"hey, MLB: enough w/'God Bless America' in the 7th-inning stretch."

stop it.

the shit happened like 14 yrs ago. we ain't forgot but singing that damned song during playoff baseball games sure makes me wish the shit had never happened so i wouldn't have to hear that god-forsaken song in the middle of a baseball game.

at this point the singing of the song feels like so much jingoism. i just don't need it. of course, in the wake of the thing happening we all wore red white and blue and waved flags and got all rah-rah 'MURRICA and that was cute. and we'd dropped that shit w/in 6 months of the happening. we used that stuff when we needed it and we largely moved on. not that we forgot but damn - we couldn't sit shiva forever, you know? but then every October i'm confronted w/it all over again during the 7th inning of baseball games. i don't need it. i dig America as much or more than the next guy and i prefer to express my feelings about America in ways other than singing that awful, awful song. hell, just going to a baseball game is enough, isn't it? we do the fucking pledge of allegiance or whatever before the game where we all stand up and take off hats and all that jazz. whatever...that's more than enough.

stop it w/the god damned song.

fuck you.

singing of the national anthem is still necessary.

The only time its done is at assemblies and sporting events, and no one hardly stands up or says the words. Lets just skip over it and get to the game!

Specifically, he said that he found it weird that school would be stopped (during homeroom) and everyone (kids and adults) would have to chant this pledge of allegiance, every day. Said it seemed like some mind control propaganda. He also said the same about the national anthem and saluting the flag. The really weird part to him was that do all this in the US, which is pretty far from most other big countries. This was years ago that he said this (not sure if they still say the pledge in school).

As a basketball fan, I've never seen such aloofness at a sporting event. The bar downstairs (Citizens Bank Park) was PACKED and no one there was watching the game. Plus, you can get some nice shots of the city from the upper levels.

I'm not saying scrap the idea of a National Anthem altogether because most every country has one but for shit's sake if we're picking a song that instills pride in country and is supposedly for everyone maybe we shouldn't pick one that requires a seventeen octave range to sing properly?

like 45% of pre-event Star Spangled Banners SUCK and not because the singer sucks it's because the song is just too goddam hard.

Give me something I can sing along to full voice and not have to try to decide when do give up on singing the right octave. give me America the Beautiful.

i still blame hip-hop.

but i digress - i'd be fine w/replacing GBA w/ATB in the 7th inning. although that's STILL putting too much on it it's not as off-putting as GBA.

and i agree - we can cut singing the anthem before domestic sporting events. i'm okay w/cutting that and replacing it w/ATB if we just have to have some moment of jingoist reflection before we start a sporting event.

Incidentally I also hate the dumb fucking songs that seem to be tradition at certain places such as "Sweet Caroline" and "Cotton Eyed Joe," both of which take me from elated to suicidal in seconds flat.

Overall the in-arena presentation at stadiums is horrible. I often wonder what hell it must be to be a season-ticket holder. Yes, at one point I was going to every single home game for a couple different teams but I was working so I could tune it out. If I had to hear the same songs and see the same bits every. fucking. night. AND I was paying money for it, I would go nuts. Minor league teams are more creative than the pros.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

One song is enough. I would feel different if these douches could show a modicum of taste, but up until now, nothing. Sweet Caroline is like an ode to whiteness, I am surprised some team doesn't come with Jimmy Buffet or the Eagles to counter it. That Cotton Eye Joe song is like mass aural rape. Do they still play that shit at Yankees games? I hope not.

I am also sometimes mildly offended by the music at stadiums. At the Honda Center they often play that weird rapey Stone Temple Pilots song before faceoffs. Why?

Well, the 7th inning stretch started amidst all of that and when they started playing 'Take me out' the whole crowd started booing to drown out the song. lol. It's like they were mad at the sport.

On August 26, 2008, a fan at a Boston Red Sox game at Yankee Stadium, who had attempted to leave for the restroom during the playing of the song, was restrained and ejected by NYPD officers. As part of the settlement of a subsequent lawsuit, the New York Yankees announced that they would no longer restrict the movement of fans during the playing of the song.

and

On September 15, 2009, three high school teens filed a lawsuit against New Jersey's minor league Newark Bears for being ejected from Eagles Riverfront Stadium over their refusal to stand during the playing of "God Bless America" on June 29, 2009. Before being ejected, they were asked to leave the stadium by Bears president and co-owner Thomas Cetnar.
