"What are some things you assume about DJs?"

One thing that's funny (or slightly annoying) about DJing is that folks will ask me thousands of questions all the time, and it made me realize that most folks really don't know a lot about us unless they personally know a DJ.

Here's some things I've realized that some folks assume about DJs (some true, some false, some arguable):

-We already have a selected playlist of songs to play every night, with the songs already being in order and all

-We get all of our music for free if we are using a laptop

-We don't really need to use turntables because the songs are on the laptop

-We don't have to individually download songs...we can type them into "YouTube" or something similar to Google and find literally any and every song ever made

-We always get groupies when we DJ at clubs

-Clubs hire DJs based on who they feel are the best DJs

-Club goers would enjoy different (or better) music if DJs were bold enough to play certain songs in the club

What are some things that you personally assume, or even things that you used to assume? I won't judge if you think it's a "stupid" question because I'm sure I've heard worse!

Theres a couple of songs that I only play the highs and mids throughout the verses, then drop the bass back in for the hook...if the hook is powerful enough.

But a lot of times I use the EQs to seamlessly blend from one track to another. If you see a cat fiddling with EQs as soon as a song comes on, theyre either doin' too much, or nothing at all.

Bottoms up....and the devil laughs..

Exactly. I hate when ppl make demands and talk to DJ's as if they're
not a stranger and a jukebox. Make a request like u have some damn
sense and it increases your chances greatly of the song being played.
You don't know me so u may not want to make demands or go on and on
about one song when I don't have it cause u think it's so great.

On New years day, I flipped this white girl the bird as she was
leaving and still whining and raising her voice abt a song I didn't
play that she demanded lol. And the worst part was she never even
came to the booth. Just yelling requests from a far. FTB lol.

the name of the night was "The Revival" because we were there to play Rare Grooves, and just lesser heard tracks vs anything new.

Thing is, it's right off Hollywood Blvd on Cahuenga, aka Tourist central...so we would get folks who came in and didn't know the format, or didn't care. Most folks were cool, but one girl from Florida came up to me tellin me her uncle was some legend out there (and I know most Florida legends but didn't know him) and she started getting irate because I wouldn't play Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug. I nicely told her "usually, that's what I play, but that's not the format tonight" and she literally said "I don't give a FUCK about the format!!!! Nobody wants to hear this shit!" as the rest of the crowd danced.

I hadn't been that mad in a minute. I gave her the finger and waved her off. I'm mad just thinking about it....fuck her.

I almost couldn't believe it because you know Jay is getting played but she needed to hear that shit before she would even think about dancing.

later that night she was talking shit and slipped and busted her ass on some black ice on the sidewalk.

What I've seen happen a LOT now...these artists and "labels" (you know, In Da Trapp Records and their CEO Big Trapazoid) will buy bottles now, and the promoter will tell us we have to play 2-3 of their songs that night. Some of them buy bottles and they get to be on the flyer as the "host."

I was pissed at a hood spot I did two years ago...these dudes bought bottles, and I played one of their songs, but dude came up to me talkin about "you gotta play all five!" and said "we bought bottles, you BETTER play our shit!" The songs weren't even bad, but I'm not playing five unknown songs after 12, PERIOD, especially if you didn't buy me a bottle!

Supper Club (R.I.P.), Playhouse, Roxbury (R.I.P.) etc etc and even worse at trendy-hood and legit-hood spots.

It's just allllll about the money to some of them. I went to Cosmo a few months ago, and Jaccpot (Desean Jackson's company) did this shit. They bought two tables, and from 12:30-12:43, the rappers on the label just kept performing their super unknown songs. Hella unmastered.

Fridays, and they definitely do it there. Crowd is pretty mixed, but still more Black.

Game was there and had his "album release party" when the album dropped...he was drunk as SHIT, and they basically played 8 songs from his album in a row, with him telling B.A.D. "hold up, stop this one, rewind it again!!!"

