"Would you fight a homeless shelter being put up on your block?"
Wed Nov-11-15 05:23 PM by Buddy_Gilapagos

We heard that a government building on my block in BK is being converted into a homeless shelter and someone emailed the block emailing list if they heard anything about it.

Yo these folks were tripping over themselves to say how they would welcome such an addition to our neighborhood.

Meanwhile they are raving mad about the new Barclay's center housing developments in the very same email.

I kind of want to call them on their bullshit but maybe it's me.

I can see the messed up gentrification politics if I moved to a block with a shelter and raised hell to get it closed but am I fcuked up for NOT wanting a shelter on my block?

Is there a way to not sound like an Asshole and say maybe it won't be a great thing to have on the block?

The funny thing is that the only people to raise concern on the email list are the black and brown people and the white folks are going all out to say how much they approve it (to be fair, one dude on the block is a homeless law advocate but yeah).

i'd rather see it as permanent supportive housing

and i won't even front like i don't dislike passing by the shelter over on bedford. it can be a little scary for EVERYONE. including the folks who use that shelter

shelters are fucking bullshit.

even though it's been proven cheaper and more effective than the shelter system AND has been shown to improve property values in neighborhoods

the block has been getting whiter as the brown renters are being replaced with white more affluent renters.

But homeless shelter though?

Maybe I shouldn't have read that piece about 125th and lexington or seen the trailer for Field Nigger.

it's absolutely bullshit
there's no reason why it can't be permanent and supportive
it's so much less money in the long run and there are enough experienced developers and service agencies

shelters are a cop out and are dangerous for everyone

morning sometimes and there's always fools out there arguing or yelling or just chilling in the street. smh

I hate getting caught at that light.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

There are already a couple like 6-8 blocks away and my block doesn't even have sidewalks or anything so adding a bunch of foot traffic would be a mess.

i still blame hip-hop.

This is the shit I hate (b/c it challenges my own tightly-held beliefs).

The honest answer -- there's no way I would want a homeless shelter on my block.

But I kinda hate myself a little for feeling that way.

Ugh.

Yep, it can be real hard to hang onto political and social ideals while trying to ensure you or your family’s personal safety.

And wait until you have to put a kid in school.

Then things get real problematic in weighing one’s ideals vs reality.

Not one of the progressive boho parents (ourselves included) in my neighborhood even thought about putting their kid in the local PS grade school.

For what it’s worth, we live near the shelter at the armory at Bedford/Marcus Garvey and we were told by a rep from the 81st precinct (a black woman in one of those “Off the record, I’ll be real with y’all moments) that a big percentage the crime in our area was committed by men from the shelter or folks from the nearby public housing units.

Maybe they'd move indoors. What exactly are you afraid of?

I wouldn't care. I walk out my back door and into my car. My neighborhood is small apartment buildings and small mansions mostly. Some of those mansions are single family homes, some are a little shabby, some have million dollar renovations, some are frat houses, some are international student housing, some halfway houses. I don't know which ones are halfway / supportive houses. I've just heard about it on the news. But, it's a mix and it's fine.

and there are already homelesss people. they don't bother anyone.

it's guys who stand who on the corner who catcall and harrass.

if i see them out (not the norm), i just dont walk that way.

i saw my landlord stop and chat up a homeless guy pushing a shopping cart for 5 minutes and shake his hand.

i'm not going that far. but, our homelesss people are ALRIGHT.

they ain't the problem.

which gave the impression to I avoid striking past those places...

and you also said "neighborhood"

I think Buddy said on the same block in BK. That's way different IMO.

and homeless people on the street is different than a homeless shelter.

I see homeless people all the time in Charlotte and they don't bother me... but if I walked out my house and saw a line of 40 waiting for a shelter to open when there are only 20 open beds? nah

i've said before i don't let homeless men get within arms length of me.

mostly the homeless here like to panhandle at the lights before you get on and off the interstate and sometimes i will give the women money or food if i have any, never the men.

which ya'll find scandalous. but that's how i do.

i grew up in (in part) in the 80s bronx and can co-exist quite alright with homeless, crackheads and the poor.

There's a charity that started subsidizing housing in my building recently. 'Angels of Something rather'. More mental illness and drugs. I finally confronted the paranoid screaming every night in the hallway. He cowered quick but I'm not sure if it's because I was carrying a baseball bat or if he was genuinely intimidated by me. It takes all types.

