"don't invite me to your potluck cookout aka struggle barbecue"

mofo got the nerve to invite me to the crib and ask if i'll bring something.

what's that something you may be wondering?

ribs

and i got the heads-up that my cousin got the same low-budget invite and she was asked to bring

chicken

if you're doing it like that, you're doing it wrong. not everybody was meant to host.

I mean it obviously depends on how your circle gets down.

I always provide everything every single time I host. At most I'll ask someone to grab something menial like ice or plastic cups or some sort of critical condiment like limes if I spaced something and I have a time crunch, but I never ask anyone to provide anything. That's just my personal preference. I like to host and I like to cook.

Others in my circle do it the same way for the most part though there is the occasional potluck style gathering. I don't really trip when that's the case.

I suppose I can see your stance if this person is a habitual mooch who never contributes anything of substance, otherwise it just seems like a social event where everyone contributes and I see no issue personally.

not that they were asked to bring something.

Usually you get asked to bring a side or dessert, not a main entree.

In a vacuum it just seems petty to me, but again this depends more on the nature of the person asking.

I understand if it's that one dude who never contributes and/or always shows up with that wack ass $5 pizza from the shitty $5 pizza spot and didn't even have the decency to cop a $5 pizza from the good $5 pizza spot.

...spontaneously decide to have a cookout together and everyone involved pitches in together for the meat. Other than that, if you're hosting it yourself, it is beyond tacky to ask guests to bring the most expensive items (i.e. the meat).

Guests are expected to bring something, but not main course proteins.

This is pretty standard.

i still blame hip-hop.

I've brought various meats a handful of times and never blinked.

Like, I can't count how many gatherings where multiple people each brought a different main dish.

A potluck is a potluck. Everyone brings something different and if the meal is a collaborative effort it makes absolutely no difference who brings what and who is hosting. Dude who asked for ribs could have been providing tri tip, links, and chicken for all we know.

If dude was doing potato salad and asked people to provide everyone else, yeah, I can understand the problem to a degree....but only a degree. It's definitely not petty if dude who sent the invite is a habitual mooch.

I guarantee one thing though: if I asked people in my circle to bring ribs, chicken, and tri tip, absent a financial issue every one of them would show up with exactly what I asked without any issue whatsoever.

I tend to doubt that's because he was so focused on the tritip or brisket he couldn't be bothered.

Among other issues of decorum, at very least the ribs should already be started cooking when guests start to arrive.

i still blame hip-hop.

I agree with you on that. I would be insulted unless I was asked to co-host a cookout.

I don't mind contributing a lil money, drink, side dish or even meat to a lesser extent, but only if it adds to whatever meat, side dish, dessert, plates, etc. is already at the cookout.

That said I typically provide turkey burgers and franks. I never ask people to bring meat items. I have quite a few vegetarian friends though so I always have a smaller grill for the veggies (which I provide also). But just showing up is some American shit. In other cultures you ALWAYS bring something to add on. You should always want to add on to the cipher to make things better.

meats, and pretty much most of everything else. may ask folks to bring some stuff here and there like extra chips, beer whatever.

one time we did one where we wanted everyone to come and hang out and we provided everything else besides ALL the meat, and we asked folks to bring whatever they wanted to cook on the grill. we still had some meat stuff, but we had EVERYTHING else from cups, plates, chips, sides, buns, cheese, condiments, beers, liquor, mixers, ice etc.

we only did that once though, but i don't think anyone was particularly offended. we probably ended up spending more that way, honestly Haha.
