There weren't any drains or sewers in the desert, so we're driving through flood water listening to a song about it never raining there.

The only advantage I ever saw to living in LA was that there are very good places to go and eat at all hours. Which can be an issue in the Bay Area, especially where I live out in the sticks. However, these days I can barely stay up past midnight, so that's not as much of a thing anymore.

Because that's the area that "feels" like the Bay to me. And yeah, I can tolerate Echo Park and Silver Lake. But that's not most of LA. Almost everywhere else I go feels... off.

And, you know, traffic fucking sucks everywhere.

Hell, I barely go anywhere "plastic." I can even go to parties inside of Hollywood that don't feel "Hollywood."

It's interesting...I met a Black girl from Miami last year who's the typical model type. I asked if she has ever been to Baldwin Hills or Inglewood, and she said "no, and not to sound mean, but I have no desire to ever go there." I'm like....no "desire???" She stays in the Valley and only does Valley ass things up there.

"plastic" was basically 80's/90's labeling by a provincial SF/bay area population (that hadn't seen a cultural identity crisis that it's going through right now). and it was probably true then.

Been talking about moving there for a decade. Hate New England weather with every ounce of my being. But in the end I never pulled the trigger for family. I'm acutely aware of the fact that it's a terrible excuse, but it's the reason.

But weeks like this week always re-spark the discussion.

I hear you ! I got 6 nieces/nephews who all consider me the "fun uncle" so not only would I miss them growing up but I'd feel bad leaving them with the rest of their boring uncles.

Ha but really it's just tough to think that I'd miss a lot of their formative years. We're all really close. I keep trying to convince myself "they'll all come visit" but I'm not actually sure that's true so that's a big part of why I haven't gone yet.

so yeah i don't think it will ever get easier and i'm really not sure how i am reconciling it lol but i know that i am supposed to be here right now. i know that i really like being here right now. plus i know that i honestly want to live outside the country so i might as well get everyone (including myself) ready for it). i have lived in 4 of the 5 most populated cities in the US plus ATL. i don't ever see myself staying put and Bali is calling me lol so yeah.

The weather here is tiresome though...

I like cold sometimes, snow sometimes, rain sometimes..

The eternal 65-85 temp makes time move real slow..

My biggest gripe with LA is that it continues to act like its not a desert with these hood ass planted palm trees when we KNOW this shit is the desert..

At least with this drought they gotta accept it..

Aint nothing like fall leaves, first snow, real ass white christmas, real skiing..

But the industry is here and the perpetual dream state is a true benefit in Being whatever and whomever the fuck you want

it's not in the lap of luxury or on the beach (which is down the street), it's like 10-15 minutes driving from anything resembling "hood"

LA is the second largest city in the country, you'll find places to live if you want a regular life outside of what you see on TV

But what's an affordable 2bedroom look like?
If I could get my rent down to 750-850, I'd REALLY think about moving out there.
Possible to find a 2 bedroom for $1500 or less?

Listen, I was a chain smoker when I moved here and my sister was clean-air obsessed. So I really felt like I had no dog in the fight At. All. But then my sister was living in Venice and talking about how clean the air is by the ocean, etc., and I'd be all yeah, yep, I know, it's great right? and then I would fly down for a couple of days and not be able to breathe. Yeah, it's on the ocean. No, it's not clean air.

Toronto used to have 20 to 30 Smog alert days per summer. Around 3 or 4 years ago it started clearing up and last summer we had none. I can't overstate how big a difference it makes. I wasn't even enjoying the summers during the worst of it. Apparently they shut down some coal-burning plants in the States that were crossing pollutants over the great lakes. That and the new fuel-efficient cars which they estimate was 1/3 of the problem.

Whatever it was....I'm kinda shocked that the problem got solved so quickly. There's hope.

Yep, after a week in LA, I was done with everything being a '45 minute" drive away.

And I hated keeping count of my drinks or being a designated driver to figure out who was going to be able to drive home at the end of the night. That's no way to live.

Last but not least, I like my seasons too. It might be corny but the first warm week of spring, the first hot summer days, the beginning of the fall chill and a couple of decent snows are underrated.

