The lyrics are basically a "u know you country when..." comedy bit over an uninspired beat and set to some really dope visuals.

Yonce does it again.... She delivers such impressive visuals and choreography that it makes forget how lame the music is.

I think that Between Drunk In Love, 7/11, and this Beyonce is making very "current" music. And I mean "current" like not timeless. With as huge ass Beyonce is for a whole generation of women and pop culture in general, I often wonder about her musical legacy. In 30 years when folks re-discover her, what will their opinion be. Will they see her music as great. And based on her newest works, I don't think they will.

I could very, very easily be wrong on this. But I kinda wish she would make more timeless music.

I wish a song with a real chorus and a verse that summed up the need to tell people about her pro-blackness. Nothing complex, just something solid. Instead we get chants and dance instructions.

I don't think it'll hold up 20 years from now.

timeless music is always embedded in the "current"

this "sound" that has been defined as trap maybe won't age well overall, but the artist who use it def will have songs ppl look back on

But to me, while I don't dislike the tracks at all, they have no depth, and feel disposable. That's what makes them "too current." If that makes sense.

I don't mind being wrong. I'm not even a Beyoncé, but given how important she is to people, I want there to a strong musical legacy. I just don't think there is.

but we couldn't see what she, and most Black women, been known, 'cause of our own sexism...

B is so unapologetically Black, and beautiful, and aesthetically powerful that her legacy is already made

and her last album, was good, period. not good for Bey, but good; bordering on great. I think she's really fine tuning what SHE musically is beyond the hit factory

and we all gotta stop pretending these videos, that she plays a heavy part in, aren't works of art. they have high aesthetic value and currency, and any teacher or college professor of the future trying to talk Black art in the 00s, would be foolish not speaking on them

I'm thinking about the people who re-discover her music in 30 years or whatever. Will the legacy of Beyoncé's music match the legacy of Beyoncé?

In response to Reply # 20

but after the 'sound' had aged, you should have the melody and lyrics of the song to fall back on. Like Peter Gabriel's "your eyes" which has overtly 80s production but is still memorable, or any new edition song from that same time.

I guess when I hear this I applaud the blackness of it, but is there enough of a structure to the song that will keep it memorable decades from now. I'm worried it wouldn't.

So far in this post you've insinuated that a song that's a hit can't be terribly written and that a catch phrase has to be funny.

And you didn't even realize that because you're too excited to stick up for this new Beyoncé song.

What I did was understand the song is a pop song while you (and some others) seem to think if something isnt written by Dylan, Springsteen, Sly, or Stevie is automatically terribly written

and you are the one who insinuated that you think a catch-phrase has to
be funny since you dont find the nas lost phrase to be funny without realizing its OKP's long lasting catch-phrase

OH! I see your strategy now..Im slow but I see it now Anon

Lol...that makes sense. Re-read the thread...I didn't say shit about it being funny or not. I said it was lame for a grown man to be using in 2016. You sir, are the one who questioned my sense of humor in regards to the comment.

So you really are this dumb huh?

Let me break it down for you...

You called me a "fuckboy piece of shit"

Then you went to The Lesson and said tough talk on the Internet is the most pathetic shit ever"

Then I called you out and you came back here to edit.

Then you proceeded to talk more shit.

Then got called out again.

And now you're resorting to giving up and just telling me I'm a joke.

Do you understand how bad of a position you're in righ now to make that claim?

HAHAHAHA

I thought "Girls (run the world)" was garbage as a piece of music,
and even that sounded better than this, imo.

As for this being some kind of social statement, it's gotta be the
most laughable excuse for one that I've ever seen.
You gonna prop this up as some Black Power anthem when she's promoting
Red Lobster and the Super Bowl? Do Black people own Red Lobster now?

Somebody please address that. Do you know who primarily runs the
seafood business?

Here's what REALLY funny: One person said that her closing "best revenge
is your paper" is about Black economics and buying Black. Smh
People infuse all kinds of meaning into her lyrics that simply isn't there.

All these people out here making ACTUAL revolution music and this is
the shit you wanna tell me is "conscious"? Man if yall don't kick rocks lol.

