i saw Spotlight over the weekend and there was a sign on the door @ the multiplex informing guests that no backpacks or face paint or some sort of foreign objects are allowed in the facility. and i was thoroughly confused until i saw a news story that night on the tv about ppl dressing up and lining up to see Star Wars and informing them that most theaters aren't allowing elaborate costumes but will allow for some amount of costuming. i involuntarily screamed "GET THOSE NERDS" @ my tv in response.

I think theaters have been searching bags for months. Security after the Aurora Colorado shooting.
My ladyfriend and I tried to sneak some candy into the Steve Jobs movie and it felt like some kind of drug checkpoint. The kid saw the bag of peanut butter M&Ms and smiled as he handed it back.

if Lucas had went through all of this not long after Return of the Jedi I would have genuinely been interested in this shit, but I'm not. I still haven't seen episode 1-3 yet and have no real plans on doing so anytime in the future. As for this new shit... meh; maybe if I catch it on HBO at 3am while battling insomnia a few years from now.

all i know is there are millions upon millions of people who would think something's wrong with me for how i'm going to behave on Dec. 31 before and during Oklahoma's playoff game against Clemson.
i can't really explain it to them, just like some of them can't explain their desire to dress up like boba fett to watch a movie to me.
but at root our nerdisms aren't all that different, we just get our nerd on for different things. i don't like being told "it's just a bunch of guys running in to each other" by people who don't nerd out on football so i'm not gonna piss on their parade (even if i feel inclined to at times) either.

Geeking the fuck out over something is pure fun and enjoyment. I don’t feel like that with Star Wars. Most of my friends who are Star Wars geeks take pride in their geekdom and don’t mind that perception.
I think it’s when the “nerd” perception for these things turns squarely toward the stereotypical obese, basement dwelling, acne riddled middle aged virgin slob that it can get a little offensive. Other than that it’s fair game to get all Alpha Beta in the midst of such fanaticism and the nerds should really take pride in their enthusiasm.

i remember my mom took me to see Return of the Jedi 32 yrs ago. i fell asleep in the theater.
anyway, next week i'm taking her to see Rise of the Force or whatever it's called. i'm surprised she wants to go but she remembers me dragging her to see LOTR Return of the King and she loved it so now she trusts my nerd movie instincts, she says. LOL

Star Wars is high fantasy and Star Trek is hard scifi ostensibly set in the future on our current timeline.
And while I would tend to agree with you in a lot of ways, as art, the original Star Wars resonates emotionally with people in a way Star Trek does not.
Whereas ST wants people to consider their own place in the universe, SW is about taking them somewhere else.
Plus, Empire Strikes Back is the single best piece of media from both franchises combined.
