first of all, welcome.
great lil city with a ton of pride and lots to do, depending on what you like to do, and what you're used to doing.
as far as cool spots, i love going to beyu cafe on main st, not far from where your lady lives. up from beyu is dames chicken n waffles.
i'm not an "in the building scene guy" so i don't really know a lot of spots where you can see hip hop show specifically, but pinhook and motorco are places worth checking out.
i prefer to ride my bike and explore the city. the farmer's market is a good scene on saturday mornings. the american tobacco campus has a lot going on as far as restaurant and bars and a dope lawn to chill on.
the durham bulls stadium is a very nice spot to catch a game. the tickets are cheap, but if you want to watch the game for free, the Tobacco Road House sports bar/restaurant over looks the field and they have a nice patio for watching the game.
If you like nature you have the eno river and falls lake which are just right outside of the city. they have many trails and absolutely beautiful landscapes.
if you are here this weekend, you should look into going to the bimbe african culture fest. https://durhamnc.gov/999/Bimbe-Cultural-Arts-Festival
overall, i love durham! i've been here for 8 years although we're moving to cali in a month. i love the feel of it although it is changing rapidly. when we moved here, downtown was desolate. the transformation we've seen was fast and exceeded our imagination. being that durham is hot now, the prices are rising, and the downtown condos and houses are being bought by many non-durham natives. to say that black folks are leaving durham isn't true, but you see less of us in certain places. bull mccabe's is a chill spot on W. Chapel Hill St., but on the lawn you'll see almost an all white crowd, while beyu cafe is usually predominately black. i'm such a loner that this has no effect on how i see my city or how comfortable i am in these environments. durhm is pretty chill. the crime is bad, but it's the same thing you'll have in any area where they is a high concentration of poverty and drugs. typically those areas aren't close to downtown anymore.
inbox me if you need any other details. i really hate to move from this city that i've grown to love, but it's time. i hope you find things about durham that you love as well.