Jamila Woods has a song called "Blk Girl Soldier", btw.

You should sit down and read it.

Nah, you should sit YO ass down, and realize that's just another
example of somebody reading more into it than what's actually there.
I'm glad you have another piece of music that you dig.
I don't wanna step on anyone's enjoyment, but nothing you or anyone
else can say can make this joint into more than what it is.

"Looking at the tone of replies" and assuming someone's feeling or mood on the other end of the computer is the epitome of reading too much into something.

Similar to what people are doing with this song.

Thanks.

It's about what Black people do and like and are like. And yes, a love of Red Lobster is part of that. And keeping hot sauce in a purse. And having 1975 MJ nostrils.

This song is seeming more and more to me about a rejection of respectability politics.

This song, and the video, are purposefully and intentionally about aspects of common Black culture for its own sake. It's a celebration, to quote Dave/Rick.

Oh ok... celebration. Cool.
As far as that goes tho, she could have said "when he fuck me good,
I take him out for lobster" tho. Folks can't tell me it's about
"buying Black" when she's shouting out Red Lobster and promoting the
NFL at the same time. That's all I'm saying.
But cool, celebration. Good times, cmon.. etc.

about being Black and southern and inclusive of queer Black people and resisting government oppression and y'all can't take it.

But, but, but... will it stand up ten years from now?
She shouted out a corporation with unsustainable fishing practices.

And?

Some of you really mad because your favorite artist didn't make this video and worse yet, wouldn't have gotten nearly as much attention (criticism) as Beyonce did if they had made it.

100 plus replies in and most of the responses are senseless, unsubstantiated arguments about nothing.

This video AND the song will be discussed and rediscovered and enjoyed and hated for decades to come. Stay mad.

we are grappling with how Black it is in vid and lyric, and how she still rooted in capital power with the last line

not you, but others are on some this little black boy in a hoodie dancing his ass off in front of cops that shifts to a tag of "stop shooting us", means nothing; queer bodies occupying space, dancing free, next to images of sunken NO, means nothing; afros, box braids, and weaves with lyrics about a woman treating HER man for FUCKING HER right, means nothing...

so who dealing with nuance / complexity and who not.

but I wish it didn't finish with "Red lobster." She's forcefully taking subjectivity in that line, but to end it with Red Lobster is hilarious... but also kinda lame to me.

And I'm intrigued by the powerful imagery in the video (and the song itself) but juxtaposed with Beyoncé still exerting her class dominance by shouting out Givenchy and shit like that.

It's messy and complex, and I'm here for the conversation on that. I appreciate you engaging me on her musical legacy. But Meadow doesn't seem to think there's room to talk, critique, and grapple with all of the messiness in the song/vid/Bey.

Not at all. I'm enjoying THAT part of this discussion.

What I'm responding to is the male-oriented bullshit nitpicking being used to denigrate the overall powerful message of the work.

I love the hot sauce and Jackson 5 nose references but FOH.

Shit will not be discussed decades from now unless it's dumb ass Bey fans who talk about fishing practices for Red Lobster.

I ain't mad at it but shit, how the he'll are people talking about decades from now for a song that just came out?

and who really revisits Beyonce songs to break them down decades later?

This aint a What's Going On...

statements... which is exactly why I'm gonna call BS when folks
try to put that tag on something that isn't such.

Lol @ Beyonce consistently bleached head being "unapologetically Black" tho.

This reply couldn't be taken seriously beyond this.
I, for one, posted another song by an *actual* unapologetically Black
woman that is inclusive of queer (and poor) Black people and resisting
governmental oppression, so your accusation is immediately disqualified.

But let's talk about me being "mad" that lesser artists who REALLY
fight this fight don't get as much shine. "Pop" for a Black artist
has always meant appealing to white folks... always, so how is it
a plus that being a Pop star gets her more attention for a pro-Black
message? The only thing I'm "mad" about is the fact that WE still
allow white validation to dictate what's important to US. This is
how a watered down excuse for "consciousness" gets so much praise
among us. We should all be looking sideways at this crap. But
we're overlooking our real freedom fighters by letting white people
tell us who's important to us.

