"Presidential Primary Post | Pt. III | Super Tuesday Edition "

It's going to be fascinating to see what happens on Tuesday.

Big news today out of the DNC:

Tulsi Gabbard - Vice Chair of the DNC - has resigned and pledged her support to the Sanders campaign:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UM8F4EuUbw&feature=youtu.be

"Aloha. I’m Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.

As a veteran of two Middle East deployments, I know firsthand the cost of war.
I know how important it is that our commander-in-chief has the sound judgment required to know when to use America's military power--and when not to use that power.
As vice chairman of the DNC I am required to stay neutral in Democratic primaries, but I cannot remain neutral any longer. The stakes are too high.

That’s why today …. I’m endorsing Senator Bernie Sanders to be the next president and commander-in-chief of the United States.

We need a Commander in Chief who has foresight and good judgment - who understands the need for a foreign policy which is robust in defending the safety and security of the American people - who will not waste precious lives and money on interventionist wars of regime change.

Such counterproductive wars undermine our national security and economic prosperity.
As elections continue across the country, the American people are faced with a clear choice: We can elect a president who will lead us into more interventionist wars of regime change -- or we can elect a president who will usher in a new era of peace and prosperity.

With this clear choice in mind, today I am resigning as Vice-Chair of the DNC so that I can strongly support Bernie Sanders as the democratic nominee for President of the United States."

i mean, i'll take her over anyone the repubs wanna put up, but I think Bernie is the change we thought Barack was going to be (not that I have TOO many beefs w/ BHO).

i've been saying for a few years that the U.S. needs a political revolution, and Bernie is more representative of that than anyone I've seen thus far. not sure of what Bernie could do if elected since we need a congressional revolution as well, but it would be a start.

she ain't done shit to change her messaging. she's still presumptuous as shit. she still is horrible about being called out on her shit.

she ain't the worst (FUCK Lieberman)
but she is far from the best.

still gonna vote for her (or whoever Dem) because Supreme Court

but a Hillary vote means likely more TPP fast-tracking and big business asslicking at a time when the people really ain't tryna hear that

it also means no Trump (or Trump proxy)

Clinton's power def. is fueled by the South...I think Bernie will do better in some parts of the midwest (Minnesota and maybe even Wisconsin...And we all know Vermont is his....Colorado is going to be a battle though....)....But right now it's all about upping those delegate numbers....

Clinton holds double-digit leads in Georgia, Tennessee and Texas
By Kyle Balluck

Hillary Clinton tops rival Bernie Sanders by a nearly 2-to-1 margin in Georgia, Tennessee and Texas in new polls ahead of voting on Super Tuesday.

Clinton has a 34-point lead among likely Democratic primary voters in Georgia, 64 percent to 30 percent, according to a trio of NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist polls released early Sunday.

Clinton’s lead is 26 points in Tennessee, 60 to 34 percent.

And the former secretary of State tops the Vermont senator in Texas by 21 points, 59 to 38 percent.

Pollsters surveyed likely Democratic primary voters in the three Southern states between Feb. 18 and 25. There is a 4.6 percent margin of error in Georgia, 4.9 percent margin of error in Tennessee and 5 percent margin of error in Texas.

a pretty legit ground game for latino votes by the republican party.

i don't see how texas turns purple when moderate republicans in texas are getting clear majorities and even extreme conservatives are pulling 45%. those numbers from 2014 were pretty damning.

i'm shaking my head, but every brown person in my family older than 40 voted republican today.

which, again, is INSANE given that this is a party that is likely to have a racist-as-shit platform.

democrats need to get their shit together and provide a real vision here. not take that shit for granted. cause those family values and jesus pitches are working on thousands and thousands of people.

Yeah, it won't hurt Trump in the primaries. But in a general election that Klan commercial with Trump front and center is going to be glorious....Feigned ignorance don't work....

Side eye to anyone saying the Dems, just on a base level, is the same as the Republican base....

B. Clinton? He was def.on some bullshit....

But let's be clear here...Questioning rather people should take a black, freshmen senator seriously during his run for President when America had never elected a black candidate in the history of this country is vastly different than giving shout outs to a terrorist organization that lynched black folk.....

I was more disturbed when I learned about H. Clinton's "super predator" comment back in the early '90s.......I wanted her to apologize....I wanted her to distance herself from that bullshit and make it known that it was repugnant....And she did....

Trump? Dude doesn't apologize for ANYTHING...That fool was given a layup...Very easy path....The Klan is a softball question...And dude was brazenly calculating and so scared of pissing off his base that he wouldn't even shit on them. THE FUCKING KLAN...

Nah....it's not the same. At all...I need y'all to chill with that....

>murph you said cnn and msnbc no one watches those networks
>that are going be swayed one way or another

Yeah...I also said social media...Trending on Twitter, Facebook the Gram and a shit load of online media platforms...

The thing u have to remember is when MAINSTREAM MEDIA (FOX, CNN, MSNBC) picks up on something that is trending on social media, consider it big (they usually late and clueless when it comes to such things...).......

When u got everyone from the Guardian to TMZ covering it, people are paying attention....

Not only dick jokes....But feigned rebuke of the KKK....Right now they are having discussions about denouncing David Duke. Let that sink in....

I will never underestimate the anger of white working class folks mixed with racist white folks looking to TAKE THEIR COUNTRY BACK...It's going to be a battle...But I believe that Obama coalition is going to come through...Just a minute ago, a Latino woman was protesting at a Trump rally. As they were escorting her out, Trump said, "Are you from Mexico?"

U got to get more than just 35 to 40 percent to win in the general. That's Trump....

It's reason enough to be fearful....America, for the most part, can be very nuanced and intelligent....But a very large chunk of the American public is not that smart....

That's why I was fearful of Bernie getting the nomination....Not because Bernie would be some crazy loon that would have everybody waiting in line for food...I agree with much of his platform....It's the fact that a lot of the folks that Bernie would need to vote for him to win in November are not the types to separate Socialism from Communism....To a lot of those voters THEY think its the same.....Believe me. I've talked to a few of them....

If Bernie gets in being more than a one term president will be tough. Republicans will make life very tough and after seeing what happened to Obama's hope I wonder whether Bernie supporters will be any better when they realise they face 8 years of grind if they want even incremental gains. Rhetoric for the possible is one thing, keeping enthusiasm and energy through a presidential term is another. A lot of people seem to expend themselves once an election ends.

Hillary likewise faces one term issues over her lack of charisma. The Obamas pretty much had to be the GOAT of first families and they've still had to fight so hard to keep in the good graces of enough people. Hillary has trouble energising her own supporters.

Long hard slog, as it normally is for nuanced moderates.

Just IMO though.

I think this inteview broke on Meet The Press = NBC

I haven't even heard it mentioned since

a vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee

Iraq veteran

resigns her chair to endorse Bern

= crickets

confirms my suspicion about some of the motivation for MHP's firing

I turned on some of the post Super Tuesday coverage

they aren't even covering HRC that much any more

in a hour, it's maybe 55min Trump, 5 min HRC/Bern

and they usually frame that 5 minutes in an extremely biased way

should be obvious by now

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you can't understand it without an explanation

you can't understand it with an explanation

If numbers out there are where they are now, with him as the face of the party, they'll lose the senate for sure, and could even lose their grip on the house. the more he get's trounced, so goes congress.

I'm still not comfortable at all writing him off. This dude's pretty much leading the revolution Bernie wanted, except it's of america's dumbest people, which we have no shortage of.

I'm starting to wonder if there really will be a brokered convention. They'll lose the presidency, but will at least have a better shot at maintaining congress.

Or he wins and we're all entertained. And fucked.

In response to Reply # 36
Tue Mar-01-16 12:00 PM by denny

Trump has won so far with college-educated voters.

What concerns me....is that Trump's rise has been credited to the 'uneducated'...the white trash vote. This is an under-estimation and anyone who thinks this is in for a rude awakening. His rise is due to the anti-intellectual vote....which is different than the 'dumb vote'.