I can count on both hands the number of absolutely nightmarish traffic scenarios I've been in
but I've also telecommuted the past year and a half so I dont know the daily rush hour grind.

for me (non-driver) the lack of a great transportation system is far worse than traffic could ever be. shit, a day at the DMV might even be worse

For $2000/month in Metro Phoenix you're seeing a house with 5-6 bedrooms, 3+ bathrooms, 3000-4500 sq/ft and a pool w/spa.

You ain't seeing that at all anywhere in SoCal... Well maybe in DHS but I ain't a meth runner so there's no reason for me to move my family there.

Although I am trying not to rent so I am wondering where is the sweet spot to buy a house that is

1)Too far from LA proper. Don't mind commuting to work, I do mind commuting to party
2)Not culturally dead in the surrounding neighborhoods.
3)Isn't crazy expensive.

Willing to gentrify for food.

San diego:

Small downtown (could be pro)

Drunk bus

Nice beaches

Rabid conservatism

More fake tittays

More whiteness

More boring

Military

Khaki cargo pants and "comfortable" shirts

Golf

Its like boca raton with tampa's downtown basically

it's night and day.

San Diego is beautiful. Don't get me wrong. Perfect weather. Beaches everywhere. But culturally, it's just not where I want to be.

It's way too laid back. Super white like Double O said. Ultra conservative.

It's just weird. I've mentioned all of this before on here. Cats wearing there good flip flops to dinner type weird.

And another thing I would noticed, whenever I was walking around and heard a song blasting out of speakers in San Diego shit would be mad old. Like I'd hear "Shoop" by Salt 'n Pepa blasting out of a car or a club or "Gin 'n Juice".

The food also isn't as good besides Mexican.

I knew if a spot on Market all the way in the hood. And another spot somewhere in the hood.

If there's another spot, than I need to know. You from Brooklyn too, so was it good good or "I didn't expect this to be aight in San Diego" good?

In response to Reply # 104

Do you mean in terms of culture or population? I'm an S.D. native who's lived here all of my life. I feel that population wise, it's pretty diverse. There's A LOT of mexican and Asian communities throughout the city (a couple of black, arab as well). It really depends on what area you are in; but even when I go Downtown, P.B., etc., it's usually pretty diverse.

I can see how people not from here would say San Diego is really "white" due to the beach culture and everybody assumes that we all surf and wear flip flops lol.

And even the black people I would come across acted weird on some, "Why are you here, I'm the only black dude that's supposed to be here."

Bottom line most people of all races weren't just regular.

In L.A. people are just regular.

everyone's reasons for moving are different. some people leave nowhere and want to feel like somebody. some people leave nowhere and want to be around "cool" shit

I dont extremely love big city life but my wife was here and one of us had to move after a year of long distance, I wound up liking it more than I expected to

my advice is always to know natives who aren't really phased by the extra shit

let's also not even factor in you probably know jack about Seattle, especially if we're basing your knowledge on that "Starbucks on every corner" rhetoric.

have you been in America? cuz, there's a Starbucks on every corner.

1 inside the largest mall in LA
1 outside of said mall
1 in a mall adjacent hotel
1 in a shopping plaza

when I was in your city there were 2 on opposite sides of the street and I wondered how both could stay in business

this generalization aside, you'd have a hard time convincing anyone Seattle > Los Angeles. unless they werent the big city type

ass young Black folk there....so when people say the Bay is so much more "chill" I'm like.....................how?

In College, L.A. cats were all seen as the chill, laid back ones, while the Bay had those always on 10 types. So I can't speak on how the Bay really is outside of the sideshow type scenes, but just on surface...when I think about the Bay, I just picture a Thizz face.

My bay experience is always been slight earthy bohemian, knowledge of soul type cats even if they were pimps, players, pro culture. Everyone droppin gems, tellin stories, smokin, chillin, amd being an independant you. The hyphy movement was a time period of the bay tho that came and went. I completely forgot about that time period haha and I was out in Oakland during that.

we keep it moving,

But like...it won't feel like the Bay. Bc it's missing that note of sourness in ppl's attitudes that comes from the clouds and chilly air. Bay ppl turn that into sarcasm and irony and above-it-all-ness. I don't feel that in SoCal. Not in the same way.

Living in Vegas, I've made the weekend trip and I'm just amazed at how large it is. There's so much city to discover. Yeah, the traffic is unreal, and the idea of earthquakes kinda keeps me on edge, but from my handful of visits I think I"ve seen enough that I'd pull the trigger on living there.