People bash and criticize Beyonce for everything she does. I know that most of the eagerness to bash stems from the fact that she's a light-skinned Black woman that is pro-Black.

The fact remains that you're upset and frustrated that Beyonce has a larger platform because she has appealed to white audiences in the past. That's the dominate white supremacy social structure at work and she took advantage of it.

Unfortunately, it will be the Pop star getting more attention than a lesser known artist for a pro-Black message. When has it NOT been that way?

I FEEL you. But you're too many steps ahead when most of the American public is shamefully ignorant and dumb. Beyonce used her popularity and platform to put some very social-relevant issues into the forefront where the masses could digest it. Was it dressed in capitalism and problematic race language? YES. Does that automatically qualify this as trash (as some consistently misogynistic posters in here would have you believe)? NO.

Not nitpicking at all. Wouldn't be any different
from MJ saying he loved his wide nose.
Well it's a little different, because
his change was permanent... hers is just
constant.

>People bash and criticize Beyonce for everything she does. I
>know that most of the eagerness to bash stems from the fact

Yeah I don't care that she's light.
Hell I'm light myself.

So the question is essentially "when has
white validation not driven black collective thinking?"
Hmm, probably sometime before integration
If at all. I find it highly problematic
regardless of how long it's existed though.

I like this paragraph. You might be correct
about slipping in a taste of consciousness
that the masses can digest. I kinda
waiver on whether that's the move or not,
depending on the situation and what the
message is mixed with. For instance, some
posters here say Tariq Nasheed is all bad
for doing exactly the same. However, some
of the stuff he says IS trash. Other stuff
he says is true and insightful. Nobody is
exempt from the "trash" tag when trying
to walk the line.
As for the "misogynistic" calling the song
trash, *I* called it trash, but I'm 100%
sure one can find this trash without being
misogynistic.

My family is from Virginia and Georgia, where there were never distinct cultures within Black people, so I get how such a distinction can feel uncomfortable at best. But everything I've read suggests that that was a real thing on the Gulf Coast, at least until maybe the middle of the 20th century

And almost 20+ years in the industry as a black woman.

I mean, i appreciate the song and the video as a standalone work of art, but when i take into context who made this and *when* it was made (the past two years, pro-blackness has reemerged as a huge movement. All black artists and artists who participate in black art are being taken to task for their politics now), i just feel kinda.....skeptical.

There's alot wrong with "going with the times," if thats what beyonce's doing. If thats the case, that would make her another one percenter capitalizing off black pain. Fuck that.

but If this is sincere and she was just conning america for two decades, crown her.

We have become so detached from what MLK actually thought and preached.

"The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism"

If this song is supposed to be pro-black....I think it's pretty clear that what she thinks constitutes an answer to inequality is that we need more black millionaires. Invoking MLK while espousing that kinda logic is pretty ignorant.

You can categorize every line into one of two categories:

I'm really rich

or

I have maintained my black identity.

So I suppose the message is that you don't have to lose your black identity if you get rich. Which isn't as self-contradictory as I first suggested.

Throwing MLK's image in there while saying 'I dream hard' just rubbed me the wrong way. His dream wasn't for Beyoncé to be a millionaire or for people to have a lottery-odds chance of being a black Bill Gates. I think it's pretty hard to argue that she's not making that allusion. That her accumulation of wealth is the manifestation of MLK's dream?

That hits much harder.

Needless to say I love the visuals, the song is just okay. If Kendrick hadn't come out, then the whole package would be amazing to me and she would be seen as a risk taker. But with the president's cosign of Kendrick, and the success of Kendrick's album, she seems to be riding a wave......which is not a bad thing at all. Beyonce has been in the pop light for how long? This is the Blackest I have ever seen her. Meaning, you can't perform this and have white people gleefully sing along. I hope she manages to keep it up while the social injustice continues.

Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, and countless others all have songs of social change that stir the soul and you can feel it even though you might not be of that generation. This Beyonce song doesn't and it's okay 'cause time will tell. I am just happy that a pop artist with her influence finally put out a song that makes the majority uncomfortable and encourages discussion.

