How does that work? I remember 10-15 years ago, you could get a hooptie for $500-1000 to get you around. Now wages for the working poor are basically the same but that hooptie is $3000-5000.
^ and this is just one simple online search. if i roll through any of the several shady-looking used car dealers in any given car-dependent city i can probably find a car for less than $3000.

No buses. Not even a lot of taxies.
Some folks had barely working cars to get back and forth. And many people carpooled with coworkers or paid someone what they could to take them to work. If they couldn't afford that, they walked. And they walked a LONG way.
Also, when I was younger, people rode bikes a lot more. Grown people, I mean. That fell off in the mid 90s. Or maybe they still did, but I didn't see it as often once we moved out of the projects.
But I've noticed a LOT more people riding bikes and walking to work now. And here, the projects are so far from everything else, if you have to walk to work, you're basically having to walk at least an hour.
Folks just do what they have to do. It sucks, but that's life. And that's one reason I don't let anyone drive my car. Ever. It's my life line here.

Then you learn to do it. Reason I can work on cars now is 'cause I was broke as hell and had a car that needed work. Couldn't afford a mechanic so I picked up a Chilton guide on my ride Murray's and did it myself.
Used tires and junkyard parts kept me rollin for a long ass time.

18. "repairs to pass inspection can be cheap" In response to Reply # 13
typically it comes down to an O2 sensor, basic tune up, or something of the sort. O2 sensor on a Corolla ain't shit but $15-$20 and doesn't take too long to put in. A basic plug and wires tune up can be done for cheap and handled within 15 minutes. Only time it gets expensive is if it has a massive exhaust problem.
If the shit still doesn't pass there are cheap ways to cheat too.

Metro Detroit is VERY car dependent, but you can still cop a bucket for cheap from CL.
Same in PHX, car dependent city and you can cop a bucket for the low, but you gotta watch it; a lot of cheap cars out this way have blown head gaskets. That's a really common problem with cars of any age out here.
Plus, here and in Detroit everybody got somebody in their neighborhood that works on cars so repairs are reasonable.

11. "i wish folks would couple transportation costs along with housing" In response to Reply # 0
when discussing affordability. like here in Atlanta, the housing's cheap (consistently in the top 10 of major metros), but when coupled with transportation costs, we drop to the bottom six.

... feels like folks are maybe being too dismissive of how high a mountain this is to climb. If you can barely eat, pay your rent, where is the $1K coming from to buy said hooptie? That's the problem with homelessness a lot of times, people/families can't cobble together the downpayment to get a place...
