Any recommendations? I keep hearing about how buggy the shit is. But I don't know what to do.

Any commentary about it being buggy is multiple years out of date.

If you need to trade XML files and such back and forth with other editors, you should look at Adobe Premiere Pro, which is available via subscription ($20/month).