"Blacker...." and "Formation" have overlapping themes where Black complex issues are brought to the forefront.

"Formation" has great imagery for discussion but it is a bland song. Doesn't move me.

"Blacker...." goes hard (....can hear and feel struggle and confusion on that song as well as throughout the whole album) and it came out first allowing for Beyonce's "refutation". Beyonce never had singles about being Black before.....and she has been in the game way over a minute. I do enjoy her "statement" video in New Orleans many years after the tragic event. Better late than never.

which is a question he's asking himself in a song that has two
other verses with 2 other respective issues addressed in each.
The letter he wrote in XXL was respectability politicky if I remember
correctly, but the song really ain't.

Nice try, tho

parodies of thought pieces.

probably b/c there's really not much to 'think' about here.

it's a nice video - it looks good. i like the way Yonce and those women make they booties pop in that parking lot. it's well-directed. the images are nice to look at.

the song is a trifle. but eh. that's Yonce. i'm not here for attempts to make any of it more than it needs to be - cute. which is what it is. cute.

fuck you.

but i know that shit is too real for too many ppl. it's too bad.

so i dunno if i applaud Yonce or want to ridicule her for her attempt to cast her blonde weaved hair as 'natural'.

she's all up in the video in formation (get in) w/('strong'/'pro-Black') ladies who are wearing their hair in afros. black afros. like, the color of their hair is black. and she's there...w/that yellow blonde weave. it's short. and rather wavy if not curly. no, wavy. wavy. yellow. blonde. juxtaposed w/all of those black-ass afros.

i mean, good for her if she'

naw. i can't get past it. i need her to address that somehow. give me a wink-wink/nudge. i need to know that she understands how that looks and how it kinda might confuse any statement she might be making. but that's if the hair in the video is supposed to make any statement. maybe she's not playing the hair politics game. if so she gets no points for having a video full of ladies w/black-ass afros while she's there stunting and primping and popping in that yellow-ass blonde weave (well, i might add...she stunt, primp and pop real good...the shit is fierce).

fuck you.

Hate on it because Mike Will Made It rachetness ain't your lane, but anything more (It's a fake message!) I have to give you a side eye.

It's a generic 'I AM A BAD BITCH SONG' with some "Pro-black" messages in it.

Which sadly wouldn't be so out of place a few musical generations ago where you had plenty of artists being pro-black and pro-pussy without getting put in a box. Kanye's been throwing random ass black empowerment lines in between his pining for titties and attention bars for his entire career. Marvin Gaye's two topics of conversation were pussy and pro-blackness. In the 90's hella MC's were throwing out strikingly pro-black 7% messages while still racking up a GTA-esque body count in those very same songs.

Like I said elsewhere, if you wanted to have your new Negro National Anthem written by Beyonce im pretty sure she could have gotten a team of songwriters along with john legend to play some touchlight chords while she's crying in an evening gown.

NOW, if she was flying around talking about she's gonna go on a Public Enemy turnaround and this is her first track, lolz. But it's not. It's just a party song with some proud to be black shit in it....like we used to do just a couple of years ago.

>What's pro-black in there?

you're missing my point. My thing is that on one side to say 'IT's PRO BLACK' is wrong, it's a generic party song.

On the other, to disparage it because she sprinkles a bit of consciousness t because she's strutting around in high heels in an arguably culturally appropriated soundscape is unfair also. She can be silly and throw in some shit to mull about (and shouldn't catch flack about it since she's perceived with not being down for the cause)

She says 'I like MY negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils'

...but SHE has neither.

The line before that one is about her responding to criticisms of Blue Ivy's hair - I figure the nose line is also about Blue Ivy. Bc Blue's nose is more negro/Jackson-5 than Yonce's.

'Black Bill Gates' is clear braggadocio. It's not pro-black its pro-Yonce as she says 'I might get your song played on the radio station cuz I slay/You just might be the black Bill Gates in the makin cuz I slay/I just might be black Bill Gates in the makin cuz I slay'. Basically the BBG thing is all connected to HER and HER power. It's braggadocio.

Her mentioning 'negro nose' brings up a distinct imagery.

