"The best parties you've been to...monthly, one time, etc etc etc"
Wed Feb-24-16 03:44 PM by -DJ R-Tistic-

What are some that you can recall? What was it called, what city, what age were you, and what made it what it was?

And I'm talking more about parties that were promoted...not your amazing 25th birthday at the house, or your aunt's 55th BDay at the bar where fake Prince came to do Karaoke.

I notice that there's a lot of traveling parties now, which is a direct result of Social Media...so that is gonna be part of this generation's legacy. Grits & Biscuits, Trap Karaoke, Hennypalooza, Colors, Kiss & Grind, and other parties that seem to be opposite of everything that "Da Club" is about are winning the most now. Their main draw is that there's no dress code, no VIP if they even have bottle service at all, and it's not just all new mainstream music.

I saw footage of the speakers/music going out and everyone singing Al Green acapella.

Still haven't made it out to MakossaBK, but I'm planning a trip that way this summer and hopefully the dates work out. I've been a big fan of their movement for a minute and it's dope seeing the party grow.

Here's footage of MakossaBK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLei7Ta-310

greatest weekend in the history of me, bar none (nothing I could say would ever be able to capture all of the sheer magnitude of it). truly the last great freaknic (afterward it got way too big to manage reasonably in a city that was in no way ready to handle all that)

choice 2: a "new orleans house party" in houston circa 1996 (the start of a magnificent night of hopping from event to event from 8pm until about 7am the next day)

to the OP: i realize this probably wasn't what you were angling for, nevertheless it does answer the topic

5. "DJ Spinna's Prince Vs MJ and Wonderful with him and Bobbito "
In response to Reply # 0

I've had numerous amazing prince vs MJ experiences. One that stands out is the year that Q-Tip's The Renaissance came out. The party was at this spot on the Bowery, upstairs and downstairs. The music was ROCKING. All of a sudden Puff walks in with Jay Elec, Q-Tip, Ed Lover, and a bunch of cats. They hold down a section and Puff is putting up stickers with his twitter handle (this was still early for him I guess). I just remember dancing dumb hard all night and at one point I wound up in a cipher with Puff and his boys. This dude Puff was dancing for real. I was mad because Let's Get Married was playing and I wish a MJ song was on instead. My girl then (now wife) pushed me into the cipher to dance. It was a good time had by all. I also ran into Tracy Morgan that night at the bar which was around the time the Whoo Kid interview came out. It was just one of those nights.

The Wonderful experience was at the Shelter/Speed where it was so hot people would go up to the roof to catch some air. It was a spiritual experience in that place. I walked into hearing Master Blaster and that set the mood. That was the night that Stevie had his latest newborn and he called into the party to tell everyone how much he appreciated the love and support. I made a connection with another dancer on the floor and we are still cool to this day. I left that party drenched with leg cramps from dancing so much. It was all about the music and the build up that Spinna would do for songs like As. Amazing times.

It's usually around December, so it's right in the middle of holiday season, and the one party you can expect "everyone" at. The energy in the room is good and folks are there to dance and have a good time as opposed to being part of the scene.

This past Wonderfull I lost my shit when Spinna dropped this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7glQz9Oz7CM

Rich Medina chastized me at one of those parties because I got a phone call and I was on the phone while on the dance floor. He yelled at me "YOU'RE PLAYING YOURSELF!!!" I put my phone away feeling ashamed. I was only trying to help someone lol.

But yeah, that was the joint. Maybe it was called Pepper's Lounge?

Boom Boom Room was a weekly party here in Chicago held on Monday nights @ a few nightclubs. i started when it was at Red Dog, then it moved around and ended up at a Jazz club/restaurant, Green Dolphin Street (later Dolphin) b4 it was ended. b/c it was a Monday night thing the party tended to draw only folks who were dedicated to dancing...and service industry ppl on their night off. the music was strictly House - mostly Underground House. the kind of music you'd expect to hear in a legendary House party in Chicago. the crowd was mostly young folks in our 20s and 30s - an even mix of gay, str8, whatever. there was NO dress code, no door drama, a low cover charge. the DJs were local gods who regularly worked out of town too. high-profile House DJs would come through for guest appearances but we were there for the local DJs, really. i always left that joint at 4AM having sweat all the way through my clothes down to my socks. Tuesday mornings at work were ROUGH. but i was like 21 to 24 years old then so i could take it.

