14. "Why doesn't PR want to become a state?" In response to Reply # 2
Everything I've read says that the voters there regularly vote against statehood, but that sure seems better that what's poppin' right now on the island.

My only time spent in PR has been spent primarily in and around San Juan. Ponce (southern part of island) was cool, but seemed depressed. Culebra Island is breath-taking, but probably really expensive to live there.
I have heard great things about the west coast though. Much less crowded and some really beautiful beaches. Towns like Rincon, San German, Mayaguez, and Aguadilla seem like neat towns to live in/visit.

Decent sized city, beautiful scenery, and really chill.
I was supposed to go in July, but that zika shit has me shook. My older family members who aren't really in their baby making years are still going.

11. "should they have become a state instead?" In response to Reply # 0
i don't remember all the details when they were deciding whether to become a state or stay a colony, but in skimming the huffington article, it seems as though being a state would have been better for them economically but at the same time, how's the economy in hawaii? both are tourist locations and equally expensive to live in but hawaii seems to be better off.

But statehood still wld have to pass congress, and since most assume that as a state, PR would be democratic leaning (blue state), Republicans won't vote to make it happen
So there's also talk of letting them in if another red state comes to balance it, ie Colorado wanting to split into 2, or Hawaii independence mvmt somehow forces them to drop out and PR take its place
All seem like pipedreams to me