Yeah, we can crack some plastic surgery jokes but the line doesn't depend on us making a direct connection to her life and that blue ivy connecting imho is a leap.

Also just because she doesn't walk that walk (blond hair, straight nose) doesn't mean that it's any less empowering. I remember reading somewhere that James Brown "Black and Proud" was a written as a cash in to the Civil right's movement...and that nigga was a conk wearing republican. Doesn't lessen the impact of the song true or not (not saying this is even close to Black and Proud btw, lol)

>'Black Bill Gates' is clear braggadocio. It's not pro-black

So...she tossed off a pro-black anthem-worthy line in a song about her trolling her haters? As opposed to the line fitting in line with every other line in the song. And I'm leaping? Lol. k.

Except it's right there. Read better. And as I said - it's connected to HER and HER power. She might get your song played on the radio bc she slays. Her doing so might make you the black Bill Gates. Bc she slays.

Again - the interpretation that keeps the line in league with the song's actual subject matter versus the one that has Yonce tossing in a random anthem-worthy thought.

i ain't mad at the song or beyonce about it at all.i like the song and much prefer Bey's up-tempo and trap-sounding songs over everything else she does.

however, i do think people are reading way too much into it (like they did with her last album)

i wish people can just enjoy it on its face. dance and sing to it, and let that be it. beyonce is not the artist to deconstruct her lyrics to find hidden messages.

i think people are reading into this song and finding it to be a "pro-black" anthem because of the video.

BORING

My girl said it was all black power and shit (she was watching the video, I was cooking) - all I heard was Beyonce showing off like she always does over production that sounds like every pop/rnb tune in 2016.

It's decent, but it's cookie cutter as fuck... I guess Beyonce's back to phoning it in.

I can't believe that there are people on here that are mad/sad/salty/ whatever at this.

I'm no Beyoncé fan..I couldn't name more than 3 songs.

But a pretty huge pop star just dropped a song/video that

celebrated her blackness

celebrated her black family

celebrated her success (as a black woman....only sensitive white folks should have a problem with this. Put it in context for Christ sake)

I mean, the entire thing is a big middle finger to racists, etc...and a challenge to her white fans to stay with her or not.

A lot of people complain about folks like Jay not using their position/celebrity...

Well she just did. "Stop Killing Us"

Some of yall spent so much time thinking about what its not you didn't stop to ponder and appreciate what it is.

She's not Chuck D, she's Beyoncé. With a legion of white a$$ fans.

And she dropped this??? Dope.

Silly me I thought Okayplayer would be giving pretty much universal props.

This place just getting too old? too white? takes everything too serious??

What the deal?

In response to Reply # 207

song = a trifle. she's bragging about herself and her family. yay for them. it's not a pro-black/black-power anthem. of any sort.

video = decent attempt at mashing together provocative images playing on hot button political issues. if the video is a statement of her politics she's on the 'right' side - she's with us. plus she looks good and she and her dancers tear it up. good stuff. i like it.

thought pieces re: song + video = doing too much. neither is nearly as deep as they're being made out by various bloggers and OKPs.

summation = i dig the video. and the song is fine for what it is. the thought pieces are too much though. they're better off as thot pieces.

fuck you.

w/independent thoughts, ideas and opinions. it's highly unlikely that all of us who post here on any given subject will have the same opinion or thought about that subject. so yes, OKP will likely never give universal __ to any thing.

so it's probably not smart to talk about 'okp' as a unit at least when dealing w/opinions.

that essentially sums up my opinion on this song, it's cool that something that is obviously built to be some kind of black empowerment song is going to get such a big stage - but I just can't with the musical execution - miss me with the singing over trap beats and the just over repetitiveness of a lot of Beyonce's music - BUT....her on a sinking cop car in Katrina...I mean I can't exactly hate on that message

#BlackLivesMatter
300 missing Nigerian girls
Chicago violence
Flint
Domestic violence
Sex trafficking of women/girls
etc. etc. etc. for the entire 8 years Obama has been in office and all of these issues have been in the media light. Now because she rocks the most cliche Black power uniform at the Superbowl, she's making a statement? Negroes please.

