"what role does gender play in the black experience in America?"

i was thinking about who has it worse: black men or black women.

but i guess the better question would be to ask what role gender plays in the black experience in America?

ie black men have it worse in reference to law enforcement/justice system

black women have it worse in corporate America/business.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

maybe it's due to degrees and incarceration but I think there are more Black women in corporate America than Black males...

I guess a Black male could still get further than a Black woman but ionno.

to be female in general.

Plus you factor in that there are more men in blue collar fields than women.

I'm talking moreso about advancement. I think a black male will get promoted before an equally qualified female, as well as be compensated more for doing the same job.

It was widely said in Harlem and I'm sure in lot's of other places going back to the 90's if not the 60's that the way Black men were oppressed by white society was by society giving Black women lot's of status, jobs, promotion, everything over the Black man in the working world.

It was said a lot.

large they outwork Black men in America. Conspiratorial plots to destroy the Black family don't hold as much weight now, because that's pretty much already happened. I don't think any extra work needs to go into that area.

Since the 90's aren't that long ago, if there was any truth about the dynamics that were perceived "then", then "now" might not be so much.....

theres are hurdles
you make those hurdles
in my field? advertising

TRUST

being black and male is 'cool'

strangest dynamic of me passing on mad information like i do through social media and etc
besides the head nod thing of the few other black people at work i really tend to have a lot of info at my fingertips which i gladly pass on and these dudes appreciate

little do these white dudes know
a few have figured it out and looked a bit shocked but once they caught on
we've been cool

the rest?
i don't exist

so trust that patriarchy supersedes some things once you go white collar

regularly get low to moderately decent paying jobs

while many "average" Black males were given way less job opportunities.

"Above average" Black people have always been able to get jobs but maybe not promoted. The Black males esp. not promoted even if they were "above average"

Now people don't seem to say that as much as they used to.

On one hand a woman anything is going to have a considerably tougher life then a man.

On the flipside black males have been made public enemy #1 that in most stats (education, health) they are miles behind black women and even when their patriarchy should kick in, specifically with the pay gap, they are basically the same.

http://www.psmag.com/business-economics/the-equal-pay-gap-isnt-equal-across-ethnic-lines

That said, let's not act like women aren't prime prey in underdeveloped neighborhoods

then most recently

now remember hiphop is the supposedly friendly genre to black folk
how do you think black women fare if white women are getting this treatment and light skinned damn near white Amber

bc that tends to drag the convo down into 'oppression olympics' territory.

bg mentioned intersectionality, and i love that word for this issue. we experience oppression in distinct but in some places similar ways.

institutionally, society has it out for Black men more than anyone, i feel. but the amount of sexual violence that Black women endure is astonishing.

and then there is the whole ulta-patriarchal culture that has been instilled in us. the back panther doc touched a little bit on it (there was a lot more to cover though, i was speaking with a woman who was a bp in NC during the 70's, she had some horrible stories about the sexual aggression bp women faced).

i see a bright spot though, i see more younger boys acknowledging gender equality (although you wouldn't notice this from the narritive that is pushed socially).

shit is hard. we have a lot more internal work to do.
