Its why I always give an eyebrow raise when people go EXTRA hard at hip-hop for its own issues when rock music can be as problematic. Just because hip-hop is still feeling the effects of its jim crow era 'cism during the golden age doesn't mean that rock gets a pass for being ahead of the curve on its current institutional 'isms.

The Smith's had hit singles, on top of critical acclaim and staying power. Plus they've birthed a bunch of bands...you would figure they would be a shoe in.

Without Janet you lose every pop scarlet who's ever popped a dance move.

and imho Chic deserves it over Cheap Trick, their influence is still felt

The Chic thing is weird as well....

But peep it....

The Hall seems to HATE black female recording artists.....

If Madonna is in, then Janet should be in (yeah, I know she didn't reach Madge's heights culturally, but we all know there r other reasons for that).....

And then there's the curious case of Tina Turner. Yes, she's in as part of Ike & Tina....But she has had vastly more success as a solo act...But she's still not in....Nuts...

No Salt & Pepa (they were female pioneers in hip-hop...They should get in on the strength of that along)....No Whitney Houston (I'm not a huge fan....But if the uber SUPER POPPY Abba are in, well then,,,,,)....Hell, white female artists get it, too....NO KATE BUSH??????

Shit is just crazy....

u kidding, right? lol...

Nile Rogers' sound (Chic's sound) is still EVERYWHERE....

I mean "Get Lucky" by itself is enough for Chic to get in given that it's a Chic rip and features Nile's songwriting and signature guitar sound (the Chic sound).....

And they r connected to the birth of hip-hop's first commercial breakthrough....They def. deserve to get in....

i was/am not moved by 'Get Lucky'.

but okay...

'Get Lucky'
'Good Times'
'I Want Your Love'
'Le Freak'
'Dance Dance Dance'

...that resume is kinda thin to me.

sure, Rodgers/Edwards produced some of Madonna's early hits.

and they worked w/Duran Duran.

and there was Power Station.

...am i missing something?

i don't see the great tragedy in the GROUP not being inducted. i'd see it more for Rodgers being inducted. but not until other actual super-producers/songwriters are also in. he's not near the top of that list for me. shit, QUINCY JONES didn't get in until 2013!!! is Tom Moulton in there? b/c i'd put him in before Rodgers. i'd put in the Salsoul folks before Rodgers.

am i missing something?

fuck you.

Yes...u answered your own question....When the Hall does it right, they don't go by a list of hits or albums...They go by influence.....

Chic's influence was omnipresent, much in the same way that Patti Smith (who really only had one classic album) is...And she and others much in the same way r in the Hall...

It doesn't matter what u think about "Get Lucky"....It's about the fact that the Chic sound is still being used by the EDM crowd....And yeah, the fact that the Chic unit produced hits for Diana Ross, David Bowie, Duran Duran, ect....And they have their own list of hits beyond the songs u named, matters...

No "Rappers Delight" without Chic.....

w/o 'Rappers Delight' some other record would've been the first to hit at mainstream. Chic got lucky there. pun intended.

i'm still not shedding tears about Chic not being inducted. if they get in that's cool but i'm not bothered that they haven't been inducted. i wouldn't vote for them over other acts i think are more deserving.

Too many to name.....

Turn on any pop 40 station right now...U will hear Chic's influence...Everyone from Daft Punk and Avici to Katy Perry have copped the Chic sound. I recall Will.i.a.am talking about Chic's inspiration when he produced Estelle's "American Boy"....Franz Ferdinand were shameless about it when they copped that Chic groove for "Take Me Out"...

It's all there....

just one current EDM record w/Chic influence then.

so...give an example. i can't think of one but i could be overlooking something.

current? EDM?

Franz Ferdinand were shameless about it when they

current? EDM?

then this should be easier, shouldn't it?

then we're on the same page. except you keep going on about all of this Chic influence on today's top 40 but keep naming examples of records from 10 yrs ago.

it doesn't seem like i'm missing much then.

Dog....lol...It's not just about CURRENCY....

It's about total influence...If u have a sound that runs the gamut from influencing everyone from the Sugar Hill Gang (70s) to Duran Duran, and Madonna (1980s) to Daft Punk (2000's) then there's no need to say PROVE IT...

The ill thing about Chic is that for the last three decades their sound has managed to pop up on everything from rap, R&B, pop, rock and EDM....I mean, it's 2015, and Nile Rogers is producing a Keith Urban album....And he's a country act....lol

They have other categories....

They will pick someone for their sidemen category (musicians who were in famous bands...I think the JB's are going to get the pick since they were nominated)...

As well, older rock and roll vets that have languished on the list.....

specific to Rock and Roll or popular American music in general? Are jazz musicians inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well? How open minded are the voters to aspects of music outside of Rock and Roll?

is that the most powerful people on the committee continue to be ones that came of age in the 1960s and view 'their music' as the peak of the art form. The problem is more that they don't like disco - it was perceived by the rock establishment as antithetical to rock during the disco peak - than that disco is a 'gay' music.

That's why B-list and lower '60s acts who've been eligible for far longer than they were actually actively producing important new music (Steve Miller this year... he's been eligible since what, 1992? Donovan, Small Faces, Laura Nyro from recent years) are still getting in while plenty of acts seen as more deserving by a wider audience are not.

Caveat: I still think the Rock Hall of Fame is pure bullshit, but I love to hate it.

if a band's in the Hall of Fame, its musical output, whether produced over a short time or the entire 25 years, should keep it a household name until it is inducted. It's the Hall of Fame. Lasting fame should be the emphasized factor - not influence, or quality. Both kids and grandparents wth any passing familiarity with popular music should have some inkling as to who the act is without needing to be educated on it.

If you don't want it to be the Hall of Fame, call it something else. The Hall of Bands that Jann Wenner and His Cronies Really Like, Plus Some Others They More or Less Begrudgingly Had To Let In.

There've been some concessions to this recently - like bowing to pressure from Dave Grohl to induct Rush (understandable to me but somewhat dubious), or from Tom Morello to induct Kiss (long overdue, and I do not like them) - but without more advocacy from people inserting themselves into the process, we're still getting plenty of excellent and influential, but not overwhelmingly and (more importantly) lastingly famous, acts: Butterfield, SRV, Linda Ronstadt, Heart, and in 2012 a single year saw the inclusion of Donovan, Laura Nyro and the Small Faces.

All great acts. All worthy of appreciation and even a special temporary exhibit in the museum (it's easy to forget that the Hall is a museum first and foremost). But inducted as permanent members of the Hall of Fame? Nah.

Eric B & Rakim have been nominated a few times I think....

I also think there will be a groundswell to at least nominate Salt N Pepa....They r basically the female counterparts to Run DMC in terms of pioneering impact...

But I think it's going to be LL Cool J....He's been nominated a shit load of times...First important act on Def Jam? He's a no brainer....

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

that garbage is to racist and narrow minded.

NWA i can see and Chicago, other than that, they will put any White turkey in to keep it mainly White.

Janet Jackson done had more impact with two hands than them turkeys combined. same with Rick James and War.

i'm glad for NWA because you can't deny the impact and spin off impact.

Chicago was cool.
