I have it so good that now I fear losing what I have more than I think about going up from here.

I remember in school getting bad grades and things looking bleak. And then in college being astounded that I should be asking for $40k for my first job. I'm lucky as shit.

growing up poor and struggling like i did, my initial goal was to not be poor. that was it. what did i wanna be when i grew up? NOT POOR.

and i did that.

so if that's all i'm considering, yeah...i made it.

but since climbing out of poverty, i've set other goals.

and accomplished them.

which led me to set more goals.

so i made it but i'm still making it.

i got friends that look at my financial & career status and think "isn't that cute...good for him"

and i also got friends that look at me like i'm the shit. they point to me like i'm the example, like i'm setting the bar.

so "making it" is relative...

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

to buy. Never was even a goal of mine. But it was important to my wife and here we are. I'm satisfied.

I guess the only other thing i'd want is to be able to tell my wife that she can quit her job or work part time or do something less stressful but we probably could do that now if we sacrificed some things we like lol

this is me. grew up in apartments. home ownership was foreign to me. didn't even think about it much. then it just kinda happened.

my wife didn't work for years after our first kid. we did pretty ok. not sure if I could do it now even though I make more money.

i never thought I would have gotten this far

but

I am here, still alive and actually thriving.
and I'm happy, on a deep level. For the most part my needs are completely met and my desires are pretty small...I picked up a salad spinner last night and that shit had me geeked.

At this point I want the big shit like a nice apartment or house and a car for fun.

I'm about low key stunting...understated luxury. Good shit that doesnt scream THIS IS THE GOOD SHIT

I grew up poor as shit...

we didn't own our home or a car. Went from classy to ashy when the Steel Mills closed.

my wife was worried how we would get by when she was pregnant and said she wanted to make sure our kid has more than we had.

we own our home, we are married and still madly in love... I feel like we are already ahead of the game.

but the money could still be better. Part of the problem is growing up watching poor money management and not breaking that cycle.

it's crazy because we are both college grads, she has a master's but we haven't been able to find 2 good jobs in the same city. its always 1 good job and 1 almost good job or 2 good jobs but the commute to one of them eats into the budget.

then we had 2 cars paid off. Got a nice chunk of cash and 1 car died so now we have a car payment, then the other car died so we have 2 car payments... then we found out we were having a baby.

but I'm still blessed. especially when hear other people in the struggle.

and my redit taking a hit isnt funny, but I have to laugh it off cause I don't really need to make any big purchases anytime soon and there isn't much I can do about it besides work on it until it goes back up.

to fuck up some cash flow. I've only got one note now for my wife's car, but I worried about mine as it inches closer to 200k. hopefully, I'll the resources if mine starts acting up.

for the credit, I refied my house with quicken and got loan from lending tree to kill the credit cards. had no idea that my score would go up like that. now I just gotta keep paying this loan for another couple years and I'll be really on my way.

congrats on the baby. I was in the same boat. married a year. oh a baby? shit, what is we gonna do lol. had two crappy cars. my job at the time was steady, but paid no money. she was working at a restaurant.

just had to bide my time and finally got a big break into the next gig.

(1) really putting a rock solid system of processes in place for my business. from client onboarding to project completion/wrap up. a system that isn't just in my head but on paper. one that if i decide i want to outsource some parts of my business, i can easily onboard new staff.

(2) actually selling my services. my entire business has been built on client referrals. i have never really sought out new business.

(3) picking the ideal client profile and sticking with it. not be afraid to say no to clients that you know are not going to be a good fit.

(4) making a habit of creating side projects. side projects give me the creative freedom to build something that i want and is not influenced by client decisions. they become the fuel needed when i am disgusted by how a client has completely screwed up my design lol plus more times than not side projects can grow into profitable ventures

(5) figure out an online product that is evergreen (or as close to it as possible) that generates additional income with minimal maintenance

those are just a few ... but the key for me was really figuring out what area of design i wanted to focus on....when i decided that i wanted to concentrate strictly on web stuff then i had a focus and barometer for my decisions.

edit: and yep...i am trying to get to where you are....making more money but spending less time doing it so i can explore other things

the key to happiness is not being rich;
it's doing something arduous and
creating something of value and then
being able to reflect on the fruits of your labor

that's hard to do without much selling on your own. seems like once you do start selling, it gonna take you forward pretty quick and lead to more referrals as well.

I was up for a gig at wake forest but I didn't get it. Shit woulda changed our life. Still upset about it but the one saving grace is I didn't want to move to Winston Salem.

There are a lot of new businesses in Charlotte and I need to find my niche and grind this out.

But the truth is I just made it into the bottom rung of a brand new big ass ladder that I have little idea how to steadily move up.

would the moves be for money or some other motivation?

I don't know that I want to move up right now since it would mean managing people. I could do it, but people management would take me away from doing the work that I enjoy.

I don't necessarily want to move up more. But I do want more money. And my lifestyle has sort of locked me into not leaving to do something that I speculate I would love.

leaves you feeling stuck. I wanted to be in the music business (not the creative side), but decided I couldn't do it since the money was too inconsistent. I'd love to be involved, but nope. just keep regular jobs, but eventually found something I like doing that's cool to me.

the change for me is that over the past few months i have stumbled on some folks who are modeling for me how to make that move up...which is the catalyst for where i want to go.

But I'm content, not struggling and have a lot of work to do. I'm grateful for that.
The days aren't a drag and I don't have to push my way thru. I wake up these days ready to go and excited for the most part.

I feel like I'm just getting started to be honest.

will check it out. thx.

I've always unwilling to do certs. I've gotten this far with 1 old ass cert and a marketing degree. so I've never really felt a need to certify. seems like a waste of money. my comp might foot the bill, so it couldn't hurt.

and at this point, I need to do something to keep up with my teammates.

From a financial standpoint, but would not say that I officially "made it" until I take care of some other business. As long as I continue to make strides towards self improvement, then that gives me hope that I will reach to the point of "making it".

I've made it to the mountaintop more than once. Each time I just set my sights on a new mountain. I'm doing that now.

But to answer - Careerwise am doing exactly what I set out to to do about 9 years ago. I am where I figured I'd be. However, I didn't expect I'd be on my way to LA. But here I'm is.

fuck you.