Culturally, Americans need to look in the mirror. Anti-intellectualism is rampant. Even amongst 'smart' people. I see evidence of it all the time. Even on OKP. The only way to defeat it is to properly identify it and I'm not seeing much of that right now. Americans are so familiar with anti-intellectualism I'm not convinced they are ABLE to see it where it is. Like on South Park for example.

Trump is purposefully baiting intellectual criticism. Does anyone here truly think he didn't know that was a Moussillini quote? Of course he did. Just like he knew he was re-tweeting a white supremist earlier in the month. He KNOWS that it will set off the political pundits...the 'intellectuals'. Any outrage he can manufacture amongst who is perceived to be intellectual only galvanizes his anti-intellectual target market.

I can see this whole thing play out from a mile away. Trump is a puppet-master.

If you're passionate about an issue you're a 'douchebag' and 'politically correct'.

If you take up a social cause you're a 'social justice warrior'.

If you identify racism for what it is....you are 'overanalyzing everything'.

This, imo, is the larger problem and that's what trump is tapping into. There are plenty of reasonably intelligent, educated people who have swung to far in that direction.

better keep it safe and talk about sports, tv shows or food. I mean I enjoy those things too but I've met way too many smart and educated people who seemingly don't want to talk about anything "serious".
IMO not only does it do no service to public discourse, but it means that the extreme right and its sophistic ideas take hold very easily. Clearly facts hold no dominion over Trump supporters and just because there's only 35-40% of them this time doesn't mean we're all living in a brave new world already.

Hillary, through no fault of her own, is a textbook example of what this backlash targets. Obama's grace and likeability might have countered it. Bernie's down-to-earth genuine, everyman-type personality might have countered it.

But no....we just happen to have Hillary being the one that has to face it down. Really unfortunate timing. The only way to beat this thing is for his opponent to be able to relate to people. That's precisely her greatest weakness.

And none of these Hillary head-to-head polls are worth anything. I might be persuaded if the polls remain that way after they debate each other and their campaigns shift towards each other. Until then....I'm calling a Trump landslide.

67. "I'm not saying dumb = uneducated"
In response to Reply # 47

I'm uneducated

I think you're taking too much issue with the word dumb. And i get your angle completely, that people shouldn't blow it off as "Oh it's just a bunch of stupid hicks who like this guy". liberals do it all the time. Same way people underestimated the appeal of Palin, or why poor whites would seemingly vote against their own interests. I don't think Palin is all that bright but she does understand how so-called big city liberals look down on the type of people who like her, and she knew how to harness that, and they love her because they feel she's fighting for them. Trump, who as simple as his message comes off isn't unintelligent by any means, has just kind of expanded that strategy to multiple areas

And while anti-intellectualism is a huge factor, He's also preaching a really populist message. He says alot of shit that actually is true regrading money in politics, insurance companies, big pharma, Irag, etc... and people love how he's not scared to go after republicans. he's railing against PC which so many people hate, and he's also playing on fear of terrorism and that he projects this strong-man image. Americans LOVE that shit.

And i would say so-called smart people falling for Trump, given he's offered zero substance, and has been caught in lies repeatedly, are dumber than these uneducated whites falling for him, at least I understand their angle. There are different variations of dumb.

All that said, he has a far way to climb back from. You can't mathematically win the presidency without a sizable chunk of the hispanic vote. not to mention a good chunk of women, and minorities in general. I know he'll scale his rhetoric back in the general, i know he's an entertainer, who comes off far more "likable" than Hillary, but i don't think it will be enough to overcome damage done. Hopefully

There are actually educated whites voting for him. They arent dumb. Its time we start accepting whats really going on here. The "uneducated voter" excuses doesnt work at all after the amount of percentage points he is winning by. These are white educated people that agree with him.

Kinda thinking about going in CO tomorrow, but if it's really much more than casting a vote, I'm not sure I'm into it.

Not sure how CO is set up, but if it's anything like MN, you can just cast a vote for your presidential candidate and leave afterwards.

Report: Donald Trump Requested That a Group of Black Students Be Removed From His Rally Before It Had Even Started

In Georgia on Monday, about 30 black Valdosta State University students were removed from a Donald Trump campaign event, hosted at the school’s PE complex. The students were removed at the candidate’s request, the Des Moines Register reports, before the event even began.

“We didn’t plan to do anything,” one of the students, Tahjila Davis, 19, said. “They said, ‘This is Trump’s property; it’s a private event.’ But I paid my tuition to be here.” Secret Service agents escorted the students out of the event; Valdosta police ushered them farther away from the rally.

“I don’t understand why they would do something like that,” she said. “I have not experienced any racism on this campus until now.” Valdosta State was a whites-only campus until 1963.

Inside, the Tallahassee Democrat reports, Trump urged his fans to get to the polls on Tuesday. “Tomorrow’s going to be a big day,” he said. “We’re going to have a lot of success. I love Georgia. And I want you to lead the pack if you can.”

“We are going to win at every single level,” he continued. “We are going to win at health care. We are going to win with education. We are going to win at the borders. We are going to win with our military. We are going to win, win, win, win.”

Trump enjoys the support of a broad swathe of racists, from former KKK Grand Dragon David Duke to current Maine Governor Paul LePage.

This is still not a measurement with any correlation, whatsoever, with how a general election will turn out. It means nothing for Hillary, or for Bernie.

You give the media a whole lot of credit when you can pretend they're on your side.

You must just be pretending not to understand.

You can't poll people about how they'll vote at the end of a race that hasn't even started yet. This isn't a difficult idea to comprehend.

Sanders Supporters Trolling Elizabeth Warren To Get Her Endorsement
So far the progressive senator remains silent and Sanders volunteers are becoming more agressive

By Adi Cohen and Jacob Steinblatt

After Senator Sanders’ disappointing finish in South Carolina and with Super Tuesday looming, Bernie fans are looking for a savior in Elizabeth Warren. And so, of course, they’re kinda trolling her.

After Clinton’s landslide South Carolina win was announced Saturday night, Team Bernie started bombarding Senator Warren with tweets and posts calling on her to endorse Clinton’s challenger. The Massachusetts Democrat and progressive hero has not endorsed any of the candidates, and now, hours before the polls open in her home state, the Bernie bros are hoping she could give him a last minute bump.

Thousands of tweets calling for the endorsement have been posted during the last 24 hours, a Vocativ social media analysis found. The most popular tweet came from the Sanders campaign itself, which linked to an op-ed Warren published Tuesday about the need for family leave. “This is exactly what our campaign is talking about,” Sanders’ tweet said.

But, not everyone was content to just retweet Bernie. And from there, the calls got less polite. First they asked:

Then they begged; Then they demanded...

Adding to the push for a Warren endorsement of Sanders was a fake New York Times article that made the rounds on social media Monday. It claimed that Warren did in fact endorse the Democratic candidate, but the Times’ deputy executive editor confirmed the story was fabricated.

As Sen. Warren stuck to her silence, Sanders supporters started to be more aggressive, speculating why she is refraining from endorsing:

Some of them expressed their frustration in a more aggressive way on the Sanders supporters Reddit and Slack platforms.

people calling into these am radio shows are vowing to not vote if Cruz doesn't win, or never support Trump are mostly full of shit imo. They'll suck it up and vote against Hillary.

I believe the Bernie crowd more when they say they'll stay home. But i think as someone pointed out in another post the other day, it's likely a good portion of the Bernie crowd was never gonna vote for Hillary to begin with. Or vote at all.

It's not like Iowa where everyone stands in the corner of a high school gym and then yells at other people until they get tired. You just sit in a classroom, listen to a spiel and write your candidate's name down. There's other stuff, too, but I ducked out immediately after I voted in 2008, but I think there's other stuff they decide too.

My wife's never participated in a caucus before and is super excited about this, so I might be sticking around for the whole thing. Probably going to depend on how big the crowd is.

