"How do you account for your recent 3 year prison bid on your resumé?"

Fess up to being in prison?

Leave a 3 year gap?

Or do you play it both ways (like the resumé I'm looking at) and list the skills you developed at your prison job without listing the employer or specifically mentioning you were in prison?

i still blame hip-hop.

and if asked during an interview i'd be prepared to talk about it. in fact i might bring it up during the interview - especially if i anticipated a background check that would include review of my criminal history. this assumes that the felony conviction would appear in my criminal history.

if that shit was sealed or expunged and my employer won't see it i might find something else to explain it away.

fuck you.

Either they are gonna be cool with it or not. Better for me the sooner I find out so that I don't waste my time.

He left a gap, and then explained it when asked. He didn't get many jobs that way.

Then he stopped explaining the gap. Things got easier after that.

i don't think gaps in resumes are as big a deal as some ppl believe.

especially these days when so many ppl have suffered through 'long' periods of unemployment or underemployment.

fuck you.

We all probably know someone who's been long-term un(der)employed, a couple of years gap is way more expected today than it was 30 years ago. Hell, some people just pack up and go travelling for years these days and they always seem to get back into it OK.

I'd give as little information as I had to, but if pressed specifically about prison obviously you've probably got to.

Just leaving the gap is less risky. And if asked saying one was unemployed is also less risky bc it's not lying.

fuck you.

In media people freelance some years and others they don't at all... but they put it all under a single free lanceheading on their resume. But if you're working hourly or salary for a company it probably won't work.

The Federal and/or state government encouraged an individual to take a leave of abscence on their dime for insert reason that is of diminished in stature relative to the crime committed.
