There are similar rules in the military when a senior officer enters a room.

You see it some in the civilian world too, if the CEO of major company enters a room it would not be uncommon for people to stand especially if he was addressing them directly.

Aren't you an attorney? Don't you have to rise when a judge enters the courtroom?
