"Lauryn responds to lateness criticism (OK Swipe)"

If she feels the need to be 2 - 3 hours late on a regular basis, she should set the start time back on her shows by 2 - 3 hours. Of course she won't do that, though, because advertised 12 and 1 AM start times would lead to way fewer ticket sales.

Plus, I see she was on time for her Black Girls Rock performance.

Anyway,

http://www.okayplayer.com/news/ms-lauryn-hill-pens-open-letter-in-response-to-criticism.html

I don't show up late to shows because I don't care. And I have nothing but Love and respect for my fans. The challenge is aligning my energy with the time, taking something that isn't easily classified or contained, and trying to make it available for others. I don't have an on/off switch. I am at my best when I am open, rested, sensitive and liberated to express myself as truthfully as possible. For every performance that I've arrived to late, there have been countless others where I've performed in excess of two hours, beyond what I am contracted to do, pouring everything out on the stage.

Because I care so deeply about the artistic process, I scrutinize, have perfectionist tendencies, and want space made for spontaneity, which is not an easy process, with the many moving parts on the road. Some days we are more successful than others re time. However, the vitality that is infused into the performances is always appreciated by the audiences, who may not know exactly what it took to accomplish. What hasn't been touched upon by the media, I'm sure, are the hundreds of people who rushed the stage and stayed in excess of an hour after the show ended last night, just to connect.

Our challenge is to figure out the best way to accommodate the vitality, spontaneity, and spirit that make the performances worthwhile and special to begin with, while also making that experience available and accessible to others. If I didn't Love and respect the art, I wouldn't be doing this. The audience and I should have that in common.

My true audience knows emphatically that I care. It isn't possible to affect people in any deep and meaningful way without putting sacrificial time in.

I have nothing but Love and appreciation for the fans in Atlanta, and regret not being able to give you a full show. We are figuring out a plan to make it up to you, and will announce details as soon as we have them.

Respectfully,
MLH

They don't want to hear about your energy and chakras. Just sing That Thing.

Why folks are still shelling out 80 bucks for Lauren Hill tickets in 2016 is beyond me though lol. Don't they have Yelp for concerts? They should

...the folks who are still buying her tickets, probably for the most part, are that crowd that wants to hear about aligning energies and chakras..

shit is sad overall....

I think quest hit the nail on the head...there's some self sabotage and age fear in the mix somewhere...

I knew a girl back in college who could rhyme her ass off but her sense of time management was rude as shit. We would tell her the what time the bus was leaving for a show and the next day she was no where to be found. 45 minutes later we finally found her picking dandelions from a random yard in the hood. Her response when we asked WTF..."oh, there is a show today?"

She actually met Lauryn and was backstage in her dressing room before a show. Lauryn's couldn't find her purse and everyone looked at my friend like she stole it. LOL..

last time I saw her in Philly I took her to South St and she was looking up at the buildings talking about how beautiful a number was on a billboard. Not the font style, just the number.

truly gifted.. and truly out of her damn mind when it came to everyday life.

one time we stopped at a gas station in WV at 3AM and someone in the gas station accused her of stealing cigarettes. We had to pay a fine or risk going to jail.

For years we thought it was some racist bullshit but my boy and I talked a wile back and replayed some of her weirdness and wondered if she may have actually stole them.

She wasn't an artist tho. Got to this jawn's house, we're talking outside and she starts going on about how beautiful the crickets sounds and can I just feel the energy of nature!

I should've Grandpa Simpson'd that situation right there.

not with her unprofessionalism
but having to deal with everything she's suffered through, in the public eye nonetheless
at this point people are buying tickets either to support her just because or they're buying tickets to have a reason to talk shit. the latter is lame

Bottom line is she's a pro, and her fan base has shit to do these days, as Quest more or less argued.

it's evident she suffered some sort of breakdown some time ago
now she has to get back out here to make money despite apparently not being fully healed
it's sad and not something I can laugh at or really scorn her about
I'd just advise people against purchasing tickets unless they're looking for something to complain about

because of where she and her work figured to that time in our lives.

While we look at lets say Wyclef for being emotionally abuse through their relationship, it doesn't absolve her for apparently giving none of her bandmembers credit on an album, nahmean? Just because you're going through stuff doesn't give you passes for doing shitty things.

It's just an interesting contrast how we put lots of value in the rumors of her struggling through alot of things, things that many of us struggle with and still maintain. But we kind of ignore the many rumors of her just being a general asshole, lol. Remember, she was infamously late for shows even before this current Sony forced iteration.

