Even if one closed at midnight, they'd still be losing hours of sales that the 24 hour locations would rack up on.

I honestly couldn't tell you one in any state that I've seen them in that wasn't 24 hours.

All exist in my neighbourhood. It's quite a nice neighbourhood too, it's just in the center of a major capital city so yeah, there are a few other people around and apparently they all need amenities.

I've got a 24 hour diner within walking distance.

Never lived near anything smellier than a drain or more militaristic than the Salvation Army though. The waste treatment is about the only thing I'd think twice on, I guess. I'd probably end up standing outside a military recruitment center handing out leaflets for IT courses.

If the area is zoned appropriately for whatever exposure is going to go in there, then I think a resident has an uphill battle complaining.

If the local government is changing the zoning to generate add'l tax revenue, foist off public works onto a private entity, cave to pressures from the business sector, etc., then yeah, NIMBY.
