take apart the inhaler, they would have seen the name and if the label was removed, they would see the serial number which would tell them whose it was. they didn't need him to take it to prove it was his.

So you're right - they wouldn't need him to take it to prove its his.

With that in mind, I think it was a gamble more than anything. He wanted to do something "nice" for Nasir, as to prime him for a confession but then he wised up and remember not to talk to him.

If Nasir had let the Detective keep talking to him, he could have eventually agreed to something that was more or less a confession. You could tell at the beginning that the detective was trying to paint the scene for Nasir, saying "oh I know you didn't mean to do it, it was the drugs and things got out of control". If he continued with that maybe he could have convinced Nasir to say "yea that's probably what happened" because Nasir doesn't even know himself.

Very sharp writing this episode, particularly the scenes between Naz and Box/Stone. (I will be stealing that talented oppressor line) Some of the scenes felt a bit on the nose. Box is of course the opera listening sensitive analytic; Naz (slyly dressed in a Harvard shirt by Box) is picked up by a transport van loudly bumping rap music. Loved the woman playing the DA. Can't wait to see the Rikers scenes next week.

(and another bit of overt racism from a black character, this time stemming from Stone's client...lovely. Second episode in a row. I know though, all the blacks in NY are racist, I don't need the lecture)

Also, can we speculate on what he wants from Nas in return for the protection?

My hunch is he's going to ask Nas's parents to smuggle in drugs for him during visits. I'm thinking its that because they sort of set it up with the guard Omar is fucking telling him she can't bring the stuff in anymore.

Wild Speculation Alert: Maybe Nas's mom comes in for a visit with a Hijab. I'm leaning that way because of the way the director focused in and showed his moms getting searched looking hella uncomfortable with the whole process. Nas's family also needs money badly right now with the cab out of commission.

I'm not sure what to make of the high profile lawyer.. My lawyer friend said that flat fees are super unethical in their world - so that makes me question Stone and his motivations for sure.
I can see the Cab driver dudes putting in that call for the grand theft charge against Nas and Stone representing them.

One last thing: This fuckin eczema shit better have a payoff, man. They're focusing way too much on it! I mean, yeah okay character development and making him unique - i get it. But it seems a bit much. They better find Stone's eczema skin at the crime scene or some shit lol

This is a good thought...i honestly couldn't figure what it would be but makes sense given the situation with the guard.

Yeah I'm on the fence too but I don't blame them for picking her over him. Our view of things as the audience is skewed by the fact that it's John T. and he's the co-star of the show

I'm good on that shit. This whole episode was dedicated to them damn feet...it's like they show more of it over the course of the show. In 2 weeks they'll have a whole episode of just the feet.

soo random thoughts:

Is it just me or is Nas starting to look a little prison bufff?! Loved his stare down at the guy who burned him with the baby oil and water. The look on his face when Nas is walking up the stairs:
https://gfycat.com/SeveralImaginaryApatosaur

Thought it was kinda dumb how she wrote off Stone as a plea deal attorney. When in fact, she was out to get Nas to sign a plea deal as well lol

Best line of the episode: Pampers not Grampers.

Interesting how Freddy (Omar) was trying to give Nas a copy of The Call of the Wild. For those who haven't "already read it," its about a dog put into an environment where it has to fight to survive. Final episode of this show is also titled "Call of the Wild." Which makes me think Nas is going to be found guilty.

Overall, a really good episode. Best one since the pilot imo.

New drinking game proposal: Take a shot every time Stone scratches those goddamn feet.

In her defense; to get such a gruesome high profile murder down to manslaughter was a big move and if you're guilty you should be thankful. But yeah, she played em.

Also, LOLZ @ stone getting the perfunctory prostitute pussy.

It's also going to be interesting to see how Freddy takes care of him/if there's going to be any retaliation to the squinter.

How would someone even get a pic like that? They'd have to either get it from evidence collection or he did it himself and then snapped that pic. Definitely leaning towards the latter

I'm mainly curious to see what price/compromises Naz is forced to make while under Freddy's wing. I have to think that's going to be the main source of drama in Naz' life since Freddy's protection is so wide in range.

what i thought was interesting was that when Naz comes back from getting bandaged up, he stares dude in the eyes and the dude smiles like "okay, you giving me that stare like i told you about" and it seemed like he respected him.

WHICH makes me wonder if that was a ruse to get Naz to go to Freddy to ask for help (cuz we don't know what Freddy really wants from Naz).

the smile fading isn't anything major that they would need to explain.

Since Nas was headed to court and got the Green jumper
and dude was like "Nah dont put it on."

Nas told him about Freddy and dude told Nas
dont eff with him.

Even Sticky knew who Freddy was and told Nas straight
up that he needed to take the deal.

If that dude was really sent by Freddy to sway Nas
he's doin everything in his power to eff it up

the guard AND sticky told Nas to stick with Freddy and he still didnt trust their word.

Tea oil nigga befriends Nas, tells him Freddy aint to be trusted, gives him bad advice AND attacks him...

and now he is asking for Freddys help.

Dude gave him all the wrong advice and showed him how easy it is to get caught out there without protection cause Nas is still too nice.

shut up already, damn

The drugs at the scene don't prove that she gave him a roophie(for agrument's sake) he needs all the evidence that he can that confirms his version of events.

For starters it's already pretty clear to everyone that he and the girl were drugged up. Whether he just "can't remember" or was "blacked out due to drugs," there's a gap in his story when the chick was killed. Neither is preferable. A jury wouldn't look more favorably on a defendant in a largely circumstantial case because the kid confirmed he blacked out on coke and pills. If anything I'd think that would make him look like MORE of a scumbag to a jury.

In response to Reply # 190

but it backs up part of his story. As of right now, there is no evidence that even proves that he blacked out. If the prosecution wants to say he got drunk and high, raped homegirl and then left, having ruhypnol in his system gives some credence to his defense that she provided the pills and that he blacked out.

Just like the police collect every little thing that could possibly be used against the suspect, maybe the use it maybe they don't...i'd want every piece of evidence that backs up my story to be accounted for to in case it contradicts a possible prosecution theory/argument.

Maybe the prosecution is gonna argue that he drugged the girl and forced her to drink while he remained sober? Isn't it possible there'd be different degrees of murder if he did it sober vs. in a drug-induced rage?

So you think Naz is willingly being deceitful or he honestly don't know what he did because he was drugged up?

in the very beginning of the series in episode 1. He gave a sinister lil grin after Naz confronted them about the crazy comment Boddie made. This was right before Naz and the chick walked up the stairs.

That grin or smirk made me think he was familiar with her. Then, recall the cat was let out of that basement door. Dude broke into the house through that door; crept upstairs, and shanked her like Little Puppet was in "American Me". All of that was done while Naz was passed out.

I have been waiting to hear that another set of prints were prevalent at the scene.