Putting this in contrast with the loss of someone like Prince who had his own demons, demons that looks like actually killed him, but still managed to 'show up' until the very end

... I'm not here so much for the lateness excuses either and that 'apology' was god-awful but is her breakdown really just conjecture at this point? Her loony behavior has been pretty well-documented so I think atruhead has a really good point -- she ain't ready so this is the result. It's exactly why I refuse to go to her shows. I wish her well, but I won't fall for the banana in the tailpipe.

the pressure to follow up an Album Of The Year Grammy and then getting sued by collaborators
not to mention Hip Hop is drastically different than what it was in her prime

I dont know that she could make new impactful music if she wanted to as she's more of a vocalist/emcee that would have to pay musicians their worth, but that doesnt excuse her regular tardiness

not buying a ticket to her concert? ok fine
buying a ticket (knowing she has a rep for being late), and then making publicly disparaging comments about her afterwards? I don't think that's ok
not buying tix to her concerts and trashing her online when you heard she was late again? i don't find that ok either

point being, she's human. whatever her issues her, they are. how does publicly ridiculing her help that?

let the market speak. anyone who doesn't like it, just don't support. done.

i love her to death and personally would not buy a ticket to her show. Am i giving her a pass? yes and no

Why is this not OK? Buying a ticket shouldn't be a buyer beware contract, lol. We're a bit more music industry saavy by the nature of the forum then many and it's not as if Lauryn Hill being late gets reported on CNN. Guaranteed a large amount of the people complaining had no clue. And the fact they are complaining + it's getting coverage is a good thing; because they can make an informed decision like me and you can make as opposed to thinking buying a Lauryn Hill ticket is like any other show.

>not buying tix to her concerts and trashing her online when

onto my previous point, yeah and no. By the nature of internet I dont doubt she got a bunch of trolls on some 'You fucking bitch...blah blah blah' who are just using it as an excuse to drag anyone down and make them feel better about themselves. At the same time, imagine you saved up money/time, babysitters to go to a Lauryn Hill concert because those tickets are not cheap, and she doesn't show up? And like I said, if this was a one off, cool. Or if it was just current era Lauryn. But we are decades into this behavior now...

but it always is. I bought a ticket to MJ in London...he died.

some bought tix to Nashville Beyonce...it was cancelled.

some had tix to Janet world tour..she got pregnant and postponed.

shit happens.

one can complain without making personal insults, no? As you can see, my rub is not with the complaining, it's with the disparaging comments.

exactly. I know better LOL

but even still, things can happen. accidents, venue issues...all consumer behavior has some "buyer beware" elements built in. I don't see how a concert is any different

but the things you listed are anomalies for those artist. Mike, Janet, Bey don't have a history for missing or being that late to shows. they valued their fans.

I don't get that feeling that lauren really respects her fans the same way. everybody pretty much knows that lauren has been consistently late for years now. I won''t buy a ticket, but those that do hope that she will do better and I think are rooting for her.

that stuff is out of our control

what is in our control is

whether or not we buy a ticket and

whether or not we choose to wait for her to get onstage and

whether or not we write mean and nasty personal shit about her that is beyond just (legitimately) complaining that she was late.

i'm specifically talking about those things.

The lumping her lateness into "shit happens" and using Beyoncé and mj as examples..

And it goes back to what bigreg said..maybe buyers beware mightn't have been the best term sicnr technically it is...but nobody (except lauryn hill 2016 fans) buys a concert ticket and their predominant thought leading up to the show is..."man. I wonder if she's going to show". It shouldn't be that much of a gamble.

anyone that paid money when you start talking about 'true fans' and shit like that. there's no way to justify that sort of language when you're the one that's causing the issue. you're lucky to still have anyone paying for your show at a major venue when you haven't had new product in over a decade.

be on time, do your set, and bounce. especially if you're at a venue that will not allow overage on time. if you continually screw people with your tardiness and lack of professionalism/respect, people will take snipes at you.

God forbid you only have one way of making income short of roping fans into a pyramid scheme and real life shit going on with the world demanding shit from you

Im not making excuses for her, but the onus is more on fans to not buy tickets considering her track record unless it's absolute unconditional support they're showing. it shouldnt be that way, but life is real

at the end of the Netflix Nina Simone documentary she was still performing way past being worn out, but she put on a show because she was destitute

all Im saying is these people are human despite your expectations

the Lauryn Lotto at this point.

i love that she used the 'no true scotsman' argument, tho.

only if you are pure of heart, mind and spirit can you detect the necessity of the alignment of the chakra khans which leads to the 7th level of overstanding the non-linearity of temporal constraints upon creation.

i shoulda threw a beloved in there, but i think desus got that copyrighted.

