Those types of convos are getting fewer in number, as new social media sites spring up and ciphon off part of the audience. Twitter is faster, Facebook is maybe more personal (and has notifications), instagram for images etc.

I still think there are certain kinds of posts that still only happen here, and that, as people leave, aren't happening ANYWHERE. Look in the archives to refresh your memory.

Ask me anything posts / meme posts / genderwarz posts / etc. All of these were precursors to the black internet we know today.

A well-moderated discussion board is still a thing of beauty to me. The answer to saving the boards, to me, has to do with identifying what's still great about it, and supporting those types of conversations.

Side note:
Yes, btw, ladies left. Because Okayplayer, borrowing from hip-hop, is too often a male fantasy space. It's the same problem reddit has with white men. We did better than most hip-hop sites but ladies ain't trying to deal with misogyny all day AND hold down a real job / raise kids. It's exhausting for me as a dude frankly.

Thought also about going invite-only for the boards (actually I think new registrations are off already), and then starting to invite actual artists back into the mix. This used to be, and could be again, a safe place for working creatives to talk about their work in serious terms.

Anyway I've typed enough lol. I'm supposed to be writing code right now.

Usually discussions of gender identity, sexuality, drug use, sexual orientation, aging, and sports agendas bring out different perspectives.

It's not bad at all as there are FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, worse discussions happening on popular forums across the web that some of us may or may not frequent from time to time/

There's been a noticeable lack of Black History Month hate filled posts compared to other forums online which is quite refreshing as a POC.

Sure, I can search Twitter to see what folks think of a new movie or album, but it's too spread out and based off of real time. You miss a hot convo on Twitter, even by 15-20 minutes, and it's DEAD. Same with jokes....you can try hard to go back and re-read everything, but you can't get in on it, and will even sound late if you bring it up off the net.

Also, with Social Media, it's ONLY based on who you know and follow. OKP has a range of folks that may appear to be limited compared to other mediums, hence "OKPlayery" and "Only on OKP," yet most of our circles are much more limited, based on our age, location, college, and job...so it's still a wide range, even now as a dried up graveyard of what it once was.

What this means is...for example, I made the post "list your favorite songs from 90-92" on here. I would probably get a decent response on Facebook from my family and older friends, but it wouldn't be NEARLY as expansive as what was provided here. I could also try Twitter, and even with the 7K followers I have, I know I would still get the same responses like "Poison" and "Nothin but a G thang" vs seeing Jane Child "Don't wanna fall in love" and Showbiz & AG type songs. This site still has some deep R&B and Hip Hop heads who aren't TOO deep/underground.

Niggas mostly got checked for coming out of pocket at women on here. Even if the woman was in the wrong. I remember the whole stop telling women to smile thing turned into a shitstorm. But it was tame compared to discussions on that topic on other social media platforms. Women stopped coming here when it boring. It got boring because of over moderating and banning the entertaining posters who ruffled feathers.
