""Black men hate going to the Doctor" (re: Black-ish)"

Something I've always heard is that Black men, especially older ones, are highly against going to the Doctor. If anyone saw Black-ish last week, it was focused on this topic, as Andre's Pops said he hadn't been in 30 years.

At the beginning of the episode, they showed some historical "flashbacks" as they always do...they were comedic, but still laced in truth. It mentioned the Tuskegee Experiments, and how segregated hospitals would let Black patients die without helping them.

So I'm wondering, are these reasons among others the reason that Black men hate going? I know it's partially a class issue, and it's surely an age issue.

And while there maybe a cultural difference between your doctor and yourself, unprofessional and unethical treatment by your doctor doesn't have to be tolerated. Your health is more important.

I'm sure this has been studied and someone has a real answer, but that's what I always thought it was just the fact that healthcare isn't as vital to a man's day-to-day life like it is for women. Plus, women serve as the family "medical administrator" most of the time anyway.

couldn't POSSIBLY impact how Black men feel about going to the hospital.
Those attitudes couldn't POSSIBLY be passed down 1 or 2 generations.
I mean, that was your daddy's Amerikkka, and generational fears aren't even real!

Firstly, my Dad is a white, *Englishman* (so save your AmeriKKKa hilarity on me... that's your history, not mine) and it took a month of convincing for him to get a (thankfully benign) lump checked out on his tongue last year.

My girlfriend complains weekly that I haven't been to see a doctor for over a decade.

This is a male thing. That's why there are a billion articles on the Internet about why men don't like going to the doctor and why Movember became so popular:

http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Conditions/Heart-Disease---The-Top-10-Reasons-Men-Put-Off-Doctor-Visits_UCM_433365_Article.jsp

http://www.webmd.com/men/news/20070620/why-men-skip-doctor-visits

There are plenty of things society, and especially American society DID do to Black men that it didn't do to others that have caused tangible knock-ons down the generations, but making them afraid of the doctor does not stand out. Men the world over just dislike going to the doctors... so unless we ALL got affected by those things they're not the cause.

If you'd taken the patriarchy route rather than the white supremacy route when choosing your prejudices to blame you might be doing better. Personally, I'd lean to thinking it was down to unfair expectations placed on men to be strong, silent and stoic.

You carry on polishing that chip on your shoulder, champ.

My soon to be father-in-law (African American) has exactly the same conversations with his wife as my father (White, English) has with my mother. Which are the same as I have with my girlfriend and my brother has with his wife.

As I said, you have a lot of things to be righteously angry about on the racial discrimination front, I just don't happen to think this is one of them.

I'm sorry you're so upset by that.

of discriminating against black patients. There are other factors, like duh men don't like to go to the doctors. but distrust of the medical establishment is one of them. the us did medical experiements on black soldiers up until the 1970s. there's a lot you don't know and a lot that's different over here.

... plus I have African American family and am able to compare them to my disgusting alien kin, but yeah, sure, ok. I'm just being ignorant and foreign. Good one.

I'll let you all cook away - Black men ARE more afraid of going to the Doctor, it's just hard for us pale foreigners to tell because all other men are also reluctant to go, but for different reasons.

It's obviously a totally different cause producing the same result in Black men as all the others.

How confusing.

The *result* is that men are afraid of going to the Doctor, not that one group gets worse treatment than others.

There may be all sorts of reasons Black people are afraid of going to the Doctor, but from my experience of life in both the UK and the US all men I've ever met have roughly the same reluctance to go to the Doctor.

One group may have a more logical REASON for their fear - but the fear is the same. The *result* is the same - men don't go to the Doctor as much as they should.

I can't believe you're all so desperate to argue today, tbh. It's a pretty simple observation.

Why was this OK in your posts and not mine? Post 42?! I entirely agree - this affects ALL men from ALL races and the most reliable way to improve it is to get them all married.

As far as I can work out my posts and your posts on this pretty much agree with each other.

I can't work out why you're arguing at all.

Have you changed your mind since Post 42? Are you currently chewing yourself out in your bathroom mirror?

Which is only applicable to Americans.

Britain absolutely played its part in the slave trade and there are a million things to still be upset about. I've tried to put that disclaimer in every post I've made to make it harder for people to misunderstand, but you're still managing it. I'm not saying there are no faults in society that are leftover from slavery and institutional racism... I'm saying that this problem in particular affects ALL races, so it's likely not JUST about race.

The articles I posted show that all men are reluctant to go to the Doctor.