The video looks good. The song slaps. Other than the team calculation that went into making it, I feel absolutely nothing listening to it and watching it.

It's a shame when Lady Gaga singing the national anthem is more soulful than Beyawnce singing about Blackness.

she and Jay have both been extremely active in the black lives matter movement and have donated who knows how much money in support of it

while not VOCAL, they've been at rallys for the very people whose names you rattled off

what i like about them is that they aren't braggadocios when it comes to their philanthropy - as someone who fundraises for a living, it lets me know they are genuine in their efforts and really want to make a difference.

...u can think that Beyonce is vapid, all image or whatever....

But if a random ass fan starts to do some research about black life and suffering or the Black Panthers because of a Beyonce video and her Super Bowl performance, I have NO beef. There were two kids, no more than 15 or 16, on the train yesterday talking about those Black Lives Matter statements in that video...And they were white....

U don't have to be the most politically astute or engaged to move people into conversation....I don't care if Beyonce is as deep as a puddle. The results r what's important here....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

b/c it's kinda...appalling? i dunno. troubling at least.

maybe later this week. maybe this weekend it'll be time for some real talk about the color issues.

Broke out the patois and started banging on the table saying something about lite-skinned and blonde hair. She's particularly sensitive about that stuff though and is constantly criticizing black videos/movies/tv shows for it. She also said something about all the black touchstones being nothing different from watermelon and fried chicken. Not sure if that's fair but she was visibly angered by the video.

One other point she made which I'm still not sure if I agree with.....should we be sexualizing and titillating with those allusions to the antebellum south? And for why? She made a comparison to a jewish artist wearing a sexualized version of a concentration camp uniform and twerking in camp yard.

I suppose you could claim Beyoncé is 'reclaiming' those images....but there's another part of me that thinks it kinda exploitive as well.

seemingly as a Creole woman in the old South surrounded by darker ppl in seemingly subservient roles....b/c that was some real shit that really went down back then. and the problems borne out of that bullshit still haunt us.

so...i dunno. i think Yonce was a little too reckless w/that part. but maybe she's got an explanation for it. or maybe i misunderstand the context.

>seemingly as a Creole woman in the old South surrounded by
>darker ppl in seemingly subservient roles...

she should've put herself to the side of the video?

cause i thought she is celebrating all shades in this video
and i dont see the subservience

maybe its the creole line? i dont know
its interesting to me though, discussions of colour
cause we come in all shades- even in the darkest parts
e.g in south sudan, we got folk that are as light as beyonce
and as black as me
same as in kenya and all over east africa
and this before 'mixing' in

so its an interesting perspective
i know i did not understand the colourism when i was in the DR
i was just confused as to how they were distinguishing who was haitian and who wasnt
(with me there wasnt even any debate: they were like ya, if you were dominican, we;d straight up be hating you as haitian)

that she's surrounded by people who are darker than her. And her hair definitely stands out from the other dancers. It's like dressing the cast in black while the main performer wears white. Except the things that make Beyoncé stand out have a racial context instead of being ambiguous.

There was a semi-famous feminist thought-piece on Madonna in the 90's (Rebick? Maybe Greer....can't remember) which argued that her message of empowerment was rendered ineffective because she still had to play by the rules. She lost her baby-fat from the 80's and undertook the skinny look. If she hadn't....she couldnt' have been heard. And that undermines her message from the get-go. I think it could be argues the same thing applies here. Beyoncé is faced with a dilemna. Roughly, how can you undermine the status quo when you can't be heard without first complying with it?

and w/some of the issues to which it points - recent police brutality, police misconduct in NO in Katrina's wake.

but i wonder why it kinda falls flat on the color issue. and then the hair thing which maybe she's not playing with but i assume she is b/c there are so many hair styles present. and since she's playing w/blackness in the video and race/cultural identity (Creole/negro) she should be aware of the hair politics too. to wit...there's a shot of Yonce and the dancers in a parking lot where they all have afros and she's got that short wavy blonde weave and i wonder if she's presenting it as her version of an afro. like that blonde weave is what grows out of head. i feel like she's trying to make a fool of me there. LOL. but anyway, i dunno. i could be reading too much into all of it.