MF Doom sending DOOMposters to stand in for his show was a piece of shit move.

It was also brilliant.

It was a simultaneous...INTENTIONAL fuck you to the fans/stans...a statement about the music being the most important thing....and an outstanding nod to comic book nerds like myself.

See...Dr. Doom was good for sending bots to handle shit and just when you think you've got Doom cornered....you been fighting a robot all this time.

It was genius (to me)...and if I had gone to a Doom Show and gotten a DOOMposter...I would have cracked up laughing for most of the show.

PLUS...he even played off of that shit and sent Mos Def out in a Doom mask at a show THAT HE WAS AT AND LATER PERFORMED

That is a very calculated statement...and he has never apologized.

This thing with Lauryn is more callous and disrespectful to me...and Doom tickets ain't never been 80 bucks.

I may be alone on this one...but I'm just trying to be honest.

i was kinda alluding to that. DOOM at least owns his shit, to some extent. it may be an ex post facto excuse for flaking on shit, but there's a rationale to it and it has become part of his lore.

the lauryn lotto on the other hand... i couldn't do it.

i already knew that id take what i could get as far as a legit show, she when the masked one parted the stage crowd and simply started with playing dark instrumental bangers for a long ass time i was good, vibin and shit to his production. some in the crowd eventually lost it, yellin for him to rap and threw a beer can, at which point whoever it was bounced again into the night haha

1. You ain't the first artist who has to perform at specific times. Are the folks who manage to do perform on time somehow lesser artist? Do they have an on and off switch? Do they care less about the artistic process?

2. The fact that some people put up with her bullshit, that makes them true fans? Maybe those people who stayed and hour after the show don't have jobs in the morning.

3. Instead of being mad you werre late folks are suppose to be thanking you because you some time perform in excess of your contracted time?

In response to Reply # 0

Chastain is smack dab in old-time Buckhead money neighborhood and they've pissed off tons of artists in the past for enforcing their strict 11 PM curfew. Shows often feel rushed there with little time for an opener, setup or getting the sound right, and the area immediate to the stage is VIP "picnic" lawn, where these old white folks that pay for a "season passes" to Chastain sit, drink wine and don't give a fuck about whats going on on stage. So there is that.

But she took the check and someone should have told her there was a very hard out for that show.

I saw her last August and not only was she on time, her set was nothing but pure motherfucking energy! I was very impressed by what I saw and heard.

I don't know if I'm lucky or are the folks who have been screwed just unlucky? Is the consensus that most of her shows are late and fucked up or do we only hear about those shows?

I'm curious to hear about the positive experiences at a Lauryn show.

but my shit is this.

If you don't have the stomach for this shit...fall back.
If you had to make a compromise to get yourself out of hot water....then fulfill your compromise and FALL THE FUCK BACK

You don't leave fans standing for 2 hours then hit the stage for 30 minutes and an op-ed about your chakras.

That's bullshit.

I saw this shit coming when she showed up (on time, mind you) for her Smokin' Grooves dates with her guitar and the few chords she knew and did the Unplugged material.

Like...she was legit telling the crowd to be quiet because it was important "THAT YOU HEAR THIS!!"

Girl, bye. It may be important to YOU....but I don't give a damn how talented you are (were)...you don't get to dictate how the fuck I feel about what the fuck YOU feel like serving up.

Some folks just wanna hear Doo-Wop. Like...that's why they legit bought tickets.

You go up there singing "Woe is me/Rohan fucked me over part 7"....Sherquetta and them ain't here for that shit. So they gonna act accordingly.

Now...I'm all for that you're an artist and you get to do what the fuck you wanna do type shit.

But not at the expense of the dwindling people who still fucking with you right now.

I can't with her.
I won't with her.

I wish her peace and solace and all the love in the world...but not one IOTA of my finances.

Real talk

she's that NFL player who had a few great years, blew out his knee, and still wants to play. oh wait, the difference is that that player, who can't play anymore, can still show up on time though.

some what. ..and only when her "energy is aligned with the time..."

if she was able to still play she would be making new music on the same level. Something is off in the head or she just doesn't have enough to do it on her own (most artists refuse to believe this, she needs to stop with the want to take all the credit of being great), or she burned bridges of the people she needed around her to create and be polished. I think its the all of the above.

