as to your main point, we know there is only room for a couple good Black actors to be famous at any given point and there wasn't room for him because there was a bit of a glut with his look or age range
he still works, so that's better than a lot of folks

Not that long after "Fresh," I saw him on some Lifetime TV series. Figured that was going to be a temporary thing and he'd start getting getting big. NOPE!

5. "I love Fresh, but the acting was kind of uneven. " In response to Reply # 0
But the dialogue was kind of tough for any actor to spit out. All that to say that movie is in my top 15 but I didn't necessary think any actor other than Sam J was very strong in that movie.
Two other things:
1. I kind of think there is no correlation between good child actors and being a good adult actors. Jodie Foster is the only one who I think completely nails both.
2. A national tv commercial pays serious dough. Like more than a beloved indie.
