strip clubs aren't anywhere near ATL or Miami.

don't get me wrong, the strip clubs aren't Los Angeles bad.

Depends what u go to the club for
ATL they trip on touching
HOU 3/4 of the clubs are full on brothels
V-live
Dreams
Onyx

Are the best three black clubs in Houston

The top ones might look better in atl/Mia but at the end of it all they just want your bread

The type of show/dance I get for $20 in Houston far outpaces what u get in Atlanta

because honestly there isn't anything to do.

Let me clarify that, there's shit to do but it all feels staged and pretentious. From the museums to the plays to the art galleries....on and on.

It's like karaoke Ice Cube "It was a Good day" vs the real thing

Constant construction. on it's face it's a good thing that Houston is keeping up it's infrastructure but it's excessive and they seem to keep working on the same bridges'roads

Houston is a big energy market (the majority of the energy funds are there) and this drop in oil prices is hitting the entire state of Texas hard and specifically Houston very hard

Add to that there isn't a natural body of water unless you drive out to Galveston, the bad traffic, and underwhelming food, and places closing at 2am.

Lastly, the flooding sucks. Let it rain hard for a half day and shit will get backed up

Pros: with all that being said, I want to move back within the next 2 years. I've met some really great friends that I now consider family in Houston.

It's an very diverse city and it's great for broadening your social circle

a shit load of bars and lounges

Relative closeness to other major cities: 3 hours from Dallas for a change of scenery. 1.5 hours from Austin (which a great live music city). 6 hours from New Orleans.

Like how critical mass went from 50 people to 500
How Saturday at St Arnold became SATURDAY at ST ARNOLD
How the famous gay bar (Sally's) and lesbian bar (never went) of westheimer got painted over
How they opened a cocktail bar right next to Boondocks and took away all of the parking
Taxi taxi gone
The Mink gone
Speakerboxx Thursdays never came back
Starbucks museum parties stopped being fun.

I ended up back there two Decembers ago and you're right, it felt soulless.

It was great. A huge place that managed to feel small and welcoming. I still haven't found a DJ party like Speakerboxx Thursdays at the Proletariat. I've never been to a brewery event like when St Arnold was really getting off the ground.

These things and others were high quality stuff that was managing not to be too trendy but also not too barren. They were always ON but not always the place to be seen.

I feel like social media and gentrification hit Houston hard. No bar or clubs last. But when rents went up, old staples went right out the wayside. And when something that's cool enough to be fun and low key can be hash tagged, it's not gonna stay low key too long.

Burb used to spin at a place regularly, The Flat I think, I used to kinda like that place. I wonder what it's like now.

nice place.

I lived in houstong from 2005-2013. Our paths probably crossed several times

on another note: I live there all those years and yet to try Breakfast club. Houston people love it.

also if you want a damn good steak go to Taste of Texas

Not to mention the warm climate and no State Income Tax.

I've only been to the city for games, and never ventured beyond the stadium and hotels.

I'm not married and am childless, but probably not forever.

Thinking long term, with a flexible work situation, where in the country I should move--beyond NYC--for maximum comfortability.

My question I guess, why shouldn't I move to Houston?

So far on the Con list from OKP-BT:
-Floods
-Sprawling & Bare
-Artificial
-Traffic
-Humid Heat
-Skrippers<

If you want to start a family with a good woman with a head on her shouldrs...
COME ON DOWN!!!!!
Houston is filled with black women that are looking to be married with kids but local dudes be on BS and transplants like myself get scooped up quick.

Houston is the prefect place to raise a family that's why me and my wife chose here (her hometown) over San Diego (my hometown)
A 300k home in Houston would be over a million in SD

keep in mind I'm not talking about Ft worth or arlington..Dallas. and to be more specific, Addison

I used to be against Dallas just because of the Cowboys but I've never had a bad time in Dallas.

The driving can suck tho. That metroplex is too big to drive from end to end. Those Dallas to Ft Worth and back drives takes away your joy. I compare it to the Irvine to Hollywood to Irvine drives.

Flooding...
I can throw a football from my bedroom window and hit The Galleria so I'm not so affected by flooding
But I have clients in The Woodlands (where I'm at now) and Katy so flooding prevents me from visiting them. No biggie. I just telecommute.

Summer heat/humidity...

By the third summer you're uses to it

Oil crises...
I don't work in oil so I haven't been affected nor seen the effects thus far with so much money still being thrown around.
I do HEAR of a lot of layoffs. Just ain't seen none.

Housing. ...
Houses are hello cheap down here

Income tax/property tax...
Since housing is cheap and there is no state income tax, they rape you on property tax at like 3.5%
Your 300k home costs an extra $800per month in prop taxes alone

Insurances...
Home insurance is dumb expensive cause were in a hurricane zone and maaaaany places in Houston are in flood zones

Food...
If u like southern shut you'll be in heaven
Also Ox Heart chef was a James beard finalist the last 3 yrs or so

Travel...
Spirit air got $29 fares to a bunch of places
I've been on a dozen of them in the last year
Went to Costa Rica for $120 on spirit
From downtown houston to Austin is a 2.5hr drive
Dallas is 3.5hrs
Nawlins 5.5hrs

If you're single...
The women are just plentiful
Not as polished as ATL/NYC but they good country girls

Houston is a big small town
It don't have that electric vibe like atl or Miami or DC soon as you step off the plane

It's hello conservative with all the wypipo being staunch red Cruz supporters

You need to own a gun or be comfortable around them

The city is flat and dreary and ugly
It all looks like south central LA in the 80s

I'll post more as I can think of it

Charlotte has my heart, even though I've only visited once.

Been to Houston twice and it seems pretty dope minus being so spread out and the bad roads.

22. "the arts and live concert music scene SUCKS "
In response to Reply # 0

We rarely get good live music acts
They will go to nawlins, Dallas skip houston, hit austin.

Alvin Ailey only comes here one wind every two years

There is no straight ahead jazz spot like blue note, yoshis or village vanguard

There are no jazz shows period

Soul music like Glasper, Bilal, etc never come here.

The museums here suck and aren't plenty full

Although I do have my daughter in a summer arts program at MFAH this summer

Houston is not a very "intelligent" city on a whole
They just some hick ass Cowboys sipping drank

Yeah. No artsy fartsy type stuff to do
And I'm always in the gayborhood (montrose) checking the scene

New orleansg has jazz covered
Austin has all that weird artsy fartsy stuff covered

Houston is still really conservative
Like they don't know what a transvestite is

But yeah I miss the arts
I REALLY REALLY miss the arts.
I've lived in
NYC
DC
Boston
San Diego
LA
And they allll had a poppin arts/museum scene

"They are among the highest-paid performers at Carnegie Hall, even though they do not play a note: they are the stagehands of Local 1, whose average total compensation of more than $400,000 a year is more than some of the hall’s top executives earn. Little happens on Carnegie’s stages without them."