In response to Reply # 0

almost exclusively because of the Black vote.

There's been some fascinating editorials done examining the black vote (particularly in the South) and how it aligns fairly neatly with right-of-center, social conservatism and status-quo policy.

There are so many shifts occurring simultaneously within both parties during this cycle. Heard a very astute analysis that was arguing that while many deem Trump & Sanders to be a threatening disease that seeks to unseat the Establishment within both parties, they actually are beta-test solutions for what's actually taking place on the ground in both parties - albeit older versions which need refinement and modernization.

i'm pretty certain hillary might hit 75% of dems in my area, but i've seen dozens of bernie stickers/signs and just 1 for hillary. and i been looking, cause i want to know who these people are.

(then again, i also expect republicans to heavily outnumber dems, and i'm gonna guess cruz gets above 40% in the area).

But Clinton has that machine behind her

She has been running for this presidency for years and has spent a lot of political capital.
That's hard for a relatively unknown newcomer to overcome

where's hillary been other than a negative in those midterms? how are she and the dnc planning to make 2018 different?

i understand not taking bernie and his people seriously when they talk about political revolution, but i know tulsi and grayson are going to fight. tulsi has eyes on leadership if the party shifts left. grayson knows what the deal is in florida. these are people who have stakes in the future of the party, not just in whether hillary wins this year.

In response to Reply # 120

the President's party gaining congressional seats in the middle of a new president's first term? That thing that's happened right after 9/11 and never before or since?

I'd love to see a Sanders wing develop in the Democratic party and recruit people to run in state level races. And how is a President Sanders who hasn't followed through on half of his campaign promises going to lead to an increased turnout among a voting block that he's not even drawing in primaries?

If you think Bernie Sanders is a better presidential candidate than Hillary Clinton, say so. But potential midterm turnout is an odd category to base it on, particularly since it will statistically favor Republicans.

In response to Reply # 127

2) we don't know that bernie specifically helps, but that's not a reason to settle for the status quo. we do know is the current democratic coalition is good for maybe a president and maybe maybe some supreme court justices and that's about it. i'm all for any kind of change.

we do know that tea party has come out of nowhere to dominate the legislative agenda...are we so afraid that are ideas are BAD that we don't think we can do the same? the only things that have energized the democratic base and over the past few years are leftist issues that the dnc has been afraid to touch until they had already won. and those are issues that minds nationally have been changed on, not just the base. we're gonna win on lgbt. we're gonna win on drug decriminalization. we'd win on prison and police reform if we did't let republicans dominate those conversations. we win on wages and income inequality whenever we choose to have the fight.

it's very likely that the best route forward for the democrats is somewhere in between, but that needs to be articulated. my problem isn't that hillary wouldn't be a fine president. my problem is that she and the dnc are avoiding the conversation because they take shit one election at a time. they're afraid to lose, so the country is slipping away.

they're so out of touch they want to bring up guns at debates even though that's a losing issue for the party nationally. and they're supposed to be the ones that *get* how elections work? they're supposed to be the rational ones? they should have gotten that shit done in '08 if they cared, not use it as a wedge issue in the primaries.

all of the talk about bringing in new voters to the party.
voter turnout is significantly down.

all of the talk about the "enthusiasm gap" between him and clinton.
these enthusiastic niggas aint turning out to vote for bernie.

it is hard to argue how electable you are as a democrat
when you cant make ANY headway with a core democratic constituency
like black voters.
especially in states where we gotta go to war with repubs in the general.

i love my nigga bernie
like a substitute teacher day.
but he might just not be motivating the base
outside of a concentrated niche.

my state primary dont take place til april 26.
shit may be a wash by then.

1) the issues aren't things that can be fixed in this cycle. they take years of involvement, and Facebook activists aren't built for that shit. not to disparage millenials specifically, because most americans aren't built for it, but this is going to take hard work and patience.

if you're backing bernie because you thought there was a chance we were gonna wake up scandinavian in 11 months, you're probably going to give up on politics or vote republican by the time you're middle-aged.

2) dnc and hillary definitely did their part to suppress interest in the primary. you've seen a lot of it on okp, and okp isn't exactly establishment. we should appreciate just how amazing of a candidate barack obama was in 2008 to overcome those expectations.

Bernie is going all the way to convention - and even if he doesn't win, his presence in this election is akin to:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8RCQDDsMpU

He is seeding an evolution in progressive politics that will bear fruit in 2018, 2020, and beyond.

That said, it's both fascinating and discouraging how he has not been able to get any traction in the South.

Maybe Carson drops out this round.
But now Cruz showed he has a glimmer of hope so he isn't dropping. Rubio was competitive in many states so he ain't dropping. Kascich is just waiting until Ohio.

All that means Trump never needs to get more than like 35% of the vote in each state. That's probably close to the upper limit of his support

Trial run, at least.

On the other hand, Christie's not such a hot commodity these days. Supposedly he has the lowest approval ratings of any NJ Governor in the history of the polls. Another fun thing: today SIX major NJ newspapers published a joint editorial calling on Christie to resign as Governor over his Trump endorsement.

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/governor-races/271394-nj-papers-call-for-christies-resignation

Could be deciding between runningmate and Attorney General. Christie certainly seems to want a job.

The talking heads don't seem to realize that this election is all about the establishment versus the outsiders.

The number of Americans happy with the status quo is not very big, and when the economy takes the inevitable downturn in the near future, Trump is going to look even better.

There are huge portions of the Republican party who will not vote for Donald Trump. Some of their main cheerleaders and communicators are saying they won't vote for him....people who have huge audiences.

The Republicans changed the order of their primaries after Romney to front load it with a bunch of either very southern and extremely White Republican voters or other states where Republicans may be in the minority, but their base is again very White and more to the right. They did that so a potential frontrunner could lock up a nomination sooner....now their stuck with Trump who can slow foot dissing the KKK days before Republicans in Georgia, Alabama, ...days ago South Carolina......lol..

people shouldn't take this as a sign of what would happen against Hillary... Republicans have lost the popular vote in 5 out of the last 6 elections....and Barak Obama kicked them in their asses twice...

a united Republican party couldn't beat a Democrat for President..

no way they doing it with this shit...

It's obviously over for Sanders, nomination-wise. But I'm glad it wasn't a complete Clinton sweep.

Although I think Clinton is deeply corrupt and dishonest, I might bring myself to cast a lesser-evil vote for her in the GE, just to help keep that racist asshole out of the White House. Or maybe not. Either way, very little positive change is going to occur until we have better choices.

In light of what's happening with Trump I think it would be best for everybody.

One thing I considered is that Sanders hasn't really directed attacked Clinton much. This may suggest that seeing out the rest of the campaign isn't such a bad idea. He hasn't gone negative so what's the harm?

I think the harm is in his supporters. They HAVE gone negative....and with Trump getting stronger it's time to unite. There is no pragmatic reason to explore any more perceived shortcomings of Hillary Clinton. I hope Bernie sees that and realizes any more unnecessary damage done to her is only gonna hurt the party from here on out. Again....it's not him....it's his supporters. And some of their criticisms (mine too) line up with what Trump will attack her on. ie campaign financing.

If Sanders were really smart he would turn the Flint debate into a formal concession....face to face....with a well-written speech about the danger of Trump. He's made his mark. I believe he's paved the way for a democratic socialist to be viable in the future. But there's nothing more to accomplish here. And trump is scaring the shit outta me.

If he dropped out now, the spectrum of debate would instantly become narrower. Clinton would not have to work as hard to get those voters who gravitated to Sanders. And an alarmist discourse, in which any criticism of Clinton helps Trump, means giving up all pressure on Clinton from the left. If there had been no Sanders, Clinton would not be doing better against Trump, because she'd be running further to the right, and the base would more apathetic in general. And nobody is shifting from Sanders to Trump. If they won't vote for Hillary, they wouldn't have done so anyway.