The crowds at some of these spots are more about being there for the whole image and the "scene" moreso than actually partying hard, so it's different.

The main nights at most of these spots were always off nights, though...Colony was Mondays, Supper Club and Emerson on Tuesdays, Tru on Wednesdays, Roxbury, Supper, and Blok on Thursdays, Greystone Sundays.

It happens more at the trendy-hood spots for sure than the high end Black nights. But shiiiiit, these "labels" are always dope boy funded. You ever heard of YSSL? They are the ones who put Genasis out, and basically got his songs into rotation. They're an "Entertainment company" who you'll see 15 deep in bottle service at spots where the table minimum is $2,000, and they've had several of their unknown rappers songs played, in addition to Genasis' tracks.

Not making money...

LA is trying to compete with Vegas and San Diego and they dont have the bread...

all the BS aside there isnt THAT much money in LA to run most of those spots for any long period. They can barely afford mid-high level DJs that are getting 75k+ in LV or SD even with the bottle service..

I would also assume ppl getting shot doesn't help either

and I could tell it was on the way out. It didn't attract the same level of clientele, especially after the shootings and fights in 2014.

But in general, just as Double 0 said, it's really not enough money to keep these clubs running at a high level, and people in L.A. just move on to things extreeeeemely fast. People watch TV shows and see clubs, and they get here 6 months or years later asking about those same spots...we're like "that shit was dead when the show aired!!"

I don't personally believe it but I've heard the sentiment. Most of the best producers / beatmakers began as DJs and I think it only makes you better by having that 'ear'

didn't DJ until like 12 years after I was making music.

And now, I wish I had been DJing in High School, because I would have been a MUCH, much much much much better producer.

It's to the point that even legit award winning producers have consulted with me about songs they're producing, because they know that I can tell them what will work, how fast it should be, if that hi-hat should be in there or not, or if it'll sound dated in six months.

some assume that a DJ is not a musician

it gets taken for granted because Spinderalla didn't get her full due in Salt and Pepa and also Jam Master Jay in some ways got overlooked with RUN Dmc

they only listen to a certain type of music

they are reserved and anti social

some folks would be surprised or shocked at some of the early practice records used for scratching and running a tempo. a friend of mine
learned scractching by using classical chords
and jazz breakbeats and combining the two

if you can read sheet music and understanding the time and then flip a tempo to balance out changes and shifts than it can happen. i think my buddy flipped Debussy and Tony Williams as a basis and it worked.

another buddy of mine took the guitar part from diana Ross''s "Mirror,Mirror" ad used that guitar solo with Yes's "Owner of a lonely Heart" and practice of that and made it connectt for a set.

to me the process of hybriding the inter changable parts made me appreciate the deidication and drive of the art form

It can be done... but its work..

bottle service clubs and having a homey help it out for sure though.. If you do a place like marquee or even playhouse in LA.. having a homey bring some "ones" on stage.. you can definitely win..

lounge is a bit harder but not impossible if you are focused

But doesn't that make it better for you? the sneak attack?

Everytime I've djed with Eque or Nicole from Ninasky there has always been a solid line of "suitors". But these have been spots where the booth was SUPER visible. It's easier for both sexes in spots that make you a known commodity (visible dj booth) not ones that throw you in a dark corner as background music steeez

EDIT: I wish smaller spots would understand that visible dj booths make for a better time anyway..

why?

Because if that's the case, I would guess that would change the dynamic for her getting hollered at by women, which has to be a different thing than a straight lady DJ getting hollered at by men.

People act like I'm working fries at McDonald's

Also..i absolutely HATE when folks come up and ask for "something good" or "something we can dance to"

Chick came up to me and asked for "Motown..so we can dance" while I was playing shit that was on Motown

Dude came to me and tried to tell me that Pfunk was 4 on the floor and he wanted to hear some Rumba so he can dance.