In response to Reply # 71

it's rare for an artist to make great music their whole career. usually lightening strikes once, maybe twice and then you eat off of it for your career while trying to recapture that HIT.

my point tho, if she showed up and played the hits 99% of her fans would be satisfied. She can't even do that which is disrespeckful

D'angelo, Maxwell and Sade still make brilliant music

She just hasnt been able to.

Her playing her old music isnt the point, so clearly you missed the point. The fact that thats all she can do is the point....unless you have some new classic Lauryn Hill albums that nobody else heard my point is proven. It was a reply to the notion that she still has it. I dont see how that or my response wasnt clear.

This has nothing to do with the shit u talking about...

It's basically about professionalism....Of course L Boogie has gone through some serious, traumatic things in terms of her lawsuit, prison, and how she felt destroyed by the music industry...

But Lauryn is not the first music act to have a sob story....

It really comes down to having respect for the remaining folks who still ride with her....But I'm sure it will hit her once she finds herself playing at the local YMCA....

No...it's just that the bullshit u r typing is a reach....I mean, I saw what u tried to do...I get it...that ol' U BLACK PEOPLE ARE HYPOCRITES AND Y'ALL WOULD HAVE GONE OFF AT WHITEY IF THEY CAME AT HER LIKE THAT thing with a bit of that BOUGIE MASSES WANTING THEIR POUND OF FLESH FROM THE POOR CELEBRITY thrown in....

But it's not working in this context...Because it really comes down to plain old show business rule: Respect your audience....

U smarter than your own ass, homie...And the sooner u learn to stop talking down to people like u have the cure for cancer, the better we will all be on this board...

I for one, have never had any issues with u until lately...In fact I've said a few HELL YEAH'S to some of your past posts...U a OG in these parts...

I just take offense to your brazen simplification of things.....Black folks r just like anyone else...If u pee in their cup long enough and tell that its Kool-Aid, then they will give u the middle finger...Race has NOTHING to do with hardworking folks complaining because the artist they came to see is three hours late to a concert...

The "look how much I know about Black culture"
agenda (see: his response to Black Thought at Harvard in the Lesson)

The "yall shouldn't care about celebrities" agenda
(see: his response to the girl dying in the school fight)

There's also the white supremacist agenda that he, himself,
doesn't even see (see: his defense of excluding Black actors
from major movies) Hell look at this very post with the
"What if white people did this/that" bs. He's good at
pretending he's asking you to be open-minded but really
asking you to accept white supremacy. All very amusing
when you realize what he's doing.

He has more, but these are the main, painfully-obvious ones.

artistic move or statement. She's not doing this for any greater purpose or point or meaning. It's just go old fashioned bad manners and inconsiderate behavior (adults often structure their day around going to shows, including securing childcare, arranging transportation to and from the venue, deciding what they're going to eat for dinner that day, etc. All of that involves planning and money, typically.)

We know what u meant....And it was bullshit...Not to mention very smug and presumptuous....

I mean, some things come down to respect....Madonna was getting the same bad press for coming to shows 2 hours late just a few weeks ago....Sly Stone did as well back in the days (his reputation for no shows basically destroyed his touring revenue...)

It's the flip of people shaming poor black folks for buying Jordans and expensive sneakers. Only your critique is that people who spend $80 to see LH deserve whatever treatment LH decides to dish out because they had the audacity to spend $80 to see her. The problem is, in 2016 it's almost exclusively working class and regular middle class black folks (of a certain age) going to her shows - almost the same exact kinds of people as the Jordans example. So you're joining in on the shaming. Interesting.

>The difference is...if you knew when you bought the Js that

The implication here is, hey, if you buy a faulty product, don't blame the company that made the faulty product, who make the faulty product faulty for no other reason than that they know there's a particularly loyal group of fans that will continue to buy them.

Conversely, those fans are loyal because this hypothetical shoe was once incredible and they keep hoping the shoe company will just deliver a quality product without being arrogant assholes about it.

Some may liken them to.... addicts, on a very basic level, and you're getting a kick out of watching their pusher shit on them as he dangles the product in front of them.

My weirdness could actually make people laugh instead of groan

On my Rodney Dangerfield, I tell ya I don't get no respect!

I have a fake Rodney bit too...

Goes something like:

So my wife comes to me and she says she wants to try some new things in the bedroom...

I said hey honey, sounds good to me, what are we gonna try?

She says to me, she says:

I wasn't talking about with you
