i've been whispered-at by about three bums this week.

what the fuck is that shit about?

are they trying to be polite?

I go to this one Dunkin donuts...been hitting the same one on and off for eight years...I'm usually there around 6:30 am

This cat been outside, holding the door open for me, for at least that long, with less visible wear and tear over the years than me.

Something about it irks the shit out of me, something about being able to use that energy/discipline for a more respectable 'job'

Plus, he smokes constantly....I'm sure he could be bumming smokes but I suspect he buys them...I can't get with it.

Not one dime from me in all them years, but he asks me everyday like its Groundhog Day and it's the first time we're meeting

ordering thing. She didn't say anything at all. I ordered my food and the worker asked if that was all, I asked the lady if she wanted something. She looked shocked but shook her head, so I ordered her a full meal a drink. She walked up to the window got her meal and then walked back towards some houses.

That was the best approach for me, AND she didn't stick around to ask for anything from another customer. That makes me think she really needed it!

that they're 'normal' people who lost a bet.

and then i crack up thinking them niggas are on the island of a street, with a cup, cause they lost a bet.

then i think to myself, the next time i bet someone something, my prize is going to have them out on the corner (of my choosing) actively panhandling for money.

when i think of it, that laugh lasts for hours.

I was pumping gas last week in the city. Homeless guy is going from car to car,
asking people for "a couple dollars to get something to eat". I see the last guy
give him something. He comes to the back bumper on the opposite side of the car
and asks me for a couple of dollars. I tell him to give me a second while I finish pumping
and I got him (in the past, I've been extremely charitable to homeless people).
I finish, hang up the pump and pull out my wallet to get 2 dollars (I have 7 dollars cash
and have other plans for the 5. Remember I said he was on the opposite side of the
car? As I pull out the 2 bux, he says "Oh, OH, I really need 5 because I was tryna get
a value meal!" THAT right there is the worst thing you can do when asking me for
money on the street. Don't get all in my business like that. I gave him the "wtf" look
and said "I need the 5 for something else" while thinking "I really shouldn't even be
explaining myself to this mufucka.
I went ahead and gave him the 2 tho, because he did look terrible. I watched him
ask the next guy, and he did the same thing to him. He then left the lot, as the guy
he asked after me was the last car on his journey through the lot. As I drove away,
I wondered what his story is, like I always do. I also figured that tactic must work
out well for him, since he keeps doing it. Then I wondered if he came up with it out
of need or greed. Who knows.

"Excuse me sir, if someone you knew was homeless would you help them out?"

I guess she just walks through different grocery stores asking people that shit. It's a somewhat disarming gimmick. I just plainly said 'no' and she moved on.

I don't mind breaking off someone if i'm coming out of a store, or if they're holding up a sign at a stop light or whatever but what she's doing, i react like any other kind of sales pitch i get when I'm minding my own business. I fucking despise that shit. I don't care if it's someone homeless, or greenpeace, or trying to sell me some kind of product. fuck off.

that and the gas can people. fuck you and your prop.

not really. maybe just slightly, but it didn't stand out. she was 30-ish, black, average in just about every way.

they mill around (kids kinda playing, dad holding a bag, and moms holding a baby in the arm).

the whole family standing at the top of escalators making eye contact with everyone.

how you even supposed to help with that?

whatever you were gonna give x 4?

what the hell?

with that family, the woman did most of the talking, dude just sat there looking kinda blown/dejected like i can't believe we all out here like this.

i aint never gave them shit.

almost feel bad about it, but c'mon, there has to be a better (less embarrassing) way to raise some loot.

all in your face...so much so you can tell what liquor they had for breakfast that morning.

it's scary sometimes, especially at night and more so if I have my child with me.

This seems like a fit place to share this story:
One time I was pulling into the 7-11 and this dude was going around asking folks for change...well he rolled up to the wrong one that day. Dude cussed him out so bad...asked him "what kind of man was he out here begging for money from women for beer/cigs/drugs? these people work hard for what they got and you think they are supposed to give it to your lazy ass? FOH with that man!" Then he just started naming places that were hiring and was like go ask them for some money through a pay check! Homeless dude tried to buck back but he didn't have a leg to stand on and just slunk away cussing under his breath.

I feel like Arizona is the worst place for this, at least out of all the areas I've lived.

It's so prevalent that before I get out the car to pump gas or run inside to cop beer and donuts I scope the area for "that person". I'll wait until they leave or are on the far side of where I'm at before I get out.

It's not that I don't help anyone. Sometimes they might catch me on a good day or I really might have some change to spare (don't usually have cash or change on hand). I remember one girl had the sign at the stop light and looked real sad and scared. We gave her our left-over food from Buca from my birthday dinner and the look of gratitude on her face had the whole car teary eyed.

As far as the gas station approach, tho, my most hated line is "the buses stopped running" or "trying to get $ for a bus pass". MF, why did you come way out here then? You don't have one friend or fam member who'll scoop you up from QT?

A few weeks ago, I was walking around and a guy asked me for money and I had a couple of dollars so I just handed them over.

The guy was black but I didn't have the mindset that I was 'helping a brotha out'.

This other guy, a white guy, then starts yelling, "Oh. He's got money for the brother but nothing for me."

I looked at him a little side eyed. I kinda wanted to say something, but he looked like he had been drinking and I didn't want to start anything with him so I walked off.

There was one time that a guy I gave money to, found me again and stuck me up with a gun in the middle of a road without any street lamps. I didn't give anything to a person in need for quite a while after that.

I actually don't care if it's made up or not. I have some money to spare (or I don't) but I don't have twenty minutes to hear an incredibly detailed story of your bad luck, true or not.

Though one woman once hit me with all of the bad news ever. She was pregnant and homeless and she just started bleeding and was worried about the baby. And she had AIDS so there was only one hospital in town that would deal with her fairly. And it was like on the 90th block south (this was in Chicago) and we were up in the Gold Coast.

I gave her a ton of money and a ride to the train. I think I actually offered a ride to said hospital, but she reasoned (maybe correctly for the time of day) that the train (and the money for a cab after she got off the train) was faster.

There's a 99% chance the story was complete bullshit. But I figure that 1% likelihood of truth meant passing made me pretty much the worst person ever. Plus, I was coming out of the Newberry after spending an afternoon reading 16th century Spanish texts in their original pressing. That's kind of a perfect storm of liberal guilt, though I was a pretty broke grad student at the time.

I used to work at a homeless shelter and the first week someone hit me with an awesome son story.

I have him a few dollars and the bus driver pulled me to the side and was like... "man, they saw you coming a mile away, dont trust none of these people bruh. they will lie on their first born for some change."

and he was right.

but I feel you on that 1%. you want to believe and sometimes you just want to help someone get thru their day.

I had a friend who would interrupt sob stories and say "look, you can,lie or you can be honest and say you are going to get a taste and I will give you the money you want... but cut the bullshit"

9/10 of them would fess up too.