Messed my night up..I was prepared for some Larry Levan set and these folks threw me off for the rest of the night.

DJs playing small-time lounges or off-nights at more popular spots to be among the most disagreeable, disgruntled dudes (only experienced this with men) you'll meet.

that you should just play whatever they want to hear. That would be very annoying. I figured that smaller lunge/clubs don't have a headcount-based fee, but I can see if you are playing an off-night at a bigger spot.

As an aside, I remember catching you at a spot in the east village near my apartment, this probably goes back 10 years, and you just laughed off any of my suggestions. I think I asked for Zhigge's 'Toss it Up' or something else obnoxious.

disgruntled are those who lost their spot, which happens every few years.

I know a few DJ's who RAN their scene (Black Hollywood) around 2007-2009...but they've been replaced, and "demoted" into doing the lesser spots that aren't as exclusive. It's not even about size, but about how elite the spot is. So these types are bitter as SHIT, and will vent literally every time I talk to them.

"something faster" yet they ask for something 20-30 BPM slower!!!!

Like...I get that in a weird way, "Antidote" has more energy than "Just friends" and Goapele "Closer" but I wish it was a better way to describe a higher energy song instead of saying "faster" because that means NOTHING to us technical heads.

that the sonic qualities aka dat bass make a HUUUUGE difference, even when songs are the same energy.

One night I was warming up early vibe, and was playing the usual early 2000's types of R&B songs. The girls were only halfway dancing, mainly the 21-25 crowd. As SOON as I switched up to the Mustard "Show me" YG "Say stop" type songs, felt like they IMMEDIATELY started dancing...and I also realized how much different they felt due to the bass hitting hard, even though they were a very similar pace and vibe.

One gig I jokingly requested a bottle of Jack Daniels in the DJ area. I got to the spot early and, lo, there was a fifth of Jack with my name on a sticky note on it at the bar area.

During my residency I got a couple of free drinks every night.

Most of my club gigs, however, didn't include free drinks... which kinda pissed me off.

Cheapest spot I played at was U Street Music Hall in DC.

Only gave me 2 drink tickets..one for me, one for my wife. That was rough. A spot I played in here in Atlanta let me/us have any domestic or house likka for free, top shelf/imports would cost. We were some Aristocrat drinkin mofo's that night.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Shoot, you on facebook? I've been known to give stuff away from time to time my man. How can people know who/what artists to support if they don't know who to look for? I get it though, we don't want the next dj playing what we got..we wanna keep the exclusives. But then we complain when the crowd only wants to hear "Follow Me" or "Perculator"...duuh! Those are the only songs they know by name! I don't do that no more...and if I post a mix with no titles, its only cause im lazy..lol

I played there every week for two years, and I know I've been guilty of doing that. But then I realized that House cant survive without the people that actually like the music knowing what the hell theyre listening too. I used to stop people (if I could) from Shazamming/Soundhounding me and just tell them the name of the song. Or...and if you are speaking of SOUL, would just let them peek over the side of the booth to see

and don't really know shit about music or have any skills.

I'm not saying I don't respect DJ's and the artform, quite the opposite.

Theres just too many people out there who buy some controller and a laptop and call themselves a DJ now.

Granted, yeah, if you're using software, you can look at your playlist and see what you played, but a lot of times, especially in House, you're gonna have to do better than "You played it after that song with the funky ass bass line, and before the song that had that weird sample in it"

Shiiit...I don't play a lot of heavily instrumental House for that very reason myself! I rename songs cause a lot of times the titles don't make sense to me.

club heads are NOT the same as music heads.

Hell, even last night, my older homegirl would complain EVERY time I played a song she didn't know, and she barely knows anything from this decade. I play Beyonce "Partition" and she says "oh I don't know this one, play something more popular" as if I was playing a B-side unreleased track.

Most club crowds are limited when it comes to what they wanna hear. DJing for an OKP crowd would be way, way way different.