I think Sanders can play an important role in reigning in some of the more extremist criticism of Clinton. Look....I supported Bernie fully. But not on the same grounds that alot of his supporters do. And truthfully, I don't think Bernie agrees with some of the harsher critiques either. That's why an eloquent speech that disavows himself from some of the extreme anti-Hillary stuff can get some of his votes back.

Question for you....what exactly is the point of going further? I guess you're saying that quitting now would let Hillary off the hook and abandon some of the more leftist positions she's had to take to counter Bernie? I guess my position is that mission is already accomplished. Is there any issue specifically that you think Bernie can still effect Hillary on? Also....I'd argue that Bernie's power to force Hillary left is already tapped out anyways. She only needed to do that while he was gaining momentum. Now? What reason does she have to appease the progressives?

I suppose there's always the argument that he owes his supporters a fight. But honestly, I think he owes his supporters a Not-Trump president more.

...is going to give us a Trump presidency is pure alarmism. I haven't even had a chance to vote in my state yet. More importantly, unless Sanders runs as a third party candidate and splits the vote, the accusation that he is helping Trump by contesting the primary is bullshit, IMO. Dropping out before people have a chance to vote in Michigan, Florida, Ohio, Louisiana, etc., will just make Sanders supporters more bitter and less likely to turn out at all in November.

I think Sanders should keep it up...Preach his message...Keep Clinton on a more progressive tone...He is doing his job. Keep it up for another two weeks. But turn down the whole Clinton = Queen Wall Street stuff....

Basically, I agree with what this guy is saying....

Whenever Sanders drops out, it was always nearly inevitable. But the "fall in line" argument should be rejected if it's applied to the left more generally.

If you said to civil rights activists in 1964, "Don't criticize LBJ, it will help Goldwater," all but the most conservative would have rejected that logic. They understood the need to be independent, not supine and fearful. We should too.

Also, the Daily Beast is funded by the Clinton Foundation, so I take everything I read on there with a wheelbarrow full of salt.

If Sanders can't pull the upset on March 15 then I think it would be more beneficial to that side of the aisle if he dropped out. It ain't hard to tell at this point how this primary season is going to go. The feeling was in the air when Iowa and NH had big wins at the voting booth but not among the superdelegates. The superdelegates are speaking so all of the Dem voters can go back to the kid table.

It started with them talking down to black folk. That's what drove African-Americans to vote for Clinton. Hearing someone call u stupid for voting for someone as if u r a aimless child smacked of sickening smugness....

I know Bernie was never about that bullshit. Dude is a stand up guy with a message that deserves to be heard. But some of his followers fits more of the mold of bomb throwers....Sort of a Bizarro World version of the Conservative Tea Party....I know the more level headed Bernie supporters were looking at these folks like, WTF....????

I also recall a lot of liberal white arguments about how "black people owe Hillary the vote" as well. And a lot of people saying Hillary didn't deserve black votes were black leftists. The fact is, it's easy to find anecdotal evidence of ugly shit supporters did on both sides, and then spin a story about the whole campaign out of that.

Sanders didn't lose the black vote because his supporters were worse than Clinton's. He lost because she had an overwhelming advantage in money, political connections with ranking black politicians, and media backing.

I suppose it could help give him some momentum, but I have to assume most people who would be swayed by Warren are already on the Bernie side of the fence.

But yeah, the BernieBro wing is counter-productive as fuck

I find it ironic & fascinating to hear conservatives that oppose Trump point out that he's using dog whistle politics. This election has turned America inside out & upside down.

Hillary Clinton Is Backed by Major Republican Donors
Posted on February 22, 2016 by Eric Zuesse.
Eric Zuesse

An analysis of Federal Election Commission records, by TIME, which was published on 23 October 2015, showed that the 2012 donors to Romney’s campaign were already donating more to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign than they had been donating to any one of the 2016 campaigns of — listed here in declining order below Clinton — Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, Rick Perry, Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump, Bobby Jindal, Rick Santorum, George Pataki, or Jim Gilmore. Those major Romney donors also gave a little to two Democrats (other than to Hillary — who, as mentioned, received a lot of donations from these Republican donors): Martin O’Malley, Jim Web, and Lawrence Lessig. (Romney’s donors gave nothing to Bernie Sanders, and nothing to Elizabeth Warren. They don’t want either of those people to become President.)

Clinton is the only Democratic candidate who is even moderately attractive to big Republican donors.

In ascending order above Clinton, Romney’s donors were donating to: John Kasich, Scott Walker, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, and Jeb Bush. The top trio — of Bush, Cruz, and Rubio — together, received around 60% of all the money donated for the 2016 race by the people who had funded Mitt Romney’s 2012 drive for the White House.

So: the Democrat Hillary Clinton scored above 14 candidates, and below 6 candidates. She was below 6 Republican candidates, and she was above 11 Republican candidates (Lindsey Graham, Rand Paul, Carly Fiorina, Chris Christie, Rick Perry, Mike Huckabee, Donald Trump, Bobby Jindal, Rick Santorum, George Pataki, and Jim Gilmore). The 6 candidates she scored below were: Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Ben Carson, Scott Walker, and John Kasich.

This means that, in the entire 17-candidate Republican field, she drew more Republican money than did any one of 11 of the Republican candidates, but less Republican money than did any one of 6 of them. So, if she were a Republican (in what would then have been an 18-candidate Republican field for 2016), she would have been the 7th-from-the-top recipient of Romney-donor money.

Therefore, to Republican donors, Hillary Clinton is a more attractive prospect for the U.S. Presidency than was 64% of the then-current 17-member Republican field of candidates.

Another way to view this is that, to Republican donors, a President Hillary Clinton was approximately as attractive a Presidential prospect to lead the nation as was a President Graham, or a President Kasich — and was a more attractive prospective President than a President Lindsey Graham, a President Rand Paul, a President Carly Fiorina, a President Chris Christie, a President Rick Perry, a President Mike Huckabee, a President Donald Trump, a President Bobby Jindal, a President Rick Santorum, or a President George Pataki.

To judge from Clinton’s actual record of policy-decisions, and excluding any consideration of her current campaign-rhetoric (which is directed only at Democratic voters), all three of those candidates who were in Clinton’s Republican-donor league — Graham, Clinton, and Kasich — would, indeed, be quite similar, from the perceived self-interest standpoint of the major Republican donors.

As to whether any one of those three candidates as President would be substantially worse for Republican donors than would any one of the Republican big-three — Bush, Cruz, and Rubio — a person can only speculate.

However, the main difference between Clinton and the Republican candidates is certainly the rhetoric, not the reality. The reason for that Democratic rhetoric is that Ms. Clinton is competing right now only for Democratic votes, while each one of the Republican candidates is competing right now only for Republican votes.

Hillary Clinton’s rhetoric is liberal, but her actual actions in politics have been conservative, except for her nominal support for liberal initiatives that attracted even some Republican support, or else that the Senate vote-counts (at the time when she was in the Senate) indicated in-advance had no real chance of becoming passed into law. In other words: her record was one of rhetoric and pretense on a great many issues, and of meaningful action on only issues that wouldn’t embarrass her in a Democratic primary campaign, to attract Democratic voters.

In terms of her actual record in U.S. public office, it’s indistinguishable from that of Republican politicians in terms of corruption, and it’s indistinguishable from Republican politicians in terms of the policies that she carried out as the U.S. Secretary of State for four years. Her record shows her to be clearly a Republican on both matters (notwithstanding that her rhetoric has been to the exact contrary on both matters).

In a general-election contest against the Republican nominee, Clinton would move more toward the ideological center, and so also would any one of the Republican candidates, who would be nominated by Republican primaries and so running against her in the general election, to draw votes from the center as well as from the right. The rhetorical contest would be between a center-right Clinton and a slightly farther-right Republican; but, at present, the rhetorical contest is starkly different on the Democratic side than it is on the Republican side, simply because the candidates are trying right now to appeal to their own Party’s electorate (Democrats=left; Republicans=right) during the primary phase of the campaign, not addressing themselves now to the entire electorate (as during the general-election campaign).