In the United States, where you live depends on what natural disasters you can live with. I like mine with a week of notice, and bit of a longer duration. I don't do that ground moving thing. I don't do unpredictable winds either.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

Every reason people have named in here doesn't dissuade me in the slightest. I did a similar post on my Facebook, and all sorts of people named all sorts of reasons, nearly all of which were also negatives about scores of other cities in America and none of which outweighed the immense amount of positives to living in SoCal.

Never fucking leaving, man.

It'll take out Washington/Oregon/Cal north of Mendocino. LA is south of there.

In fact, the article specifically mentions that the earthquake threat that people associate with LA is misplaced and should be placed on the Pacific Northwest.

It's a great article. You'll enjoy reading it.

I've only experienced one minor earthquake. It produced the most beautiful....cleanest sine wave type bass sound that I've ever heard. I'm talking dj magic mike type bass that was the purest low frequency I've experienced. Is that typical? In the movies it's always portrayed more like an airplane going over your head....nothing like what I heard.

Definitely fair.

They are. I have more friends in LA than I did in DC.

>>• Traffic (DC ain't great, but it ain't L.A)

I actually object to this one. I genuinely prefer the 405 to the Beltway.

Yeah, and you didn't even mention the comedy scene here. DC has little-to-no comedy scene. Source: me, when I was briefly tackling the DC comedy scene.

I have no real opinion on this either way, as I love the dining both places.

>>• More green spaces

I guess, but I live on the Westside, and there's a healthy amount of green over here.

>>• If you like Vegas, we're getting an MGM across the river

For real. I would've gone with gilly face jpg myself.

>>• Better female-to-male ratio for us straights

Not entirely convinced this is true, as all my single friends out here have zero trouble finding action... but I met my wife while hitting on girls in DC, so I'll defer.

>>• Good, high-paying job market
>
>better than LA?

Probably true, though I'm getting paid way better out in LA than I was in DC, so I'm good.

>>• Bike-friendly (if you care about that shit)
>
>fine. we getting better tho

Westside is insanely bike-friendly... all the way to Beverly Hills, honestly. I do wish it was more bike-friendly overall, though-- the hills make biking out here harder than in DC, but you also don't want to bike in the snow/rain/winter, whereas in LA it's year-round, so it's a wash, imo.

Music scene is solid here. 9:30 Club, Black Cat rival L.A. clubs.

>The griffith observatory is free and we got beaches

I give you that on Griffith. For beaches you have to go far up coast or down coast to get to the nice ones.

As an LA transpant, I had to find good Mexican. And I did, though I keeping these spots to myself. LA still wins, hands down. Annandale/Seven Corners has solid Korean, Vietnamese. But nothing is fucking with the San Gabriel Valley. Best Asian food in the country.

>>• Good, high-paying job market

I'd say so. My career floundered in L.A., blew up here.

>• My house would cost three times as much in L.A.
Yep, I could have 3 houses for the price of my house. Now, the value increases faster but clearly that is a double-edged sword unless you sell and move away.

>• People are chill here (I have way more friends than ever)
Making friends is abnormally difficult out here. I've lived, worked all over the country and the culture is just.....unique. *shrug*

>• Traffic (DC ain't great, but it ain't L.A)
Yep

>• Culture – We have actual culture here (amazing museums,
>arts, free stuff to do)
Lol. Again, there is no argument. LA has a lot to do but rarely does it have the 'best' version of anything not asian or mexican food related. Except maybe comedy clubs?

>• Dining scene rivals L.A.
This is not fine dining but: there is almost no food delivery culture which is weird for a place built around driving.

>• More green spaces
True.

>• If you like Vegas, we're getting an MGM across the river
>(not across the state)
There's no better Vegas than Vegas.

>• Better female-to-male ratio for us straights
No idea

>• Good, high-paying job market
Pay is great out here, how else would people afford to live here?

>• Bike-friendly (if you care about that shit)
Can't compare but it's getting more and more bike-friendly

>• We're smarter, more literate and well-read
YES! I feel dumber every year. I do like the generally peaceful nature of southern californians, though.

>• Barack and Michelle live here

I have never been so happy to live in California than after this sad-ass election.

