"Anyone been forced to use a Yondr at a show? Thoughts?"

Anyone worried about not getting emergency messages?

http://www.slashgear.com/chappelles-new-shows-require-phones-to-be-locked-in-yondr-sleeves-03416918/

Chappelle’s new shows require phones to be locked in Yondr sleeves

If you’re planning on attending one of Dave Chappelle’s shows in Chicago in coming days, you’ll have to lock your phone up inside a pouch from Yondr. Not familiar with Yondr? Most people aren’t until they encounter a “no phone zone,” Yondr’s speciality. The company provides venues with soft cases in which attendees must place their phone. It is then locked, and won’t be unlocked until the show is over or they leave.

Yondr’s tagline is “be here now,” but for some artists, the idea extends to cover intellectual property rights more so than notions of artistic appreciation. With a phone in every corner and a camera on nearly every phone, it doesn’t take long for photos and videos of live events to end up online. With services like Periscope, the shows — concerts, comedy routines, etc — can be streamed live for (non-paying) viewers to enjoy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chappelle has struck a partnership with Yondr to prevent the shows from being recorded and uploaded to the Internet. Yondr’s pouches are present at Chappelle’s Chicago shows this week (a total of 13); those who attend are given a pouch, which comes in three sizes, in which they must place their phone.

The pouches use some form of geofencing technology that causes them to lock when the attendee enters the no-phone zone. If use of the phone is needed, the attendee has to leave the area to get the pouch to unlock. Reportedly, those who bypass the locking process are escorted out if caught using a phone during the show.

Attendee reactions to the pouches are mixed; some have expressed frustration at being barred from using their phone during waiting periods and being unable to receive emergency messages. Many, though, have responded in a positive manner, enjoying the lack of phones interrupting the experience.

Just IMO though.

If you need to answer the phone or are concerned about checking your messages you just have to go to a designated area, it unlocks and you can call or message as needed. In an emergency I would assume you would get multiple calls or messages. Your phone blowing up, you know you need to make moves.

One had a camera embargo, one didn't. Noticed the difference when my wife was trying to watch the I dos but could because her father was stood in front of her with his arms over his head taking camera shots/video.

Sorry Dave, someone in the audience will prolly still record your shit. If not
with this, then someone with their keys on the table or in their lap will do it.

or maybe it'll be the guy with a nice looking pen in his shirt pocket

fact is, Yonder might help curb it, but there are plenty of ways around it.

I'm NOT Pro Yonder, and to re-write my shit to reflect that is some straight up hoe shit.

that's why I don't like it. It's going to be ineffective. While I don't like how people spend more time recording shit instead of enjoying the show, I see Yonder as unnecessary. Have management enforce the rules without being lazy. The first cat folks see being manhandled out the door 'cause they were recording will set the tone for the rest of the night; nobody wants to be that second one.

There's liability issues at stake also, but that's not my biggest issue with it.

Yondr was made specifically for the MPAA and RIAA to get a warm fuzzy. Dave using it ain't really the intended purpose but for him it makes sense.

Thing is, as with everything else, the industry giants are so far behind when it comes to technology it makes moves like this laughable.

A wide enough spectrum of people might be coaxed into voluntary compliance with recording rules if they're forced to go through this step. The pool of violators left over would therefore be fewer and easier to manage. Prevention is probably viewed as more effective than enforcement. I'll bet there's some social science behind this more so than the tech factor. Whether it would be effective due to the issue's you raise is debatable. Guess they have to try.

Just IMO though.

And the shit was bulky as fuck but folks still managed to get them in to take pics and record shows. I see this as being no different.

understand that they won't be able to eradicate illicit recording of their shows. i assume the hope is that w/Yondr they can LIMIT the occurrence of such recordings.

so instead of there being like 2000 such recordings at a regular show, maybe there'll only be 50 at a Yondr show.

fuck you.

I know Hannibal Buress was shook behind the death threats he got from leaked footage and Jerry Seinfeld caught hell over some shit he said during a show that was leaked, but really how much footage is even making it to social media?

I know I'm probably out of the loop here 'cause when I search youtube for footage clearly shot in a club by a non-professional I don't see it.

of their shows.

the real action is probably on any of the several other video-hosting sites all over the world other than YT.

for example, Prince has asked/demanded that YT remove videos of his shows and songs and so it's pretty difficult to find his stuff on YT. but i tend to find it hosted on other sites - most of them seem to be based in foreign countries.

fuck you.

Not so much as encouraging voluntary compliance via an act that reinforces desired behaviour at a psychological level.