Only in the general-election contest do all of the major candidates’ rhetoric tend more toward the center. The strategic challenge in the general election is to retain enough appeal to the given nominee’s Party-base so as to draw them to the polls on Election Day, while, at the same time, being close enough to the political center so as to attract independent voters and crossover voters from the other side.

A good example of the fudging that typically occurs during the general-election phase would be the 2012 contest itself. Both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney drew closer to the rhetorical center during the general-election matchup; but they were actually much more similar to each other than their rhetoric ever was. (After all, Obamacare is patterned upon Romneycare.) During the general-election Romney-Obama contest, Romney famously said that Russia “is without question our number one geopolitical foe, they fight for every cause for the world’s worst actors.” Then, Obama criticized that statement, by saying, “you don’t call Russia our No. 1 enemy — not Al-Qaida, Russia — unless you’re still stuck in a Cold War mind warp.” But, now, as President, Obama’s own National Security Strategy 2015 refers to Russia on 17 of the 18 occasions where it employs the term “aggression,” and he doesn’t refer even once to Saudi Arabia that way, even though the Saudi royal family (who control that country) have been the major funders of Al Qaeda, and though 15 of the 19 perpetrators on 9/11 were Saudis — none of them was Russian — and though 92% of the citizenry in the nation that the Saud family owns and whose ‘news’ media and clerics drum into those people’s heads the holiness of jihad, approve of ISIS (which the Saud family prohibit inside Saudi Arabiua even while supporting and funding the jihadists in Syria and elsewhere), and though the Sauds as the country’s leaders are using American weapons and training to bomb and starve-to-death Yemenis. Instead of calling the Saudi regime “aggressors,” we supply arms to them, and cooperate with them against their major oil-competitor, Russia. (For example, we arm the Saudi-funded jihadists that Russia is bombing in Syria, because Syria is a key potential pipeline route into Europe for Saudi oil and Qatari gas, to replace Russian oil and gas in Europe. So, we support the jihadists, even though Obama’s rhetoric opposes them — and even though Obama killed Osama bin Laden, whose Al Qaeda was funded mainly by the Saud family and their friends. Hillary Clinton is even more hawkish against Russia than is Obama. She would be even better for Republican donors than Obama has been.)

Also regarding such fudging: on 27 March 2009, President Obama in secret told the assembled chieftains of Wall Street, “My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks. … I’m protecting you.” Romney could have said the same, if he had been elected. And President Obama’s record has now made clear that he indeed has fulfilled on that promise he made secretly to them. The reality turned out to be far more like Romney, than like Obama’s campaign rhetoric had ever been. Similarly, on Obama’s trade-deals (TPP, TTIP, and TISA), he has been very much what would have been expected from Romney, though Obama in the 2008 Democratic Presidential primaries had campaigned against Hillary Clinton for her having supported and helped to pass NAFTA. Obama’s trade-deals go even beyond NAFTA, to benefit international mega-corporations, at the general public’s expense.

What Hillary’s fairly strong appeal to Romney’s financial backers shows is that the wealthy, because of their access to leaders in government, know and recognize the difference between what a candidate says in public, versus what the winning public official has said to them (in private) and actually does while serving in office. They know that she keeps her promises to them, not her promises to the electorate.

Hillary Clinton is a good investment for a billionaire — even for the 70% of them who are Republicans. And, based on those 2015 donation-figures, it seems that they would prefer a President Hillary Clinton, over a President Donald Trump. However, their three favorite candidates, in order, were: Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio. But, in a Clinton-versus-Trump contest, Hillary Clinton would likely draw more money from Republican mega-donors than Trump would, and, of course, she would draw virtually all of the money from Democratic mega-donors. In such an instance, Hillary Clinton would probably draw a larger campaign-chest (especially considering super-pacs) than any candidate for any political office in U.S. (or global) history. Hillary Clinton would almost certainly be the most-heavily-marketed political product in history, if she becomes nominated and ends up running against Trump.

There's a way to do it.... but she just can't alienate any of those sides while she's doing it.

As we inch closer to Madame President Clinton.

Its gonna to be a landslide.

Just look at the 2012 Election map where Obama won 332 to Romney 202.

This year will look similar as Dems come together and Repubs continue to splinter and distance themselves.

Btw i thought Sarah Palin's endorsement meant something. Howd did Trump lose Alaska with her backing him. They really hate Sarah like that up there?

The more establishment GOPers come out against Trump, they more galvanized his supporters will become.
It's more evidence to them that they are backing the right guy.

A Romney condemnation is about equal to an Obama condemnation

Right...Conservatives still don't get it....Trump has basically exposed the Republican party as bullshit.....It's base never cared about tax cuts, gay marriage, abortion, or any of THAT shit....They don't care if Trump is a TRUE CONSERVATIVE (whatever that means). They don't care if he gave money to Hilldawg and the Dems....

But that base DOES care about that isolationist, us-against-them, racist message that Trump is spewing...That's the true Republican message. And they hate that Trump is exposing much (not all) of their base for what they truly are....

for who? for you and yours maybe. really overlooks how hard folks are struggling out here, IMO. HAHA, couldn't get more elitist if you tried

but yeah, then to transistion to holes, gaps, or whatever the fok she was trying get to

kinda contradicts what you just said about 'murica always being great in the first place

yeah, that one shouldn't made it off the chalkboard IMO.

OF COURSE it's a reference to Trump, as it should be. Trump is her competition now. All that other shit you added is just the result of your fevered imagination.

remixing one of her campaign slogans and themes to get a their message across. it's more clever than what Clinton is attempting here, but it's the same principle.

lots of stuff catching up to them..

doing nothing in congress but obstructing....right wing ranting on the radio 24/7...Fox News, breitbart and all that other crazy stuff...

so now Donald Trump can come in...basically saying nothing..and walk away with the nomination..

the establishment probably doesn't have the power or the time to stop them...

if they try to deny Trump at the convention ..it will be a 1968 style ...only this time with friggin White supremists whoo riding for Trump...

the Right is at war with itself....

Went to cnn this morning and i see Romney calling him a phony and Ben Stein calling Trump "dangerously misinformed".

Theyre trying to pull out all the stops now but its too late.

I dont even know what a brokered convention would look like but it cant be good.

After winning all these states, Trump's ego is too big for him to tone down or try to compromise now.

They really are imploding.

This can't be good, can it? He pled the fif earlier. Does he have something to say now?

http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-clinton-idUSMTZSAPEC33FYDR8A

Immunity to State Dept staffer who set up Clinton email server

The U.S. Justice Department has given immunity from prosecution to a State Department employee who helped set up and manage the private email server Hillary Clinton used for her work as secretary of state, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

A senior U.S. law enforcement official said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had secured the cooperation of Bryan Pagliano, who worked on Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign before joining the State Department with her and setting up the server in her New York home in 2009, the newspaper reported. (wapo.st/1RqkIk2)

The Post described the investigation as a criminal inquiry, a label Clinton and her staff have resisted as they seek to reassure voters that the frontrunner to become the Democratic Party's nominee in November's presidential election is not in legal jeopardy.

Clinton has said she did nothing wrong and that she believes the U.S. government will vindicate her. She has also apologized for what she said was poor judgment.

In 2014, Clinton returned about 30,000 emails to the State Department, but said she "chose not to keep" thousands of others her staff deemed not to be work-related. Her staff have acknowledged that other work emails were not handed over, without explaining why.

More than 2,000 of Clinton's work emails contain classified information that could harm national security if exposed, according the State Department, including 22 classified as 'top secret', the highest level. The government forbids sending or storing classified emails through unsecured, non-government channels, and has prosecuted people for breaches.

Brian Fallon, a Clinton spokesman, said in a statement that Clinton's campaign was "pleased" that Pagliano was cooperating.

The Justice Department and FBI declined to comment on whether Pagliano had been granted immunity, and his lawyer did not respond to questions.

