"Has R&B always been this gender polarized?"

As in, it's not cool for the straight man to proclaim his love for that new Beyonce track (I mean is there any way to clear a dance floor of men quicker than playing Beyonce?)

Wasn't really like that with Mary back in the day was it?

Even the male R&B artist like Chris Brown seem more...hip-hop centric "hard" in a way that would turn off a lot of women (and yet, there are still alot of women who "These Hoes ain't Loyal" is there jam).

Or is it artist specific?

Fellas, are their female artist today you can bump in the ride without fear of getting clowned by your boys? Or is it no R&B at all in the ride with the fellas?

closer to some "bitches and shit but hoes and tricks" than Luthor singing sweetly to them. Maybe Luthor is a bad choice.

I am a bit off point now.

>female Radio R&B has consolidated around Bey and Rhi Rhi.

Its those two and a shitload of Aaliyah clones (Kehlani, Tinashe) on the female.

I blame industry sexism though; you can be an auteur r&B dude...if you're a female you better be sexy or dancy

comfortable bumpin R&B in their ride.

I come from an area where it was not uncommon to see young cats
playin old school in their cars and no one would think twice, especially if the bass knocks. So, I have no problems playin a slow jam in the car regardless of who is in it.

for example a lot of that downtempo Soulection stuff or remixes of old Aaliyah songs will be played at parties where it's pretty mixed.

Dudes don't just 'put up with it to get bitches' like how R&B was in the past.

When's the last time you heard a male rapper deride R&B for being punk smoove shit?

I'm over 40, so I came up in the days of Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Patrice Rushen, Angela Winbush, etc. We used to love the women of Soul & R&B and there was never an issue for men to listen & enjoy it.

I remember the split starting when hip-hop started expanding (say early 90s). R&B became "Rap & Bullshit." Hip-Hop derided R&B hooks, especially with women singing on them. Then, of course, this trend blew up and hip-hop started chasing that trend.

....as well as K. Michelle's "Something About the Night" all loud in the ride yesterday with the windows down. If a joint is undeniable, I'mma listen to it despite gender. But I feel you though. R&B really is split and I believe it started in the 90s. Before that, a dude bumping R&B in his car while his boys are in the ride wasn't considered suspect. Female singers weren't considered singing strictly for the chicks either at that time.

Soft, douche-y lyrics, dudes wearing silk pajamas in they video, texturized hair, high pitched singing voices, etc.

The masculinity evaporated from R&B a long time ago.

Usher? Maxwell? Jagged Edge? Next? 112? Montell Jordan? Bobby Brown? Ginuwine? Silk? Jodeci? Boyz II Men? Guy? Blackstreet? Brian McKnight? BBD? R.Kelly?

lol

Not trying to get into a debate about what's "masculine" or not (especially on this site), but greasy dudes in baggy leather pants were pretty far from the pinnacle of masculinity where I grew up.

R&B before this current era could be vulgar/dirty, but they masked it with euphemisms and metaphors

Nowadays they'll directly tell you how they're going to fuck you and how vigorously they want you to eat the booty.
