"Why are yuppies/entitled folks always in the way?"
Mon Nov-16-15 10:41 AM by double negative

T. Coates talked about this in his book, the yuppies blocking major street sections with strollers while at brunch.

I went on a three borough bike ride this weekend and decided to loop through Williamsburg and as soon as I got to that hood I nearly ran over three people (i had the light and in each instance the person would walk in the intersection full clip without even looking both ways, I was on the road bike so I was mashing). Everywhere else in NYC people walk around head on a swivel/as if the world exists, but, in w-burg the people walk around as if the world will bend to them.

In my hood there is a mix of long term residents and newly arrived yuppies and I find the yuppies to consistently be in the way. They will block the fuck out of a street and wont even bat an eye over the fact that all sidewalk traffic has to go around them

Wasnt there a poster talking about going to whole foods and how the people there would just not move?

The fuck is this shit? Its aggressively passive aggressive. Where did this fuckery come from? This is some new shit.

They want you to treat them with the respect afforded to automobiles but then don't follow any of the rules that automobiles have to follow.

I am just waiting for a cyclist to run a red light and hit me or mine so I can a good excuse to pummel one of them.

To keep it short: It's safer if bicycle, scooter and motorcycle riders keep moving and cut through traffic. Car drivers don't pay attention, have shit like phones or stereos they are playing with and will LIE if they hit you. There are no minor "fender benders" on bikes because we don't have any. Sitting in CAR traffic on a bike is called being a sitting duck.

sure, you pay attention to the jerks who are in your way and run lights and make you upset

but

the thing is, a big part of effective riding is staying out of the way.

that death is hanging around at every turn so its understandable that come cyclists might come off as high strung.

at the same time I'm also deeply upset by the way a lot of cyclists act. Tons of folks do not wear helmets. Tons of folks ride with headphones on just completely unaware of the world around them. Tons of folks want to play bike messenger and blow through lights and people because it looks cool. Tons of delivery guys riding like assholes.

I get it, but....

I cant remember the saying but its something like "if you dont notice it then they are doing their job correctly"

really the problem with your argument is that its attacking a small part of the equation. infrastructure is the real issue at hand. Roads were primarily designed for cars where as cars and bikes use the road differently. There have been a ton of gains by DOT to rethink the way roads are designed and the efforts are helping a ton.

By the way, its rude to shit on all cyclists because of a few bad apples

Pedestrians, bike riders, rollerbladers, scooter riders, etc. aren't rolling down the street in 2,800lbs metal boxes at high speeds, and (other than pedestrians) aren't usually on their phones, changing radio stations or looking at the person next to them while talking.

There *are* quite a bit of bad bicyclists in particular, but nowhere close to the number of bad drivers. It's just crazy to me that there are 9,000 gun-related deaths in the US every year and people get hysterical on some "SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE!" steez, but there are 30,000 deaths from fatal automobile accidents every year in the US and people still keep playing with their phones.

I purposely walk down the very middle of the sidewalk and make these folks split up and walk around me. If they choose not to move, they are getting bumped. The yuppie men usually jump out of the way at the last minute (because I'm a big dude and they know what the possible outcomes are). It's the young women that try to play chicken. It's always interesting when they get a solid bump then apologize for not getting out of the way. Note: They all try to pretend like they don't see me, which is some passive-aggressive-passive-aggressiveness. They know damned-well they see this giant black man walking towards them.

Old people and people with kids or something heavy in their arms are the only ones that get exceptions.

Is probably the worst. People generally have no awareness when they're in others' way.

Which is bizarre because surely it happens to them at least some of the time.

Which you would think would garner an appreciation for the value of not being in someone's way.

I suspect they're the same people who don't use turn signals, just on foot.

i still blame hip-hop.