Last month, a federal judge overseeing a civil lawsuit against the State Department ruled that department officials and aides to Clinton could be questioned under oath about whether her use of a private email system was an effort to skirt open records laws.

The FBI is likely to ask Clinton and her aides in coming months how the server was set up and whether they knew they were sending classified information in emails, the Post reported.

Pagliano has declined to testify to lawmakers, citing a constitutional right against self-incrimination.

Republicans have called for Clinton's prosecution.

"This terrible error in judgment coupled with Clinton's arrogant and dishonest claims shows she can't be trusted with the presidency," Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee's chairman, said in a statement.

This is how the Republican party does things. Despite people's lack of memory, they did it to Obama too.

Remember the IRS "scandal"?

They couldn't all go in vocally on the birther shit, due to the overt racism, but they got what they needed to out of it.

Benghazi was designed to be an Obama scandal too, before it was repurposed for the Presidential race.

Nobody's even accused her of anything illegal, or of anything that wasn't done by TWO of her immediate predecessors (would have been more if email was a thing earlier). At this point all of the emails have been released, and all the ones that are supposedly classified were classified years AFTER they were sent and received.

Of course Pagliano would have plead the fifth until he had immunity. These are intricate laws that have changed over time, and he knows that a good number of people are politically motivated to put him through hell over anything that might be deemed questionable.

It's just another Clinton "scandal." A political invention, and a complete waste of time.

no emails classified at the time they were sent or received, and Pagliano had very justifiable reasons to wait for immunity before talking:

All politics....People can point to Chris Christie saying that Trump was not Presidential material; that he lacks the temperament and dignity to hold the office...

Now Christie's mammoth ass is backing Trump like he has a gun held up to his head AND Trump is accepting an endorsement from someone who once mocked him for being a joke....

Demographics in this country different homie...Plus....We are electing a PRESIDENT...Not a local mayor....We got crazy ass mayors across this country, too, Denny. Mayors that r corrupt as shit...Have legal issues; smoked crack with hookers, etc....Running locally for mayor of of an American city or in Toronto is vastly different than running for an entire country.....

Not with the Trump true believers....THEY LOVE THAT SHIT....

But u do realize that Trump is getting LESS than 40 percent of his own parties' vote, right? I'm talking about the other voters (women, blacks, Latinos, Asians, etc...) that Trump has to court in order to win a general...

If anyone should harken back to what was said around here 3 months ago it's me. Cause I'm one of 2 posters who predicted a Trump nomination. EVERYBODY else had numerous explanations for why he'd wilt away. Over and over again those explanations proved wrong. I don't like being a 'told you so' guy...but give me a break.

Rob Ford won in Toronto. 3 million people. Significantly more racially diverse than the US as a whole. Less than half of Toronto is white.

Rob Ford and Donald Trump are good friends.

Donald Trump endorsed and campaigned for Rob Ford.

Rob Ford's campaign manager has been paid as a consultant for Donald Trump.

Donald Trump has repeated Rob Ford quotes verbatim (ie 'I could shoot someone on the street and wouldn't lose any voters)

Political pundits doubted Ford could win because of the minority vote in light of his numerous racist outbursts

Rob Ford ran on an unprecedented campaign of anti-intellectualism.

Rob Ford won by a landslide. He got the majority of the black and Chinese votes despite saying the en word numerous times and likening Chinese people to dogs.

Ignore all that at your own risk.

Not compared to Toronto.

You haven't seen Trump's hand with minority voters yet. The Fords stood outside highrises in black communities and gave out $20 bills. I imagine that Trump will mirror this with some sort of very surface-level equivalent for the minority vote. I've already outlined my 4 major reasons why trump will do better with minority voters than expected in another post.

I'm not...Because Trump's message is the issue...If this was your garden variety Republican putting make-up on his party's racist base, then yeah, you would have a point....We would def. have a reason to be worried about turning out that minority vote....

But here's the problem with Trump...

Trump has BRAZNLY bashed Latinos....And played fast and loose with his KKK support...

Gonna be interesting...

Trump is getting more white voters...Some educated...Some not....some with money...some not....

But to be President u need women, Latinos and blacks, Asians...I'm going to say this for the 1 millionth time. They just started those anti-Trump ads JUST RECENTLY....When those ads start to roll out in a general public of Donald pandering to the KK and shitting on women, it will def matter beyond those non Trump STANS....

There are a lot of traditional Republicans that will not show up to vote for Trump if he is the nominee. Take that to the bank, homie...

Also, not worried about that whole high/low voter turnout thing...History proves (in primaries) it's usually not something u can depend on....

As proved by the exit polls. Despite the numerous and continuous sexist and chauvinistic things he's saying.

Race is still to be determined. But I'll bet you'll be surprised by them too.

Edit: The only poll wherein race is NOT N/A Trump won amongst non-whites decidedly.

He's doing well with hardcore republican women.....Kind of like saying you are the tallest midget (sort of like him bragging about getting the most Latinos in Nevada....There was a punchline to that too...)....

There's a certain percentage of women u have to hit in general elections....When Trump starts to beat up on Hillary Clinton and spews that sexist talk, u will see what happens.....

it's interesting b/c two months ago we hung out and he said roughly 'As much as I loathe Hillary Clinton, I would have to vote for her over Trump.'

He says he doesn't remember that now.

He's still very unlikely to vote for Trump if there are other options when the PA primary rolls around in a few weeks, but will be interesting (and maybe sad) to see what happens with him this fall.

Don't think i've gone past 10 minutes of his actual rally stuff before this romney response thing. Mostly i just peep clips of the insults. Like, some of it is entertaining, but when he starts rambling about himself, the shit is just excruciating, just in a non-political sense

I mean, i know he does.. i guess i just didn't realize it was this much. He sounds like the loud pompous lady over at the next table with the gaudy jewelry on who never shuts the fuck up.

I guess he mixes it up with humor and throwing people out, but other than that, i don't see how this schtick doesn't wear thin

How does a technically flawless rapper with incredible metaphors and verbal dexterity beat the talentless but witty and likeable opponent?

At the end of the day.....it's STILL a popularity contest.

We've seen 3 approaches thus far.....

Jeb Bush attempted the intellectual attack. Called Trump out for what he was.....shamed him for controversial and offensive statements.

Marco Rubio has resorted to trying to beat him at his own game. Name-calling and witty put-downs.

John Kasich has attempted to be 'the adult in the room'. Don't take the bait. Don't attack Trump and don't respond to the clearly offensive things he says. Let the voters see that for themselves.

Obviously, none of them have been head-to-head. But the point is that I don't think there's an alternative approach to those 3. Those are Hillary's options. I can't call which one would work better. I've read one opinion that claimed Hillary should take the John Kasich route while using Obama as the attack dog. So Obama would play the role of Jeb. But that might back-fire just like Romney back-fired.

It's a frigging enigma.

i'd argue that kasich's approach, for example, has been effective. i think it's helped him pick up thousands of supporters.

but there's so many other reasons people pick candidates and evaluate candidates that it's not enough to make a difference in this election.

He's not ready for that fight with the glass house of divorce baggage he has and the host of bankruptcies and bad business deals former partners will come out of the woodwork to blast him on. His personal file is looooooog too, and he cant win that battle.

The national electorate is far more resilient and less tolerant to his impulsive, inflammatory bs than the Repub base is.

Remember, as the nominee, the RNC has to reluctantly wave the Trump flag till Nov and you know his impulsive ass will not be controlled or listen to what they have to say. He's his own man and will stay randomly off-script.

Its going to be a fun ride.

I'm not taking bets, because I hope it doesn't come down to that

but the low voter turnout for Ds

+ the anger factor*

aren't exactly Ws for HRC

*it's hilarisad that people still don't seem to get Trump's popularity so far

it's not about policy

it's not about being a real conservative

or a true republican

people are f'n angry

HRC has enough of her own issues to continue that theme in a GE

+ as I've said before, HRC morphing into BHO 2.0 also is going to enrage some voters

base, I really think people are overlooking what could happen in a GE if those are the 2 candidates

HRC isn't inspiring anybody.

like I said, he can rinse wash and repeat the Mitt comebacks

she's a Loser

she begged me for an endorsement

I've got more money than her

etc...