T-Dance is still a weekly party out in SF at The End Up. but it's not nearly as awesome as it was even 5 yrs ago. that's a common theme thrown around by older ppl about __ in SF...and it's true here. i don't blame the tech bros for ruining this party - i blame greedy owners and bottle service. anyway, T-Dance was like Boom Boom Room in that there was no dress code or door drama (long lines b/c the joint was always PACKED TO THE GILLS not b/c they were being funky about letting folks in) and a low cover charge. the crowd was eclectic as fuck - everyone was represented. the party started at like 7 or 8 AM on Sunday and went until 2 AM though it changed names to Devotion around 4PM but the vibe was mostly the same. well, the vibe and the crowd got more Black as day turned to night. and by 'Black' i mean Black and Gay, really. the later party was called 'Devotion' b/c we had CHURCH in there. it was a spiritual thing. oh, and the DJs would often play Gospel House records too to tap into that Sunday/church vibe. there was usually a tamborine being banged out ... or several. the music was intensely Underground House that just dripped w/Soul. the DJs were also local gods and big name DJs came through. i was there once when Little Louie Vega (Masters at Work) was spinning and the shit got so good to him when he played 'It's Alright I Feel It' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGSD-jKOfn8) he came out of the DJ booth and danced w/us on the floor. that's another party i regularly left w/my clothes wet.

(btw - that's the best compliment i can give about a party that i left w/my clothes dripping w/sweat b/c i danced so much and so hard b/c the music was THAT good)

Body & Soul was a weekly thing on Sundays in NYC. it's kinda like that T-Dance in SF. the vibe was more hardcore though - the dancers there were more intense than any i've seen anywhere. probably b/c many of them are professionals? i went w/my homegirl who's a professional dancer in NYC - she was courting me to join her (*pops collar*). dancing there w/them taught me a lot. i also think that crowd was very knowledgeable about the music. like they would appreciate under-rated classics that most crowds would miss. lots of clapping and tamborines and call-response...very interactive. and they appreciated the hell out of the DJs. same deal - local DJs who were gods and world-known at the same time. big name DJs and singers came through regularly but the party wasn't really about them, it was about the music and dancing. no one was there to see or be seen - we were there to dance.

fuck you.

for years it was always a great party.

between the women the parties attracted and the DJs they booked and the fact that EVERYBODY went regardless of affiliation.

those were great parties.

They rented out a museum/art gallery in a wharehouse in Stock of Bottom. It was 2 floors and had all types of rooms.

had live drum and bass downstairs with a group from Baltimore, Big in Japan plus a few local drum and bass acts.

Had a room with art students showing short films with a DJ playing break beats

upstairs they had a hip hop room hosted by Bobbito. A whole bunch of local acts from SC, Richmond, ATL and a few backpack groups from NYC.

Also had a room with dance performances, modern dance, ballet, hip hop...

Shit was epic. This was back in college at VCU. Prolly 2000 kids which was huge for a party in Richmond.

Some Asian kids came up from Tidewater, VA and were so inspired they did the same shit in Tidewater but it was even bigger. I was slightly jealous because they had radio stations and sponsors and shit.

The one in Richmond was more authentic and underground... damn I miss that energy.

rent out a pool. hire a go-go band.

and you got teenagers & people in their 20's smoking and drinking in and around the pool while a live band played.

chicks got faded & x-rated.

at some point the chant starts....TAKE IT OFF, TAKE TAKE IT OFF...

and then the bikini tops come off and it really gets live...

The sound in Cielo is amazing.
One night Josh Milan from Blaze guest spun, the joints he was playing were incredible.