This behaviour is seen in men from ALL walks of life and so maybe the race-based reasons aren't as clear cut as you assume. Do White men and Black men need different reasons to produce the same lack of a Doctor's appointment? Or should we be looking at their commonalities for once? What is it about being MALE?

Your point about marriage is one of the best in here, if you hadn't crowbarred the weird judgey language about Black men into it. Unmarried men the world over go to the doctor less, not just Black men. One of my (Black) girlfriend's main adopted roles is to be my medical nagger... just like my Mum is for my Dad and her Stepmom is to her Dad. If I didn't have a female partner I doubt I'd even go for dental check ups until I was in pain.

I finally go to the doctor and get an xray. Verdict: broken wrist. Thankfully no surgery necessary and I didn't fuck it up more playing hero

he said one of his homies had an impacted wisdom tooth
or something like that
and homie walked around with the personal
bottle of vodka and when the shit started hurting
he'd take a swig of the vodka and swish it around in his mouth lol

but man i think alot of men are leary of doctors
im sure this play a factor in our low life expectancy
ive know too many older black dudes that have died in that 58-65 range
thats kinda young when you think about it

i messed my ankle up terribly this summer
a real bad sprain shit was swollen for like
3 weeks like i almost cried putting weight on it lol

i just rolled with it iced it and shit
i problably shouldve went to the doctor to check for ligament damage
but im back runnning and hitting the leg press like its nothing a month later...

but when you think about it doctors really always have bad news
like mechanics
like youll be feeling good when you get there
then they look you over and be like i dont know how
or why youre still alive you have this this and this wrong lol

intelligence is pre-set from the get go to some level...

every man isn't going to use that logic that hey i'm a breadwinner, i should see a doctor so i can be around to see my kids through college etc logic.

on average though, that's what happens. hence the original post.

i'm sorry if you can already see it's not going to happen for you.

they all died relatively young(ish). I think it's less about being married and more about the quality of the health care. Perhaps marriage factors into that if one or both spouses have access to higher quality facilities.

But if you're married and in the hood or maybe even a majority black "middle class" neighborhood odds are you still have crap options for health care it would seem.

If the facts are so simple then please educate the rest of us with tangible evidence. No one is hit dogging by pointing out the blatant self hate in your post. The reasons we get less healthcare have little to do with "black men as breadwinners". Lack of access to adequate care is a problem in our community. Access to adequate care requires investment from politicians amidst a wave of apathy towards people receiving government assistance. Stop using conservative white supremacist talking points to tear us down.

Your logic is infuriating as shit and YOU SERIOUS ABOUT IT TOO. You reaching like SoWhat right now.

Not enough for you? Here's the interpretation:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2015/05/13/1383179/-The-absent-black-father-myth-debunked-by-CDC

Although black fathers are more likely to live separately from their children—the statistic that’s usually trotted out to prove the parenting “crisis”—many of them remain just as involved in their kids’ lives. Pew estimates that 67 percent of black dads who don’t live with their kids see them at least once a month, compared to 59 percent of white dads and just 32 percent of Hispanic dads.

There is a lower marriage rate among black people and that does seem to have an effect on how many of them are living with vs living apart from their children. But the level of involvement, of parenting, across racial lines from men in either of those two living situations - is not that significantly different. In fact, more Black fathers who live apart from their children are in most measurements are actually far more involved in their children's lives which may be a direct result, and/or offset, to the fact that far more of them are in that situation percentage-wise.

So if you were to take the single-parent percentages for each and multiply them against the numbers of actual children involved what you would see is this:

Hispanic Children in Single-Parent Households: 28.6% x 16.3 Million = 4.66 Million

Black Children in Single-Parent Households: 54.7% x 11.2 Million = 6.12 Million.

White Children in Single-Parent Households: 22.1% x 55.9 Million = 12.3 Million.

So even with an almost twice as high internal percentage of single-parent households, the external percentage is that there are still only one third one half as many black children living in that situation as there are white, and when you add this greater quantity of white "at risk" youth to the CDC data it seems that the quality of some of that white parenting may not be quite a strong.

---

Please stop using white supremacist talking points to demean African-American men. You're better than this so stop making statements that data clearly debunks.

I cited source that all but killed your logic.

You're making up strawman statements about how black men not being married affects black men's health. Show me data provides a direct correlation to your statement, not indirect, not strawman argument. Stop falling for the BS Fox News feeds you. It's extremely disappointing that you feel for their lies.