I don't think anyone should take anything for granted...It's going to be a battle because Trump is a fat pig...And fat pigs LOVE to play in the mud....He's going to get Clinton dirty and take her down to his level....

But even with all this^^^^I think that minority coalition of voters will come through. Gonna be a battle. But the demographics are too heavy to ignore...

It's going to come down to 4 or 5 states like FL, OH, Col, Wisc, Minn and VA.

If we don't come out in large numbers and Trump gets a shit load of new voters out it could definitely fuck up the game.

Now that's a big if... but I think there are prolly 5 or 6 states that are in play and this is where low turnout by US could hurt Hillary

......in the general election. To put that in perspective, NO ONE (including Saint Ronnie) has ever gotten such a ridiculous total.......I'll say it again, the only thing folks should be worried about when it comes to a The Donald vs. Hilldawg matchup is Clinton's email issues...I know some folks think it's meaningless; and I will be the first to say that she will come out of that whole ideal fairly unscathed. But the FBI is the FBI...Doesn't matter if she's NOT the target...

But yeah...Trump needs a national Klan rally/sausage fest to beat Clinton in the general. That ain't happening folks...

---

Politico
Donald Trump Needs 7 of 10 White Guys
The changing face of America means he'll need a historic sweep. What are we in for now?

Excerpt: "And if, as it appears, Trump’s opponent in the general election is Hillary Clinton, his lane becomes even narrower. If things continue the way they’ve been going, just how much of the non-Hispanic white-guy vote would he need to win?

The math suggests Trump would need a whopping 70% of white men to vote for him. That’s more than Republicans have ever won before – more than the GOP won in the landslide victories of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and far more than they won even during the racially polarized elections of Barack Obama.

Of course, the argument often made by Trump’s followers is that he will win in November because he will bring so many disengaged Americans to the polls. But they’re talking about disengaged white voters, mostly mostly men— and unfortunately for him, the turnout rate for white men is already relatively high."

Another illuminating nugget...It's all about the power of the Latino voter, demonized by Trump in almost every speech....:

"The overwhelming fact about American general elections right now is that the white male voter just isn’t as powerful as he used to be. In 1980, when the electorate looked very different than it does today, Ronald Reagan cruised to an easy victory by winning 63% of white males, according to exit polls. In 1988, George H.W. Bush took 63% of that group in his rout of Michael Dukakis.

By 2004, however, winning 62% of white men barely got George W. Bush past John Kerry in a squeaker. And eight years later, Romney won 62% of white men—and lost by three and a half million votes to Barack Obama. So what happened? Between Reagan and Romney, the white male share of the total vote had dropped from 45% to 35%.

The two biggest factors: from Reagan to Romney, Hispanics’ share of the national vote soared from 2% to 10%; and women, post-feminism, jumped from casting 49% to 53% of all ballots. Winning the same percentage of white men got the party less and less. And those changes have only continued. It will get them even less this year. That’s why Trump needs to jack the number up so high."

Actually, Nate has been saying the same thing...lol

He also pointed out that Trump would need to get 67 percent or above the white male vote to win this election....

Hell, u don't need to be a math savant to do the math...If we were in 1968 or the early 70s, that number would def. be possible. Unfortunately for Trump, the demographics have changed dramatically....

Even conservative outlets.

Anti-intellectuals don't watch the news or pundits. There are black and latino anti-intellectuals too. They will see a vote for Trump as sticking it to the establishment (which they view as inherently white). I know you guys are annoyed with my Rob Ford analogies but that's what happened. Minorities voted for Ford to express their disdain for the white establishment. Sounds craxy but it happnened. I linked an article explaining it.

Republican frontrunner projected to continue victory lap in Michigan primary but he’ll likely to face a hostile audience when he arrives for Thursday’s debate

Latinos in Detroit say prospect of a Donald Trump presidency is 'scary'
Republican frontrunner projected to continue victory lap in Michigan primary but he’ll likely to face a hostile audience when he arrives for Thursday’s debate

Inside Mexicantown Bakery in south-west Detroit, one employee has launched a mini voter registration drive with employees to boost the anyone-but-Donald-Trump support.

“She’s making sure that everybody has their voter registration so they don’t vote for him,” said supervisor Ruth Gomez. “She’s kind of doing a campaign against Donald Trump.”

That sentiment is common among residents and employees in the predominantly Latino neighborhood of Detroit known as Mexicantown. And while Trump is projected to continue his political insurgency by winning the Michigan primary next week, he is likely to face a much more hostile audience when he arrives in the majority-Democrat city for the Republican debate on Thursday.

Among those in Mexicantown, his bombastic demeanor and hardline stance on immigration are increasingly common topics of conversation.

“I know a lot of people both family and friends have made jokes like: ‘Oh, we better get ready to move back home because if he gets elected that’s where we’re going,’” said Cristina Garza, whose parents were born in Mexico. “At least from the people I know … don’t take him seriously. It’s a lot of hot air.”

Garza, 26, said she tends to see herself as a Republican.

“But now, with him, it was like, oh gosh, no, those are not the ideals that I have and I initially associated with Republican views.”

At her bake shop, Gomez often talks to her customers about Trump.

“The people I’ve been talking to, that’s not who they want to choose,” she said, pointing to the “racist way he’s talking about Hispanics”.

“They just don’t want him to have the power,” she said. “They feel like if he’s in power, we’re going to be like the Muppets in front of other countries because of the way he acts” and be a national embarrassment. The sentiment exists throughout the bakery, she said.

Raquel Castañeda-López, a Detroit city council member who represents the south-west area, said the prospect of a Trump presidency is “scary” and would be “really embarrassing” for the US.

“I would say people more than ever recognize the importance to actually get out and vote,” she said. “Because of his entertaining-style tactics, people are paying more attention to the primaries maybe more than they ever did before.”

Castañeda-López, 34, is the city’s first ever Hispanic council member. She said she has never found the Trump campaign entertaining.

“I always found him very scary and really embarrassing in a way … this is a presidential candidate,” she said. “But also, disappointed with the media because he garners more coverage than anyone else.”

The billionaire real estate developer’s over-the-top plans to curb illegal immigration and harsh rhetoric has been disseminated widely and criticized heavily by Latino Americans. In recent days, two former Mexican presidents compared Trump to Adolf Hitler, saying as president he’d likely “take the US back to the old days of conflict, war and everything”. Trump has also vowed to make Mexico pay for a “big, beautiful” wall along the US border, while pledging to deport 11 million undocumented individuals. His delayed disavowal of the Ku Klux Klan over the weekend compounded the acrimony toward Trump.

“Why are choosing to give so much coverage to this individual and allowing him to spread this message of hatred and racism?” Castañeda-López said. The nation wouldn’t allow anyone else to utter similar remarks without retribution, she added, “yet he is allowed to say those things”.

“I always found it very unsettling and never entertaining that he garnered so much attention and so many people support him,” she said.

but people who care about politics shouldn't talk so much about them. people aren't their demographics, and when we generalize like this we get:

1) less interesting political debates and less creative policy

2) less participation from people because they feel like, individually, they do not count.

mitt's the perfect example. even with all this shit, he's still gonna wake up and be the same guy he was in 2012. he doesn't believe the principles are wrong. he believes this one asshole is an anomaly.

when he talks about trump's failures as a businessman, he's definitely not thinking about the fact that trump is probably about as ethical as most people in his industries. when he talks about people buying trump's ridiculous rhetoric, he ignores that trump's people were HIS people.

the scariest thing to me is the "betrayal" narrative from so many republicans supporting all these different factions in the party. no one's looking in the mirror.

the GOP is going to keep fading (as far as presidential contests are concerned... after Drumpf, there's no going back to Romney/Ryan style politics), possibly implode

the Democrats are going to go two ways:

"Blue Dogs"/lobbyists/sellouts (i.e. the "Debbie Pißerman-Scheiß/Hair by Dolezal" and 2016 Howard Dean wing) are gonna be the "new" GOP. neocons are gonna plant their flag there, too

the progressive wing of the Democratic party occupies its current spot.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

I'll almost guarantee they'll try to spin Trump losing in the general election as "He wasn't a true conservative" and that people rejected him because he acted like an asshole, not that his actual ideas and "policies" were repugnant.

