"How much should I tip?"

I'm having a sofa delivered to the first floor of a single-family home. I purchase the sofa in store, but pick up was not an option. The delivery will cost me $150. How much should I tip the delivery men?

I rented a U-Haul van to pick up a Nother piece of furniture. I would've picked this up if they let me. Since pick up was not an option, you'd think they'd waive the delivery fee. 150 feels like a lot, so that extra 20 feels gratuitous as fuck. Not the delivery guys' fault though.

They also don't have a store room to hold big pieces. You buy in store, and they ship from the distribution center.

Tipping is for people who live off tipped wage (like myself and other service industry friends) not people who are already making $12+ per hour.

Maybe they get paid different/less in larger areas where movers are more common but before my buddy graduated he LOVED being a mover and rarely if ever got tipped.

Used to know a girl that tipped gas station attendants and that bugged me out too.

30. "food delivery sure. You tip the FedEx guy too?"
In response to Reply # 23

I guarantee it does not cost the store $150 to deliver what he's buying ON TOP of the employee salary. Their hourly is in that fee. For example, if I weren't a tipped employee, a shot of Jim Beam would be $15 instead of $5 (for arguments sake, not doing any real math here). And then you wouldn't tip me for that shot, because we'd both know I was making a decent wage and you were paying a convenience fee for drinking in public, same as I'm paying when I sit on my ass and watch two other men bring a couch in my apartment.

If tips were factored into delivery people's wages I guarantee the delivery fee would be significantly reduced. But if the employer isn't considering tips then I'm not unless under extraordinary circumstances. I get the physical labor aspect but I don't hear about people tipping the people who mow their lawns or paint their houses. You agree on a price and pay it. Food and beverage services are unique in that they are designed around tipping to cut employer costs. I don't believe that furniture/appliance/postage etc delivery is.

Maybe I'm wrong.

For me, depending on the size of the sofa and how many people will be delivering it, I would probably give (assuming 2 movers) $15 each. I doubt they would complain and if they do, then I would have no problem taking that shit back. Lol

If you don't put them through something extraordinary, I don't see the point of paying them extra.

It's not like they are tipped employees who need tips to supplement their $3 an hour.
You're paying an extra 150 for delivery too? What is that for if not to compensate the movers?

Then I don't see the point.

Now if they throw in free delivery I'm tipping the two people they normally send. $20. They both get $10 a piece.

They only have a showroom but that's wild they wouldn't let you drive to the warehouse and pick up from there. I have done that before. Sounds like they wanted just a bit more money from you and hid it in a delivery charge.

I bought a couch from a place in Charlotte and they had it shipped from VA.

I didn't even think to ask if I could get it delivered to the store and pick it up from there because we were on the second floor and we moved so much I was tired of lifting shit.