The data doesn't exist because there isn't a direct correlation between black marriage and attitudes towards public health. You're literally pulling stuff out of thin air.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/03/racial-bias-doctors_n_1472281.html

"It's been really extensively shown that minorities don't receive the same quality of health care as whites in the United States," said Lisa A. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H., a professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and lead author of the study. "I've been interested in the extent to which that is accounted for by the fact that a lot of minorities see physicians who are different from them culturally and racially, and that there might be some problems with cultural misunderstandings or miscommunication."

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/Health/story?id=3401076

The study, by the Disparities Solutions Center, affiliated with Harvard University and Masschusetts General Hospital, is the first to deal with unconscious racial bias and how it can lead to inferior care for African-American patients. It was published in the online edition of the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

The doctors in the study were told two men, one white and one African-American, were each 50 years old and complained of chest pain. Each showed other symptoms of a heart attack.

The result was most of the doctors were more likely to prescribe a potentially life-saving, clot-busting treatment for the white patients than for the African-American patient.

"Physicians, like others in the U.S., in this country, demonstrated unconscious biases based on race," said Massachusetts General Hospital chief researcher Alexander Green.

and....

Dr. GREEN: Well, we have a very serious problem in health care today. The problem of racial and ethnic disparities in care - that is that the quality of care that minority patients get in this country is not as good as the quality of care that white patients receive. And it's not just an issue of socio-economic status or insurance. We know that from a number of studies, this has been extensively documented in hundreds of studies - probably close to a thousand now.

Cooper first measured doctors' attitudes about race, which she said may mimic those of the general population. Physicians in the study were asked to complete two versions of the Implicit Association Test (IAT), a computer-based tool that measures how quickly a participant associates good or bad words with people of each race. If an individual associates the good words with a particular race at a faster rate, that person is considered to have a subconscious preference toward the race, Cooper explains. The second version of the IAT asked physicians to assign words to each race that represent medical compliance and reluctance. Researchers also analyzed the audio recordings of doctor-patient visits and issued patients a questionnaire after their appointment.

so essentially the OPINIONS and ATTITUDES of the doctors in these 'studies' as opposed to us actually in reality not following thru with protocols

so because of these opinions and attitudes they are now being communicated as fact is problematic imo

and the fact that this article is telling us to 'speak up' and 'think positive' is even worse

In response to Reply # 0

Like they make a whole day of it and enjoy getting out the house and talking to people about their health. At least my grandmother did.

I know so many older black men who by the time they decided to go to the doctor it was too late.

Unless you're getting a thousand different types of bloodwork done and biopsying every organ of your body. Things like blood pressure you can get checked by just going to the drugstore walk in clinic. Diabetes screening too most likely. You really don't need to bother a doctor for things like that.

In response to Reply # 87

men's less-frequent use seem negligent, but that's not it. Women's bodies sort of demand more healthcare from a younger age. I remember in middle and high school, every girl had a story about going to the nurse's office because she felt sick (and being told it was gas.) The only times I ever set foot in the nurse's office was when I twisted my ankle in 7th grade and when they would measure our height and weigh us once a year. That was it.

I think y'all being attuned to that part of your biology on a regular basis - and then having babies - makes women more concerned about health in general.

the equivalent of about $0.50 American for a (very good) haircut. So naturally I was in his chair about every 5 days, or so. But I was going so often that my shape-up didn't have enough time to heal and I was getting scabs on my hairline.

The moral of the story?: Too much of a good thing is bad.

As was said - women go more often bc they gotta get the goodies poked and prodded yearly or whatever starting at puberty. We don't. So yall get used to seeing docs when you're in good health. We don't. I've been told I don't need yearly checkups until I hit age 40 unless something goes wrong b4 then.

fuck you.

I've had so many people I know in their mid 30s looking like they're in good shape but having blood pressure issues and whatnot. I mean once a year to me is simple if you have coverage.

Drinking drugs smoking diet and thinking the bmi charts aren't specific to you are what have ppl with issues like high blood pressure in their 20s. If you're going to drink and smoke regularly and you think you're so muscular the chart doesnt apply to you even though you're not at the gym daily, you should probably go regularly. Most ppl don't. You might be right tho cause the avg anerican is fat.

Unless you have some hardcore issues/symptoms, or a family history of certain conditions (cancer, hypertension, diabetes), it's often a waste of time because you're rarely told anything you don't know.

Healthcare these days is a joke because we're given such blanket responses and treatments for things. If there's something wrong, I'm usually more inclined to just go to an outpatient facility (i.e. "Patient First") than my PCP.

General medical concerns of young men are heavily downplayed (i.e. "you're young, you'll be okay").