i think i'm better off just 'getting life' and 'gagging' from the fierceness and not thinking too deeply about any of it. b/c i dunno that the video can sustain deep thought/analysis. i might need to just focus on the fact that she has black ppl of many shades and she has a little boy stand up to the police and she's the queen and she's everything and taylor swift wouldn't do that and it's like rihanna who? and Yonce is that bitch b/c we're talking about it and she slay and the haters hate it and they can stay mad and all that other Beyhive buzz noise that her fans make. i might be better off w/that than trying to read the video.

i watch the video and still dont see the subservience
i see a celebration of different tones
i get that creole might be problematic
but the song also affirms her negroid-ness (which creoles would not at all/ would dissociate with the idea of being african)
so...im still mulling this.

she seems to be presenting that look as 'natural'. but maybe she's not. i dunno. i only say it b/c she's all up in the video w/other black women who are wearing seemingly 'natural' hair styles. and Yonce's own blonde weave is shorter and styled to appear less fussed-over than normal.

Some of us are out here responding from a personal place and calling it analysis. We won’t allow others to have opinions that are different than our own without coming for their necks. But we have got to be honest enough to react to "Formation" from a personal place. We need to say, “You know what? This argument ain’t about Bey. It’s about me."

I'm not sure if the Formation video is a good example of that though.

However, Bey has gotten lighter and lighter over the years.

When this ad came out: https://jayfingers.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/beyonce_lorealferiaad0001.jpg

People were mad at L'oreal NOT Beyonce for the lightening of her skin.

So, if Bey is the one in charge of her branding, then it's possible that she okay'd the decision to lighten her skin in the ad. I don't ever recall (I may have missed it) Bey coming out and denouncing that ad.

The Music Snobs had a very good discussion about how the audience continues to see Bey and Jay's as "authentic" (I can't think of a better term right now) and not "selling out" despite their close relationship with corporations.

in this 'Formation' video. b/c she's had some troubling colorism stuff going on previously. i see it. i understand that much of the impact of this video is context-dependent - like, it's 'powerful' b/c YONCE is shouting out some (fairly superficial) Black stuff in the song's lyrics (likely in response to criticisms of her blackness as seen on social media). and then in the video she's positing herself as a firmly black(-ish) woman (the whole thing is like a long Instagram post). i can dig it.

but still the video is full of dark-skinned blacks and light-skinned Yonce and Blue Ivy. several shots show Yonce or Blue Ivy all poised like a lady of the manor...w/dark skinned ppl behind her in seemingly subservient positions.

in the song lyrics.

that's a sticky subject too - as there's been debate since forever about Creole ppl acknowledging their African roots and whether there SHOULD BE any distinction between Creoles and Blacks. since, you know, Creole ppl are black anyway. that lyrical distinction coupled w/the way she's playing on colorism issues in the video has me wondering. i'm not sure what to make of it all.

and it's far more complex in the Black community ( as you'd expect) because it's more cultural than skin tone related. But there is a lot of underlying complexion related politics around being Creole in South Louisiana even within families (prob. especially within families...lol)

Edit:

creyol /Creole is in the same vein as the ol' Binlahab Black vs. black issue IMO. They're the same on the surface, but vastly different underneath

use the term Creole wrong. It's reductionist to say wrong since the source of their misguided use is undoubtedly someone from Louisiana, but it's not being used completely accurately.

you're right that whites have sometimes still do identify as creole, but you'd be hard pressed to find any white person today outside of a very small area of South Louisiana (maybe w/in a 10 mile or so radius of New Orleans) that identifies as creole. That's where my Creole/Cajun distinction came from.

So you could possibly get the answer you're seeking and then have 10 more folks lined up behind that person to tell why it's wrong.

you say anything critical about it and bey cultists lose their fucking minds.

i feel like i want to give her - as a huge star - credit for trying to do something vaguely political, i just wish i could get behind what everyone seems to be saying about this.

saying its not really as political as made out seems old fashioned and 100% haterish (never mind saying that her capitalist-narcisstic tendencies almost negate anything she might be saying in the song - that makes you sound about 80 years old, even if it is more politically consistent, though it seems being politically consistent does not = 10000s of clickbait articles) and unprogressive.

