"You know whats THEE WORST? Not liking hip hop. "
Thu Oct-15-15 02:23 PM by double negative

I know I sound like a broken record for this but TPAB really killed hip hop in 2015 for me. like: https://youtu.be/WcSXbvzW91U?t=43s

I feel like Louis CK when he talked about watching Girls Gone Wild and getting upset that the young women featured were acting carefree despite the fact that there were several wars and recession happening.

Maybe its a shifting perspective but I really do feel like everything that can be talked about has been talked about and the only people who really feel new hip hop are people who havent lived enough yet....everything seems new because it is new to some people.

Im not saying there isnt good shit out there. There is. I'm up on it, I just tend to tune the fuck out though.

I dont care about the haters. I'm tried of talking about the plight of black people. Fuck whips and chains. I don't care about flaunting signifiers of wealth. Who gives a shit about the drug game. I'm not in the club. I'm not depressed enough for Earl Sweatshirt. The concept of Drake confuses me. Backpacker shit has sounded the same for 20 years. The arrogant playboy schtick is played. Im not about killing blacks so gun play comes off retarded (looking at you Schmurda). The concept of Rick Ross make no sense anymore.

Feel me? Groundhog day shit for real.

Where the fuck is DOOM?

Hip Hop is not a music "for the kids" it was created by people who happened to be teenagers. After a while these teens grow up. The music should have grown up with them. When I was like 8-9 I had the Sugarhill Gang, Funky Four plus One More and them, but also Grandmaster Melle Mel grew me up cause he was talking about stuff my uncles and them were going through.

No one speaks to the adult hip hopper. No one talks about our issues, the political scene, raising kids etc. there is plenty of material and the subject matter can be equally catchy etc. No one has done this yet. And the inustry wants it to stay popcorny and bubbly gum for instant profit. They don't care if Hi-p Hop fades, but I do.

Hip Hop is older han 30 and honestly, should represent it instead of hiding from it. JMO.

a whole lot of press, and its few and somewhat far between. sadat, large pro, common etc make grown up hiphop still. I still bang q-tips last jawnt and he will be dropping again before too long. the frequency of the releases isnt super prolific but it does exist. I feel your pain tho. I mostly listen to oldschool shit myself simply because that's what appeals to me the most

before.

Half the time it's by some artist I never got into or had never heard of, and it's HITTING. I'm jamming. Then I find out it's from 1989 or 92 or 94. That's when I realize that I'm not crazy - the music from then was better because it almost always catches my ear, eve when I'm not paying close attention. But that's an outlook that has fallen out of fashion. The current popular notion is that music quality is consistent across eras and that it's just us who get old and change. Bah.

but cats like metro boomin are making some of the illest hip-hop production I've heard in a long time, so that keeps me interested.

Plus I live on the west coast and the west is ON right now, so I'd feel pretty washed if I were out of touch with current rap right now. TDE got another dope project with that Jay Rock and I wanna see what Ab-Soul drops next.

you in NY, correct? NY is still dry and it's a wrap for ya boy schmurda so i can understand not feeling the current climate lol

Blues, jazz, disco, funk, soul.

Ignoring lyrics for a minute.....modern hip hop really doesn't have those elements anymore. I feel like before 2000 (give or take), hip hop was the logical extension of the black American music continuum. It was all those aforementioned elements but applied through new technology and new instruments (turntables/drum machines/samplers).

I can dig other types of music....but those 5 listed above are my out-and-out favorites. Whatever new music I'm passionate about is gonna have to be connected to them in some way. Modern hip hop mostly isn't.

I'm not in that low place right now, or when it dropped. but there was something about the -sound- of that album that I was so happy to hear in 2015.

I don't hold my tongue when I say a lot of 1997-2007 mainstream hip-hop licked BALLS

the shit that some of "us" started propping up in the Y2K years alongside The Roots (or instead of)?

the populist rap like No Limit... Jesus Christ.
the Neptunes... FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SACRED
50 Cent being heralded... FUCK THIS!!!
when trap became the new "boom bap" (at least better rappers are on those beats, and better sounds are in those beats now)
I'll take 2015 rap ALL day over the turn-of-the-century shit.
the 00s was the WORST period for hip-hop ever.
the youngins are making good shit. and something new is coming out everyday that catches my ear.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.
