it's that everyone left
like
sure there are a few dozen people like me who have been around since day 1, but we're medium contributers
and there are people like rtistic who came through mid life and have made their place
and there are some peek-back-inners like stace or bin or whatever
and i'm sure there are yet still some lurkers from the old time
but out of those people who really made this place what it was, for whom, better or worse, admitted or not, this place was a focus in their actual real life, and who were connected to each other because of it
who we got left, for real
you reg teef atruhead rjcc
and two of those are mods, and two are fucking siblings lol. and out of the 5, really only atruhead posts, yall others are mostly just repliers now.
i'm sure i'm overlooking a somebody or another. so maybe we have 10. 10 of what once was... dozens? hundreds?
remember when atruhead and rjcc were among the most reviled on the board? now look i'm nostalgizing them as part of an endangered group
anyways
babbles desus and koku did not unto themselves make this place. it was a whole roster of humans who are now focused elsewhere.
another thing i will mention is that yeah twitter and folks aging are decent guesses as to why this happened, but i would also wager that part of what contributed to such a strong community in the first place, was the strong niche this place originated from and was identified with (the roots, d, common, philly hip hop heads, etc).
As the site expanded its roster of artists, its scope in general, its niche widened, then saturated, then dissipated, becoming less and less relevant to the site itself.
Now that isnt necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, and anyway certainly that particular brand of subculture - the roots/d/common/neo soul thing - may have become less relevant to us, or to the world
but I'll bet that there are other platforms today, that have strong focused niches that are relevant to a subculture, that have strong communities not so dissimilar from what we were. not the same, we were indeed special, but more in that direction than what we have here now. in fact i know there are. they aren't as cool as we were, but theyre there __