OTOH, saying its a revolutionary piece of 2016 pop music also just seems totally disproportionate, though most journalists/beyonce fans (is every journalist a beyonce fan?) seem to think it is a RALLYING CRY; a modern fight the power, change is gonna come and four women rolled in one. though it could simply be that im not a gay black man, nor a black woman, so i cant appreciate the seismic cultural significance of this?

i find it incredible that she gets such analysis from saying SO little. though thats maybe beyonces genius - she seems to know how to sprinkle little clickbait-friendly tidbits into her songs and people lose their shit over it. i cant figure out if shes just a shrewd opportunist who knows gay/black politics are on trend right now, so she alludes to those struggles, or if she does actually care about these issues, and is trying to say something about them, albeit through her limited, self-important come-worship-at-the-altar-of-queen-bey filter.

either way, the song fucking sucks. but the videos great. got to admire how it is impossible to separate the two (never mind the superbowl performance - that was fucking MASTERFUL in setting the context for the song) for most people right now. like, the song could have been bug a boo and it still would have inspired painfully earnest new york times roundtable discussions after that performance. im not sure the black panthers would have gotten behind those lyrics. but i guess all that matters is that she made that gesture, right. RIGHT?

she is a GREAT performer, and i love how they combined it with uptown funk, though bruno's band should have sounded a bit leaner, less glitzier (though obv i know its the superbowl!)

and all the contradictory, frustrating and beautiful aspects of it.

Southern blackness is so caught up in colorism, it's not even funny. Anybody who denies it is not looking.

Southern blackness is vulgar and outrageous to a fault. We are the folks who cut the fuck up and drank liquor and play cards and talk nasty and dress scandalous all night on Saturday then get up and go earnestly praise the Lord on Sunday morning. That's US.

Southern black pride is a contradiction unto itself - how can we be proud of a place that treated us so poorly and gave us so little? But we are.

Beyonce - and especially THIS piece - encapsulates all of that.

Yeah, let's talk about the frustrating aspects of it, but let's also not forget the context she comes from.

Her work will never be more than the place that created her.

The past is my foundation, not my preoccupation.

I even played it twice. Girls learned that shit fast.

Crazy, because Rihanna "Work" was the biggest song that had dropped so far this year, and this completely overshadows it...although I think "Work" will last longer, especially for mainstream/commercial type spots

274. "Toronto councillor asks if Beyoncé could be banned from Canada"
In response to Reply # 0

Article is pretty thin, but it's funny for the leaps that folks will make. Beyonce is down with the New Black Panthers now? lol

https://ca.news.yahoo.com/beyonces-halftime-performance-may-just-get-her-162933365.html

Even though it was the Denver Broncos who took the Superbowl on Sunday, it was Beyoncé who stole the show.

Due to her show-stopping performance, she may be en route to getting banned from Canada – if Toronto councillor Jim Karygiannis has anything to say about it.

The pop star is slated to play at the Rogers Centre in Toronto as a part of her Formation tour in a few months.

But Karygiannis took exception to her performance, the Toronto Sun reports. During the spot, Beyoncé gave shout-outs to the Black Panthers and Malcolm X. She also wore a bullet vest that was somewhat of a tribute to Michael Jackson’s 1993 halftime performance.

Karygiannis, who said that he wouldn’t ban her based on the halftime show alone, suggested that maybe “Immigration Minister John McCallum should have her investigated first?”

The Toronto city councillor suggested “she or could be found not eligible to enter this country,” if it’s discovered that they financially support the New Black Panthers.

“If someone wore bullets and supported here, they would not be welcomed in the United States – that’s for sure.”

But when Vice News reached out for some clarification on his comments, Karygiannis told them that he doesn’t care “whether she comes” or “doesn’t come.”

“If people are offended with what she’s wearing, is where it should be addressed,” Karygiannis said. “If you’re offended, don’t let her in.”

Beyoncé still has yet to announce a release date for her upcoming as-yet-untitled sixth studio album.
