All great shows. I'm typically the only person in the room who loves MASH. I laugh EVER ep unless it's a serious one. And if I see that clock in the lower corner of the screen I get mad hyped.

Cheers, ranking for popularity, longevity, etc, was probably a top 10 show of all time. For me personally it would be top 50 at least.

I didn't watch much tv when Roseanne aired but I saw all the reruns in syndication and that was a great frigging show. Also much smarter and compassionate than Cheers. In terms of pre-millennium sitcoms....I'll go with

1. Simpsons
2. Roseanne
3. Cosby Show
4. Fresh Prince

I don't think I can even pick a fifth. It's not my favorite genre. But those 4 are pretty good to me.

I think looking back it's still pretty good and, at the time, it was even better. Thoughtful show with distinct characters and some real candor in its plotlines. It definitely portrayed things differently, especially in the female characters (Roseanne, her sister, Darlene) but also with Dan and some of the peripheral characters. It's almost hard to believe it was a Chuck Lorre thing. I think it had some stale moments, particularly toward the end, but what show doesn't? Overall I thought it was pretty bold and also pretty funny.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

you never liked show Y but never watched it, and your opinion has never changed.

the simpsons is epic and i literally feel sorry for anyone who cannot at least appreciate it on some level. it is probably the most influential work of comedy in any medium, ever.

As a kid I enjoyed the humor, like Woody's character was funny as fuck to me and before him Coach (RIP). Norm's little self-deprecating one-liners were funny and Ted Danson was pretty solid. I remember being really sad when it went off the air.

But watching it today I am much less impressed. A lot of typical, boring comedy situations. The acting is good but the characters and general moral of the show is pretty much shit. It's just a completely anti-intellectual setup. Anyone who's educated is stodgy, pompous, pretentious and full of shit. Anyone's just a regular jock and/or drunk is cool or least down-to-earth and likable. The show was basically a celebration of stupidity and alcoholism. But, at times, it was funny as fuck.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

but yah.

If you talk about anything other than sports, or how much you hate your wife, or you're making fun of someone......than you're annoying, a prude or a loser.

Diane (and any of her friends)
Cliff
Frasier and his wife.
The articulate Seafood restaurant manager from upstairs

It's completely anti-intellectual. It's also anti-political correctness. And it's conservative. They make fun of the social justice warrior archetype too. They targeted feminism pretty consistently. Homophobia was pretty common too.

Aside from all that.....In general, i find the cosby show holds up much better cause it had superior writing.

First of all, it's a sitcom, so it makes fun of all of its characters. Yeah, Diane's a pompous snob, but Norm's a hopeless alcoholic, Sam's an aging has-been lothario, Carla's a miserable a-hole, and so on. You're not supposed to celebrate any of them, as they're all pretty much losers (except for maybe Woody later on). The point of the show is that all these sad-sack misfits managed to form a make-shift family.

And if you think the show was anti-intellectual, you badly need to re-watch it. Maybe see the second season finale, it's explicitly about the depths that good art can uncover, even for a supposedly a dumb jock like Sam. Or the episode where Frasier and Lilith move in together. It's mainly about all the intellectual characters and its damn funny. The first few years especially were about as cerebral as a sitcom can get.

And I have no idea where you get that the show is anti-politcal correctness or conservative. I'm kind of Cheers fanatic and I can't recall them touching on that stuff. Maybe you're mistaking Diane's grad-school pretension or Frasier's haughtiness for a political stance?

Norm IS celebrated....I don't see how you could see it any other way. He's presented as the most likeable character in the show and the most popular amongst the barflies. Woody and Coach are basically the same character. They are both presented as lovable idiots....the archetype of Shakespeare's fool. There's several times when one of them says something which is presented as the wisest thing (especially Coach with Diane). It happens over and over again. They're playfully stupid....but actually smarter than everybody else at key moments. Not unlike Forrest Gump. It's a very clear celebration of ignorance. Chuck is right....all of the unlikeable characters are intelligent.

>And I have no idea where you get that the show is

>fanatic and I can't recall them touching on that stuff. Maybe
>you're mistaking Diane's grad-school pretension or Frasier's

Off the top of my head.....there's an episode where Norm pretends to be gay because Frasier's intellectual friends (again with the anti-intellectualism) hire him to be an interior designer. There's also some extremely flaming one-off characters that show up from time to time. There's also another episode where one of Sam's old baseball buddies shows up and comes out. I'd have to see it again....but I can recall that it was an ATTEMPT to be progressive about homosexuality....but was basically filled with really lame gay jokes. And Norm, Cliff and the other guys decide they don't want to go to Cheers anymore because it's becoming a 'gay bar'. The end of the show DOES present a progressive message....Sam decides to accept his gay friend....but not until after we have to sit through a whole lotta predictable innuendos.

As for feminism....Diane's whole character arc is anti-feminist imo. It's intrinsic to the storyline. Educated, modern woman with progressive values can't help herself in falling for the stereotypical alpha-male in contradiction of her politically correct views. For all her 'women hear me roar' (a trope they actually used in one episode)....she can't help but fall into what's portrayed as the 'natural' order of things. She needs a tall, dark handsome alpha-male with a big cock. There are several episodes that portray feminists as man-hating, militant, unreasonable, theory-loving intellectuals who are out of touch with 'reality'. WHENEVER Diane espouses feminist values she is made a fool of pretty much immediately.

