I thought both eps were pretty good. It's not as dry as Mr. Robinson was.

Anybody know the strategy behind these 2 shows not sharing the night?

They only made six episodes and playing two a week. It'll be finished by the time the fall programs start. They were summer shows with a chance of a mid-season pick up or longer run next summer.

Like dude can't act very well and with this type of show that means a lot cause it's not really asking the cast to do too much.

Loretta and DAG are amazing, the stimulus check argument felt like I was at home with my folks being silly. His brother and the ex-wife are funny but I need them toned down just a little, but I get it's the crazy family angle. Other than that, I'm watching every week

Doublenegative hit it on the head below...

>-The thing I don't like about the show is Carmichaels white
>girlfriend. I mean, she is technically black but she reads
>like a white woman that just happens to be a bit black. There
>is a range of blackness but they found someone thats not even
>on the spectrum. To contrast Rainbow/Bow on Blackish somehow
>still maintains her blackness even though she is depicted as
>being "other".....I think maybe this is because they are open
>to the idea of having an ongoing dialog about what is black
>and so by contrast and comparison as a viewer you are able to
>see where Rainbow is on the spectrum while also understanding
>where she comes from as an individual.

Hell, Niecy Nash plays Cedric The Entertainers wife on a show.

People are so accustomed to being mad about something that they don't realize when they don't really have a reason anymore.

"Dark girls" seem to be winning just fine on TV from where I sit.

Really no reason to hate on the "redbone" at this point. I'm not going to overthink where on the black spectrum this woman falls. She's an apparently new black actress doing just fine on a TV show that's only a couple of episodes in. That's just fine with me.

network tv when it comes to black shows just seem as if the laughtrack
ain't even laughing at the cornball vibe of these shows.

david allen grier is cool however this is the kind of show that back during his living color days he would have turned his eyebrows up at.

NBC stands for=Negroes Blame Cosby. you ain't gonna luck up with a flip script and land a different world.

nerdy backpacker protagonist? check. bougie black girl? check. hood black girl? check. brother who ain't got no job, tommy? check. loud but wrong parents? check. i'm halfway expecting quest to show up next season as the quirky neighbor across the hall (it's NBC, it could happen).

that said, the show is hilarious. it borrows heavily from martin (see above character descriptions), but it works. david alan grier and loretta devine in particular are killing it, but there are no weak links in the cast and the writing is really good. if it gets picked up for another season, i don't see how they can keep up this super trendy subject matter. right now, the show is "let's take a subject everybody's talking about and make an episode around it." that works for a six-episode premiere season, but eventually they're gonna run out of subjects and it'll have to be about the family and friends dynamics. but i'm digging it so far. my favorite new sitcom in a while.

i watched 2 episodes and i'm not sure i laughed once. I found the jokes just reinforced silly stereotypes about black people and made the characters more caricatures than people. blackish is thoughtful insightful and really funny on a lot of topics. this show is just MEH and everyone is over the top except for carmichael nad his gf who are just MEH.

The show is well above average, if shows like Big Bang Theory, or How I Met Your Mother can succeed, this definitely has a chance. It kind of reminds me of Everybody Loves Raymond, but it's a lot more watchable--for me. Loretta Devine, D.A.G., & Lil-Rel are all hilariously fantastic. Good to see Tiffany Haddish on something.

I'm a hater, but I can't hate this show.

first seasons were awkward

the writing is good & some of the jokes could be punched with less obvious set up

but i like it

he was on WTF with Marc Maron & they made the good comparison of how a show about yourself takes a minute for a non-actor to find himself within acting like himself

without being taught into being "himself"

& his brother on the show is a break out star

his g/f need to stop overacting her funny

-I'm curious how many reference layers are present in the show opening.

I know I'm not the only person who thinks of 'A Different World' with that opening

-Some of you mentioned Carmichael coming off dry or flat or without spirit but I think this makes perfect sense. He is the comedian in real life, he is the main character on the show so its a nice twist to have the lead character play it straight in contrast to the support characters who are all kooky/weird/funny

-Tiffany Haddish is the shit. (she is the sister in law). I'm so glad she has found a recurring role outside of Real Hollywood. I'm in love with her South Central Los Angeles accent, she reminds me of the older girls I grew up with

-I feel sorry for you if you get offended by the way this show depicts black people or if you think the idea is that it references ALL black people.

-DAG's depiction of a dad is spot the fuck on. I lost my shit when I saw him wearing those moc mule slip on shoes...those are the ultimate dad shoe.

aaaaaaand finally

-The thing I don't like about the show is Carmichaels white girlfriend. I mean, she is technically black but she reads like a white woman that just happens to be a bit black. There is a range of blackness but they found someone thats not even on the spectrum. To contrast Rainbow/Bow on Blackish somehow still maintains her blackness even though she is depicted as being "other".....I think maybe this is because they are open to the idea of having an ongoing dialog about what is black and so by contrast and comparison as a viewer you are able to see where Rainbow is on the spectrum while also understanding where she comes from as an individual.

Carmichaels girlfriend by contrast comes of as one dimensional and there to only acts as a voice of dissent against Carmichael's traditional and rigid parents.

Now you know. But I've still watched 3 episodes. I wanted to give it a fair shot.

Agreed.

I also agree it's got a slight Martin vibe - but without the over-top Martin.

When it's just Jerod and 1 other person I think it drags (his girl, his brother, the transgender little-brother.)

But its 100 times better than Mr Robinson and my Tivo has room.

P.S. :And anyone dissing the girl for being "too light" just remember, whites ain't going to claim her so your just ostracizing someone for the color of their skin. <-PREACH

in my post i was saying that she comes off as a white woman that happens to be black

and if you compare her character to Rainbow from Blackish then the differences really come out.

Her and Jerod are the centered ones - if he was light skinned you'd be accusing him of being a white woman two.

Everyone else in the main cast is very exaggerated.

Its ok... DAG is still hilarious but Carmichael is the weakest one on the show.

Dude is stiff.

Hopefully he finds a groove because it isnt a bad show.

the content is REAL topical so i wonder how that will work out when they get a 2nd season
i think carmicheal is the least interesting character on the show
but as he's one of the writers that's not really a knock on him since the other characters are so entertaining

Every episode has an issue theyre trying to cover and it comes off as preachy in an after school special way. I like JC and some of the show is funny. I want to see the show succeed but it needs better writing

DAG is great. And I like Jerrod's dry humor. I could do without Haddish's styke of character...like if yall divorced why is she always around

I like the brother. Maxine is okay, not sure what yall mean by white people seeing her as white, that's weird. Loretta Devine is up and down...sometimes she does too much

every episode is him telling the family why they're wrong about something or bringing the mood down acting smarter because of the generation gap. I guess he's supposed to be the voice of reason or the moral barometer, but it isnt very fun

I get Archie Bunker, George Jefferson and Fred Sanford being curmudgeons, they were older. But Jerrod's character just exists to act like he's better than everyone
