Atlanta is west of Detroit
It's faster to drive from Chicago to Denver than Chicago to Boston
If you travel directly north from Cancun, you hit Florida

the only one that's surprising initially is the drive time one but it makes sense when you think about the open road.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Boston is several hundred miles east of Tampa. I've noticed this during some Rays/Red Sox games at Fenway where it's still light in Florida but dark in Boston, although we're in the same time zone.

It's closer than Philly.

Also, when I was Bogota, Colombia I was in the same time zone as the East Coast of the U.S.A.

Folks not form around here get a little surprised when I tell them that I've never been to Pittsburgh, and that there's no real connection between Pitt and Philly besides sharing the same state. I usually point out how Pitt is closer to DC and Baltimore than Philly, and the city's closest to Cleveland than any other big city.

In response to Reply # 5

i'm not buying that.

i've driven to philly plenty of times. was there as recently as last month. philly takes 2 hours if you're driving the speed limit and the toll plazas are backed up and you hit traffic. 1.5 hours if everything goes well.

pittsburgh gotta be over 3 hours

I never realized the OK panhandle was all that was between TX & CO. In my mind, they're a few states apart.

In response to Reply # 24

As an east-coast dude, "the south" was always VA/NC/SC/GA/AL/FL/MS and LA. Texas always seemed so far west that I never considered it part of the south, even though every one I've met from TX considers it southern. Always thought of cowboys, ranches and the Mexican border when I thought of Texas, and that stuff == SW/W.

Edit: I could never place KY and TN, either. They both seemed very mid-western/appalacian like WV to me. I don't think of those states as "southern" either.

West Texas is South West. I'm tempted to say North Texas is somewhat Midwestern

And Austin is Austin

64. "Interstate numbering system isn't about the number of states."
In response to Reply # 61

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_Highway_System#Numbering_system

the east-west highways are assigned even numbers for the most part. the north-south highways have odd numbers.

the odd numbers would begin at 1 (though there's not one lower than 5 AFAIK) and increase as they go east. so Interstate 5 runs along the west coast and Interstate 95 on the east coast. 'major' highways are assigned numbers that are multiples of 5 (5, 15, 25, 35, 55, 65, 75, 95, et al).

the even numbers would begin at 0 (there's not one) and increase as they go north. so Interstate 10 runs through the Southwest and the Gulf Coast and Interstate 90 runs through the great white north (*waves @ Bernie bros*). 'major' highways are assigned numbers that are multiples of 10 (10, 20, 40, 70, 80, 90, et al).

the US Highway numbering system is similar - except the odd numbers increase as they go west. so US Highway 1 runs along the east coast and US Highway 101 is out west (that's odd for another reason though). and then the even numbers increase as they go south. so US Highway 2 is in the great white north and US Highway 90 is way down south.

fuck you.