Bobbito and Rich Medina used to do this strictly vinyl set on Sunday nites in a club near NYU. Killer sets and there would hardly be a crowd some nites.

Rich Medina Wednesday nite set at Apt. was always a banger

DJ Spinna's Dilla Party at Apt. was a nice pre-cursor to the Donuts party

Of course, Spinna & Bobbito's Wonder-full

In response to Reply # 0

he had 3 parties every year - MLK weekend (the Sunday b4 MLK Day), July 3rd (or the day b4 Independence Day Observed), Thanksgiving Eve.

the MLK party might've been my favorite of the 3 b/c the crowd was more about the music and dancing.

the July 3rd party was awesome b/c it fell during Black Pride Weekend so the vibe would be pretty heavily Black and Gay.

the Thanksgiving Eve party was always like a high school reunion - full of ppl who grew up here but moved away and were back in town to see folks.

but all of the parties were immensely fun. Frankie was a super-talented DJ (to say the least) and since he, you know, kinda helped create what we know as House music his parties always drew a huge crowd who were very appreciative of him and his legend and the music. the parties for the most part weren't about being seen though the T-giving Eve party was often about seeing who's there but not on some gawking shit more like 'hey, you! i haven't seen you in months/years and i KNEW you'd be here tonight!'

his charitable foundation still throws the MLK Day party b/c his birthday is around then. now they bring in other legendary DJs to celebrate Frankie and his music. this year they had a huge line up and i had a ball at that joint.

fuck you.

In response to Reply # 0

what city, what age were you, and what made it what it was?

First, let me say Yo! Son had write-ups from Spin and Rolling Stone as a Top 10 club night during it's heyday. Not that they are THEE arbiters of cool, but it WAS up there.

i stopped going in it's later years as it moved from Chop Suey, to Neumo's and then finally to The War Room. that probably had more to do with me getting older and other patrons getting younger than anything to do with the night itself. that said, it's peak was at Chop Suey. i was 25 when it started, and my and my dudes always held down the dance floor section nearest the stage and the DJs. our section was affectionately called the Designated Duns section cuz we were there not really to dance so much as to just hear good music and wile out. early in the night you'd have World Champion B-Boys Massive Monkees holding down the floor until it filled up and turned into more of a party type vibe.

i guess what made it what it THE spot was incredible dj's, a great sound system, good location, cheap booze, etc. random celebs would swing thru if they were in town, or the visiting NBA team. i danced with Gwen Stefani, talked shit to Kevin Garnett and smoked out with Snoop.

In response to Reply # 0

Primo in LA @ The Echo: I was in the Navy and drove 3 hours down the 5 to make it to this one. I knew a chica in LA from my travels prior, we had never hooked up before. Invited her to the jam and she was with it.

Primo rocked it of course. He played old and new shit, doubles, blends, the whole 9. She wasn't into Hip Hop like that, but I was losing my shit. We got tipsy, but nothing went down at the party. When it came time to go, she asked if I was hungry. I was, so she invites me to follow her to her pad in Rowland Heights.

Get there and she breaks out the Mexican food. Then more drinks. Next thing you know we're tickle wrestling on her living room floor and you know the rest.

Questlove in Miami @ Amnesia (it's Story now): This was a WMC party in 05. Crazy packed, the homie and I posted up at the bar guzzling Amstel lights. Quest was playing an original breaks set, kinda like the sample lesson mix.

I notice this tan skin Asian giving me the eye. We just lock eye contact, neither of us looking away. She was across the room and it was basically who's gonna make the first move?

I just stayed posted and so did she. Eventually she moves and I lose her for about an hour. By now I'm kicking myself, but lo and behold I catch her with her crew on the floor. I get to her faster than the flash and we start dancing grinding making out, it's in the bag.

She was a Pinay that came from bay area to party for WMC, Questlove killed his set and so did I. Took her home and we actually stayed in touch for a couple of years after that on some LD booty call steez.