>Is there a way to not sound like an Asshole and say maybe it
>won't be a great thing to have on the block?

no.

i lived on a block w/a homeless shelter (it was at the end of the block) and never had a problem w/them. there was drama but somehow it never came down the block toward my building. so that colors my answer. plus it's too easy to get all 'not in my backyard' w/this issue...well it's gotta go in someone's backyard.

and i agree w/Tara that shelters aren't the best solution to the problem of homelessness and aren't a solution at all, really. but they're needed as too many ppl find themselves in need of emergency shelter NOW and can't wait on a long-term solution that'll involve bureaucracy and applications and approvals and all that jazz. some folks need a place to sleep TONIGHT. NOW. shelters are for them. some of those folks will be in crisis due to a drug problem or a mental health problem or a combination. some of them will be loud and stinky. they will bring drama. it's possible for the folks running the shelter to do so in a manner that will minimize the negative impact on the block on which the shelter exists. i've seen that. but i've also seen the opposite. so i understand the concern. still, yeah...opposing the shelter is going to make you seem like an asshole. either get over that and oppose on or don't oppose.

fuck you.

Limit your objections to specific concerns with the plan for THIS particular shelter as opposed to generalized objections about shelters rooted in stereotypes about shelters or the ppl who use them and/or operate them. You want to avoid opposing ppl - oppose the plan.

fuck you.

homeless people around my block? I mean are people going to sleep on my street like they currently do (did I tell my cleaning up human shit story?) when there is a shelter right there? Is that possibly a thing?

Do they have other shelters that they run? What's their track record like?

There's a shelter in downtown Atlanta that is run TERRIBLY...scores people outside all day long, open air drug dealing, hookers, you name it...they even had a damn tuberculosis outbreak on that block a couple years ago. It's definitely holding the area back in a number of ways and they can't seem to get it shut down.

But maybe less than 5 minutes away is another shelter ran by a church that is quiet and well structured and you'd never know it was there unless someone told you.

Resources for the homeless (especially regarding physical and mental wellness) are important and they have to go somewhere. I'd just need the full scope of who/what is involved before I bless it or break out the pitchforks.

Streets won't let me chill.

i mean, just say it. seriously.
trying not to sound like an asshole
means that ppl think they are not assholes as long as they phrase it right.

and then they act offended if you spell out what they said.

just... say it.
then we can have a conversation about what will and will not be done.

we can negotiate.

all this, "let me phrase it gently"
shit just makes it harder to get down to brass tacks.

then again, social cues don't make intuitive sense to me.
i feel like dancing around shit is
a waste of everybody's time.

but most ppl view social interactions differently.

anyway. Just oppose it if you want to.

i doubt you will be alone.

we already have a lot of homeless folk living in a camp less than a mile from me and under bridges nearby, but they don't bother me at all...

I've been working with homeless folk off and on for about a year now, and I'd be leary just because I've noticed how they just hang out outside the shelters after they close and I really wouldn't be cool with them just sitting around outside my house as I pull off and go to work each day....

I think shelters work as a temporary solution... I did just hear yesterday about how some people tried to fight a shelter being built across the street from a church, but the shelter people went over the zoning board's head and got it done anyway, or was it the city council's head...I forget....

I eventually will. I just want more information of what's going on.

The worst part to me is having these folks 'splaining why shelters are needed. I know that....and I still dont want it on my block.

that of course, is one part of the problem.
we all know, on some level, that homeless ppl have to go somewhere.

but nobody wants to see them.

but that is the conversation to be had. "i don't want them here."
there is no other way to say that.

obviously, you aren't saying the homeless exterminated.
you just want them someplace else.

there is no way to say you want them somewhere else
without saying you want them somewhere else.

the fact that they need to go somewhere won't go away.
that rebuttal will always come. because the fact is, they do.

you just have to say you don't want them in your backyard.

and oppose the plan for THIS shelter for specific reasons related to the details of the plan as opposed to opposing the idea of homeless ppl being housed temporarily on your block.

oppose the plan and not the ppl.

even if your actual opposition is to the ppl - if you want to minimize the assholishness then oppose the plan and not the ppl.

IMO.

like the mainstream idea is blacks are poor and terrible neighbors. while they may still believe this, the liberal thing to do is to welcome the idea of having blacks in the neighborhood and see how it goes. they've met you and lived around you and survived so now they're bolstered in their beliefs that they can live around diversity.

basically they may not be crazy about having people like you around or homeless people. they know the stereotypes. but, they welcome OTHER like you and like homeless people as a liberal and they will see how it goes. guess i'm saying your neighbors could be worse.