That's why I'd rather it be Cruz. Let someone who's as far to the right as possible get hosed in the general, and maybe they'll realize they're just out of touch.

Okay, maybe they won't realize it, but it will continue their march to irrelevancy.

He has a worse chance than Trump on winning a general election. He's contrary to their need to expand their voter base like they realized they needed to do after 2012. The only people who do like Cruz are the limbaugh types who are convinced guys like Romney and McCain lost because they weren't conservative enough. And if anything Trump just proved that most republican voters don't give two shits about actual conservatism.

The pace is picking up by the week, advocates say, and they estimate applications could approach 1 million in 2016, about 200,000 more than the average in recent years."

More Latinos Seek Citizenship to Vote Against Trump
By JULIA PRESTONMARCH 7, 2016

A legal immigrant from Mexico, Ms. Villegas is a mother of two who has been living in the United States for nearly a decade but never felt compelled to become a citizen. But as Mr. Trump has surged toward the Republican nomination, Ms. Villegas — along with her sister, her parents and her husband’s parents — has joined a rush by many Latino immigrants to naturalize in time to vote in November.

“I want to vote so Donald Trump won’t win,” said Ms. Villegas, 32, one of several hundred legal residents, mostly Mexicans, who crowded one recent Saturday into a Denver union hall. Volunteers helped them fill out applications for citizenship, which this year are taking about five months for federal officials to approve. “He doesn’t like us,” she said.

Over all, naturalization applications increased by 11 percent in the 2015 fiscal year over the year before, and jumped 14 percent during the six months ending in January, according to federal figures. The pace is picking up by the week, advocates say, and they estimate applications could approach 1 million in 2016, about 200,000 more than the average in recent years.

While naturalizations generally rise during presidential election years, Mr. Trump provided an extra boost this year. He kicked off his campaign in June describing Mexicans as drug-traffickers and rapists. His pledge to build a border wall and make Mexico pay for it has been a regular applause line. He has vowed to create a deportation force to expel the estimated 11 million immigrants here illegally, evoking mass roundups of the 1950s.

Among 8.8 million legal residents eligible to naturalize, about 2.7 million are Mexicans, the largest national group, federal figures show. But after decades of low naturalization rates, only 36 percent of eligible Mexicans have become citizens, while 68 percent of all other immigrants have done so, according to the Pew Research Center.

“A lot of people are opening their eyes because of all the negative stuff Donald Trump has brought,” said Ms. Villegas’s husband, Miguel Garfío, 30, who was born and raised in Colorado and came to the workshop here to help his wife and other family members become citizens this year. His parents came from Mexico in the 1980s and worked hard all their lives, he said, helping him create a construction company in Denver that now employs 18 people. Contrary to Mr. Trump’s depiction, he said, none of his relatives have criminal records.

This year immigrants seeking to become citizens can find extra help from nonprofit groups and even from the White House. Last September, President Obama launched a national campaign to galvanize legal residents to take the step. They can now pay the fee, $680, with a credit card, and practice the civics test online. They can get applications at “citizenship corners” in public libraries in many states.

Last September, President Obama launched a national campaign to galvanize legal residents to take the step. They can now pay the fee, $680, with a credit card, and practice the civics test online. They can get applications at “citizenship corners” in public libraries in many states.

The White House recruited Fernando Valenzuela, the legendary Mexican-born pitcher who naturalized only last year, and José Andrés, the Spanish-American chef, to make encouraging advertisements and to turn up at swearing-in ceremonies. On Presidents’ Day, administration officials swore in more than 20,000 new citizens. On Wednesday the administration announced $10 million in grants to groups guiding immigrants through the process.

The majority of Latinos are Democrats, and some Republicans accuse the White House of leading a thinly veiled effort to expand the ranks of the president’s party. But administration officials argue the campaign is nonpartisan, noting that immigrants who become citizens improve their incomes and chances for homeownership.

“I certainly don’t care what party they register with, I just want them to become citizens,” said Leon Rodriguez, director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, the federal agency in charge of naturalizations.

Aside from Colorado, naturalization drives are taking place in Nevada and Florida, states likely to be fiercely contested in November where Latino voters could provide a crucial margin. One nonprofit group, the New Americans Campaign, plans to complete 1,500 applications at a session in Marlins Park baseball stadium in Miami on March 19.

Among the groups the White House is supporting are immigrant rights organizations and labor unions, which say their goal in holding dozens of citizenship workshops this spring is to build immigrant voting power. They want to boost support for legislation creating a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, which Mr. Obama has long promised but has never been able to push through Congress. Recently naturalized immigrants, after all the effort they must make, are more likely to vote than longtime citizens.

“People who are eligible are really feeling the urgency to get out there,” said Tara Raghuveer, deputy director of the National Partnership for New Americans, a coalition that helped put on the workshop in Denver. “They are worried by the prospect that someone who is running for president has said hateful things.”

Mr. Trump says he is confident his immigration plans will not hurt him among Latinos, because he has employed many thousands of them over the years in his hotels and other properties.

“They’re incredible people,” he said in the Republican debate in Houston on February 26. “I’m just telling you that I will do really well with Hispanics.”

But in a poll of Latino voters on Feb. 25 by the Washington Post and Univision, the Spanish language television network, 80 percent had an unfavorable view of Mr. Trump, including 72 percent with a very unfavorable view, far more than for other Republican candidates. In the poll, 74 percent of the voters said Mr. Trump’s views on immigration were “offensive.”

Mr. Trump’s campaign did not respond to emails requesting comment.

Many Mexicans have been content to live in the United States with their resident green cards. The naturalization fee is high and Mexicans often underestimate their English and worry they will fail the test, said Manuel Pastor, a sociology professor at the University of Southern California who studies citizenship. Many Mexicans have family members who are undocumented, and they think twice before engaging with the government, he said.

Yet many Mexicans joined a naturalization rush in 2007, when the threat of a fee increase right before the 2008 election prompted more than 1.3 million immigrants to apply. This year, no such increase looms. There is no hard deadline for immigrants hoping to vote in November, but with the citizenship agency currently approving naturalizations in about five months, immigrant groups are pressing to get applications in before May 1 to allow new citizens time to register to vote.

At the workshop in Denver, many aspiring voters agreed on why they are naturalizing this year.

“Donald Trump never! Never!” said Minerva Guerrero Salazar, 40, who works for a uniform rental company after moving here from Mexico in 2002. “He has no conscience when he speaks of Latinos. And he is so rude. I don’t know what kind of education his mother gave him.”

Several women said they hoped to be able to vote for Hillary Clinton, the Democratic front-runner.

At least one man liked a Republican. Dr. Oscar Argüello Rudín, 71, a Costa Rican who has been a resident since 1971 and recently retired as chief of surgery at a hospital in Colorado Springs, favored Gov. John Kasich of Ohio.

Mary Victorio, 22, a Mexican-born student at the University of Colorado, Denver, said she would vote Democrat but was grateful in one way to Mr. Trump. “He gave us that extra push we needed to get ready to vote, to prove to people who see us negatively they are wrong,” she said.

...the fossil fuel industry, Time Warner (which owns CNN), pharmaceutical companies, most of the "too-big-to-fail" banks, and prison lobbyists.

Not to mention her approval, as Secretary of State, of a 143% increase in weapons sales to Clinton Foundation donors, like Saudi Arabia, which engage in systematic human rights abuses.