It's a good thing the Simpson's swooped in and made it cool to be smart again.

Critique aside...the best episodes I remember were when they feuded with the other bar owned by Gary (Gary's old town tavern or something like that). Also, the con-man guy....I think his name was Harry. Those eps stick out to me.

It's not some sort of eccentric opinion. I did some reading tonight during my boring night-shift and almost every analysis I can find, positive or negative, characterizes the show as anti-intellectual.

Like this:

https://books.google.ca/books?id=KJphKHFtVooC&pg=PA33&lpg=PA33&dq=tv+show+cheers+anti-intellectual&source=bl&ots=PTCvRnHVz5&sig=wPPDKR0ue6aQU3l8-EkFIUGwEbI&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CBwQ6AEwAGoVChMIp4Law_jByAIVSsljCh3lpgG9#v=onepage&q=tv%20show%20cheers%20anti-intellectual&f=false

All the dumb characters are happy and wise.

All the smart characters are unhappy and unwise.

The theme of the show (and I stole this) could be broken down to 'why ask why?' And it's VERY similar to the tropes used in Forrest Gump. Admittedly, it never occurred to me before cause I haven't spent much time thinking about Cheers. But after Chuck suggested....yah. It's pretty damn obvious.

I think those who say so are missing the joke. Which is fine, I guess.

or maybe i just don't care to analyze the show in this way b/c i enjoy watching it. whatever the show is it makes me laugh now about as much as it made me laugh back when it was originally broadcast. i like that. i don't like picking it apart - i don't want to. i'm not entertained by that. life is hard enough as it is - Cheers is something i enjoy. i don't have any interest in tearing it down for being anti-intellectual. i recently lost The Cosby Show - that's enough. i'm not interested in losing Cheers. i like Cheers as-is, whatever it is.

so, no. i don't think the show was anti-intellectual and if it is i don't care b/c i find that anti-intellectualism entertaining. *shrugs*

It was the fucking 80s. A lot of the stereotype or mentality still even exists, it wasn't a show to make you think it was a show to make you laugh even at the bullshit stereotypes that existed, the good and the bad. It was definitely a reflection of the times and the city (minus more racism being that it was Boston). Geez people just wanna take the fun and laughter out of everything on this site lol

Can't think of even ONE sexist or misogynist example in Roseanne. Cheers is literally filled with them. The way they wrote Frasier's wife Lilith is further testimony to that. Women who seek success and education are represented by Rebecca, Lilith and Diane. All unlikeable. The former a gold-digging opportunist. Lilith is cold-hearted, sexless, oppressed. Diane is pretentious and out-of-touch with her true, more traditional desires to be saved by Sam.

And more on Lilith. Anyone remember the episode where Lilith goes on tv to talk about feminism and woman's issues? Sam and Frasier end up on the show and Lilith betrays all of her progressive values and finally admits she wants Sam too ('For god's sake Sam let the buttons fly' while she rips off his shirt). Again....the message is that feminist ideas are theoretical fluff that aren't applicable to the 'real world'....deep down these feminist women yearn to be in a traditional patriarchal relationship. Feminism is portrayed as a denial of their true nature.

I remember one episode where Diane gets assaulted by a sexual predator/stalker. And it's resolved by her accepting his apology at Sam's request to 'give the guy a chance to redeem himself'. Even after the apology, the guy says something else that was creepy and it gets the canned laughter treatment. Sexual harassment is constantly portrayed by the show as harmless 'boys will be boys' fun.

It didn't have to be. There were other shows/movies/books written during the 80's that weren't sexist. Yes, sometimes we have to take into account the general paradigm of an era when critically evaluating something based on today's standards. But some critics were calling Cheers sexist even while it was being made. They were right.

And I don't think societal paradigms about sexism change drastically in six years anyways. What great change in our perception of feminism and gender issues occurred between 1982 and 1988? The fact is....Cheers was sexist and Roseanne was not. In fact, Roseanne has publically stated that she thought Cheers to be sexist and that she intended her show to challenge it along with other sitcoms.

I don't remember Family Ties being sexist. Nor the Cosby show. So appealing to the era it was made in simply isn't enough to dismiss any critical analysis. BTW....I've been reading about it tonight and Ken Levine (the main writer of Cheers) had been accused of sexism by other people in the industry during the 80's as well.

Carla? - Surely the most consistently miserable of the lot, she's single, constantly pregnant against her better judgment with an army of bratty children. Not supposed to be a smart character.

Norm? - I don't know whether you count this character as dumb or smart(another problem with your theory is that it divides characters, when . One of the through lines of the second season is that Sam is so much smarter than Diane gives him credit for). He's a depressed, oft-unemplyed alcoholic. He's not happy at all -- he's just resigned to his lot in life. To read happiness onto him is to badly miss the joke -- its supposed to be sad, but still funny, the extent to which his life revolves around Cheers.