I didn't hate California. I have mixed feelings about NorCal - I grew up in the East Bay and 3 of my BFFs moved there after I introduced them. I'd live there but for the weather and the ppl. and, of course, having grown up in NorCal i was/am full of prejudices about SoCal. one of the reasons i visited earlier this month was to find out if the b/s i'd heard about LA is true - much of it has been regurgitated in this post and my other recent SoCal post. i found that by and large it's not true at all. at least not for me. and if it IS true i can live w/it. but for the most part that b/s is all wrong.

fuck you.

I'm saying this as a person constantly mistaken as Afro Latino by Mexicans.

I keep reading statuses from my folks in other cities, and about how coworkers are pro-Trump and all.

In L.A., basically 95% of my White coworkers are ALLL Democrat. Of course there's plenty who don't understand BLM or agree with it, but we never have those talks here. But just being at work and seeing the White folks all mad about Trump was actually a great thing.

LA's unaffordability in general and the traffic is what finally made me peace out on it at least for the time being. Hollywood is definitely fun in your late teens and twenties, early thirties sure. Beaches were cool but surprisingly i dont miss them. Now the weather cant be beat. and the women? oh boy. gorgeous but pretentious ladies in LA. San Diego now has a vibe much closer to Austin in terms of ladies. Digging it so far down here.

Sure, the weather is nice. BUT:

The distances are insane, you'll either Uber all day ($$$) or drive yourself, neither of which is super convenient. Public transportation doesn't exist in LA

Plus: LA to me is strip malls. Sure, there are nice areas too, but LA feels like it consists of 80% strip malls

NY > LA, forever

its been a 20+ year journey

i remember when the blueline opened 26 years ago

then we got the red and green

about 5 years ago I went to LA and hung with some folks in Korea town. I parked my car and we blasted around the city only using public transportation

its very very far from perfect but everytime I go visit I see yet another new line opening.

i reckon in about 20 years they are going to start closing off roads in downtown in the way Manhattan is changing now

Measure M just passed and it's going to change a lot about how you can travel around L.A. They know the city is growing and the people that are migrating from places that have decent public transit are going to be looking for the same thing in a city of L.A. size.

Traffic sucks right now but soon it's going to be nice.

Year-round riding and legal lane splitting through traffic. That alone keeps SoCal on my list.

Hollywood's population is 123,000
LA's population is 4 million

all of my friends have regular jobs, their parents from here had regular jobs
Beverly Hills is where wealthy people live and shop
Hawthorne is where poor people live and risk getting shot
El Segundo is where you get a good job if your credentials are right
Downtown they stack homeless people on top of affluent folks
Inglewood is the center of everything authentically black in a good way and authentically uncomfortable in other spots

my point is it's a big city with people from all walks of life and I still barely know everything there is

I've definitely gotten the Varnel Hill "hit me anytime" talk from Hollywood acting people, but I consider that a personal failing of theirs and not a LA thing

I spent a year of live in LA/SoCal only to come to the conclusion that it's cool to visit sporadically BUT not live.

Sure, it's always 70, sunny and clear on most days for those who can't tolerate milder weather but in turn you have to deal with:

-EXTREME cost of living and MODEST wages (the COL and wages do not match at all)
soul crushing traffic (fuck rush hour, it's RUSH DAY every day)
-toxic air (I swear I got asthma from breathing in that air)
-insane distances and over reliance on a acr (16K miles put on my car in 1 year)
-lack of real diversity (compared to most of the US, it's "diverse", but keep it real, it's basically an extension of Mexico)
-extreme disparities of wealth (it's a very poor city/region that has very small but extremely wealthy pockets of money) ...deep CLASSICISM
-overpopulation
-lack of real culture (as someone said, it's all strip malls, Mexican restaurants and burger joints)
-superficiality in the "industry" areas
-an overall negative vibe despite the sunny veeneer
-brush fires
-lack of water

Couldn't pay me to live there again ...fuck a sunny day, I'll take breathable air, real culture/diversity, less congestion/overpopulation and a life outside of sitting in a car ANYDAY

Northeast all day.

mind you I telecommute so I dont know how bad rush hour is, but I average maybe one nightmarish traffic jam a year

everything else is definitely bad about LA, but Im also allergic to industry people