What I loved about both of these parties is I had zero expectations of getting it in. I really went for the music and to hear 2 heroes spin, and they both ripped shit. It certainly beat all the countless clubs I went to trying to get it in, having to listen to the same blazin hip hop & r & b playlist all night, and came home with my dick in my hand.

The day after the Chosen Few Picnic.

Incredible shit. My first time going to Chosen Few, first time seeing Osunlade, almost got into a fight on the floor (some chic kept invading my wifes space, I saw her coming and set a pick Karl Malone would be proud of. Her man kept giving me the eye afterwards, but realized he was in the minority that night, conflict dissolved).

But partying in the open night air to Osunlade and Roy Davis Jr? Ahh man....one of the best nights of my life.

Funky Buddha (the old black diamonds ones) when it was at Space were dope

Waffles and Falafels w/ Bobbitto @ APT
Freedom when it was at small ass hot ass Star Foods

but i feel NYC was more spot oriented back then. you could go to certain spots every night of the week and not know the party or the dj but you'd know the music would be good - APT, Nell's, etc

more recent history parties include Makossa BK (i'm biased but it is a good ass party), DAF8 w/ Jazzy Jeff was sooo good. all the DJs were ridiculous and Sixth Sense remixed club bangers to Dilla beats (biased again but hey)

Everyday People is a pretty good time as is Str8t West Coastin in the summer. I love that party. It's like a mini West coast transplant reunion. #FOMOPARTY is really fun. there's one tomorrow and i'm going. The Rub is a NYC party staple.

it's a rare occurrence but the Peaches n Cream party w/ DJ Eleven and Myles is dope

in LA the root down and the art-centered art don't sleep parties were always real hype on a regular basis.

But I'd add the Freedom party in its heyday and (to date myself a bit)... Rich Medina @ APT on Wednesday nights. This was when Meatpacking actually still smelled like meat.

Timewise later than my personal clubbing peak, but this was the pinnacle of the rave clubnight for me and most of the few hundred people that packed out Electrowerkz in Islington every month.

They just got it RIGHT - the perfect balance of bleeding edge rave music (pushing sounds like breakcore, dubstep, grime, garage) with old skool nostalgia and a crowd made to feel like they were part of the lineup.

I've never met a more loyal bunch of people than that crowd. Made some life-time friends, fell in love a couple of times, I've been on fucking holiday with people I met in the smoking area. Pure love vibes every single week... the ecstasy that someone made sure was flooding the dancefloors every week probably helped a fair bit!

Specifically the Louie Vega Tambor...lawd..that was my first time seeing him play and it was everything I'd hoped it would be.

I've been to most Tambors, and the only one that I wasn't really feeling was Joe Claussel. Not a fan of the over filteration/isolation style he does.

But the Celebrate parties? Those are awesome. They start around 4pm, and end around 9pm. The parties are upstairs in an old brick building with plenty of windows in a pretty happening part of the city. You get to watch the sunset while housing your ass off. It's a pretty awesome feeling.

i got there like an hour early so i was up front but the line wasn't no joke
and it was $20
but they had two rooms goin, all good ass new music, a few throwbacks here and there
it was crowded af but it was a good time
i only went to see what one of these traveling parties was like
which is essentially just like a regular club night in hollywood with no dress code or vip and niggas smokin HELLA trees.

Everyone said it was a pretty good event overall, place hit capacity quick. Definitely skews younger. My homie prepped hella prepped hella grimey hip hop for his set but gave into the trap crowd halfway through.

like EVERYTHING was perfect. Women everywhere, music was hitting in multiple rooms. $20 cover, free food

I posted about it the weekend after and OKPs I had never met agreed it was the best party they had ever been to

that and the first or second School Daze you did, whichever one was legendary

also this party Questlove spun after a Roots concert at Central Park in 2006. Some random spot in the cut on like 10th Avenue, he was playing Midnight Marauders deep cuts and Red Bull/vodka was open bar all night