Cliff? - A virgin loser who nobody outside of the bar likes. Also very much one of the dumber characters.

So just about everybody on the show is unhappy to a large extent. That's the reason they have to seek out a make-shift family of barflies. To single out the intellectual characters as unhappy is to miss the point. And every character is laughed at, and every character is sympathised with. So we can say Frasier is as lovably pompous as Woody is lovably dumb.

Also, these characters aren't static things. Sam started out somewhat happy, is somewhat driven mad by his ill-fated romancere with Diane, and ends the show realizing that all he has is his bar. Frasier started out a sadsack, but for as or a long stretch around the eigth or ninth season, Frasier is the most content and well adjusted on the series, until it falls apart again. Good characters can be more than one thing.

Anyway this whole exercise is pointless because the happiness of a character is in no way is an endorsement of them. If your show only makes its "good" characters happy and its "bad" characters unhappy, that is a shitty show. Cheers isn't a Sunday school lesson, and I don't want or need TV to affirm any particular character trait.

In the classical anti-intellectual way. The show constantly shows her to be SMARTER than Diane. Carla's character is actually a perfect example of the show's anti-intellectualism.

Yes. I do read shit like that. I consider myself to be an intellectual and I like thinking about the world around me. I used to skip class to go to the public library.

It's probably intentional...but the way you're dismissing me is precisely what Cheers is about. You're dismissing me the EXACT same way the bar dismisses Diane. Which is fine...but let's call it what is.

From Wikipedia:

Anti-intellectualism is hostility towards and mistrust of intellect, intellectuals, and intellectual pursuits, usually expressed as the derision of education, philosophy, literature, art, and science, as impractical and contemptible.

I mean, that's the dynamic between Diane, Frasier et al with the rest of the gang at Cheers in a nutshell. They're mocked and humiliated for liking poetry, art and philosophy. This happens in literally EVERY episode. You can look through this thread and see the exact same dynamic. People who don't like Cheers are 'miserable', 'over-analytical'.

There's no doubt....I definitely AM a target for anti-intellectualists. I have never, in my entire life, been annoyed by someone analyzing or philosophizing about something. Y'know how Diane might start talking about an 18th Century French poet while the guys at the bar groan and turn the football game louder? I've never related to that type of annoyance. We've all met people who use intellect in a disingenuous way....like when you can tell they're more concerned about appearing to be smart rather than interested in the content of a given intellectual subject. I get annoyed by that too. But there's a tendency for non-intellectual people to characterize all intellects that way. Especially if they're insecure about not being familiar with the subject matter. It's a very safe (and predictable) response when one feels out of their depth.

That's why Cheers is not for ME. The Simpsons is for me.

She went to war with producers on lines for the show
She even didn't appear in one episode because of her fights with them
It's a completely different setting
And can't be compared

only problem with Always Sunny is so the screaming.

First season was great but somewhere around the 4th or 5th season they got lazy or lost a few writers and just screamed for 5 minutes each episode.

Cheers is the most cited greatest sitcom of all time and one of my childhood favorites. I know though if I tried to watch it now I will probably be a little underwhelmed.

The innovative fresh jokes from the show have now become staples and even cliches as every other sitcom since has been influenced by it.

Cheers invented the "will they or won't they sitcom rom com situation" and even had a resolution of it that would be unexpected today and yet we are bored to death of by every new sitcom that utilizing that plot device.

I think that goes for great sitcoms and comedies in general that people wait a generation to go back and start the "Cosby show, Cheers, Jeffersons, Blazing Saddle, was overrated talk".

Feminism was espoused by two of the characters.....Lilith and Diane. They were constantly humiliated for it. And their characters, deep down, yearned for something that was contradictory to their ideals. Their ideals were portrayed as being silly, pretentious and disingenuous.

Which is typically why people who appreciate comedy from generations before themselves tend to be sorta connisseurs of comedy. You have to make an effort to understand the context and time. The majority of people stick to appreciating comedy from their own time. And when you show someone comedy from a past era...they tend to be underwhelmed.

If a comedian read a transcript of Redd Foxx in front of an audience....would anyone be blown away like they were during his time? Lenny Bruce is a big one for me. He's so revered.....when I actually watched some footage I was completely underwhelmed. But you can't really appreciate guys like that unless you keep in mind the context and circumstances surrounding their act.

Even as a kid I loved it. I still sing the Kelly song whenever I meet someone with that name. A coworker at my last job had that name and she was young and unaware of the song. I had to send her a clip. That said the Diane/Sam dynamic was way better than Sam/Rebecca.

Special shouts to Frazier Crane playing the same character over two shows for probably two decades.

Rebecca was funnier than Diane. sure, her humor was more broad but her character also had more of an arc which gave the actor and the writers more to work with. she did more.

i read on Wiki that the Diane character was originally conceived w/all of the elements that made up Rebecca. they ultimately went a different direction w/Diane but once she was written off the show and Rebecca was created they imbued Rebecca w/the traits originally intended for Diane.

It changed in Season 4, and when Shelly Long left it went it in a much broader direction.

But the first 2 seasons were especially great.

And the final episode was devastating sad.
