There's a small niche of salsa fans that love the Fania era, and Willie Colon seems to have bridged generations of fans single-handedly.

Salsa didn't cross over to the younger generation, mostly cause latin music took a more urban turn to first Freestyle to then what we see in Reggaeton, bachata, merengue, all of which took cues from American rap and R&B.

The thing is salsa dura of the 70s that reflected urban life in NYC changing to salsa romantica in the 80s had something to do with the music eventually being seen as tired and lame.

smoking was banned on commercial flights in the USA by 1997 but not in France. international flight rules are set by the arrival nation not the departure one. that's why i could smoke on my way to Paris but couldn't smoke on my way back to the USA.

Those were the days. The days in which the NON smoking section was smaller and you had to ask for it in particular, and there was no partition between smoking & nonsmoking, whether that was in restaurants or on planes or what have you, sigh.

There was this big ass fire up the street from my house on the way back from the theater too.

Eventful night

...in the theater. I would've been 1 in 1977, depending on what part of the year the movie came out. I kept feeling like I had seen the first one in the theater but couldn't justify how. This clears everything up. I definitely have clearer memories regarding the following two movies in theaters.

In response to Reply # 68

In English Lit class for some reason. I think the presenter wanted to discuss cruelty of slaughtering. And afterwards, there was a scene where the whole class cracked up laughing because in an Indian restaurant, they put a monkey in a cage beneath the table, where only his head was was above and center....and while the monkey was freakin' out spinning in circles, the people took turns cracking his skull with tiny hammers. I don't know why we were laughing. We were a twisted class.

I'd also raise you one and name "Mondo Violence" VHS....a rip off of Faces of Death.

Yeah, my high school was the creme dela creme. Whitney M. Young high school. Thinking back on it, my English Lit teacher was kinda dope. I remember him telling a story about having a house party and later finding out one of his favorite pairs of sneaks were stolen. Then he went out with his crew to try and find the guy to whoop his ass. That AND we still covered the classics like Canterbury Tales, Great Expectations, etc.

Also watched "One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in Psych class. And the same Psych teacher showed "A Clock Work Orange" to another class. He was also the coach of the academic decathlon team and I remember when the whole cheating scandal occurred with Steinmetz high school.

Couldn't even turn my head when I wanted to. I think the barber did that on purpose.

It was the one with the magician doin the super bootleg demo in his own garage with the straitjacket and the lat press machine and the weights on a wire over his face(I think there was a candle under the wire holding up the weights so his escape time was limited, I forget now)

Bottom line, he didn't make it. Course. Still bothers me.

In response to Reply # 81

Shit took like a few minutes per page to print, and were loud as fuck. Paper came on those rolls with the sides perforated.

That was an upgrade for me tho, because I learned on a manual typewriter that had two ink ribbons, one black and one red. Had to *strike* the keys hard. Don't fuck up you paper alignment, either because you can never get that shit to line back up right.

It was revolutionary for me when my mom got an electric typewriter with an erase ribbon in it.

Typing up a report that should have been done 2 weeks ago the night before it's due and waking everybody in the house up with that loud as BBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!! of that print head. Just pray there was no paper jam, then you have to start that all over again. My parents hated me for that

I really wanted a HP Deskjet500, but it cost too much, so the noise continued

I used to play pool and I was a beast on the pinball machine. Used to stand on a chair to play it.

only backwoods southern hillbillies and weirdos from Cali call it anything else... Unless you call all pop "Coke" they're you-re probably inbred and from a part of Mississippi or Alabama that doesn't have running water and still has an outhouse.

>I used to play pool and I was a beast on the pinball machine.
>Used to stand on a chair to play it.

My pops and grandmother used to say the folks at the bar got the biggest kick out of watching me shoot pool when I was 3-4 'cause I used the short stick and had to stand on a chair.

I was mad because it was the first presidential election since the voting age had changed from 21 to 18, but I had to wait until I was 20 to vote.

I voted for Carter.

I introduced myself and we chatted. She had graduated this year. SO I was like, maybe I don't want to know this but...what year were you born?

She was born in 93. 93 was the year I graduated from law school. Law school, which I started at THIRTY. She was BORN 11 years after I graduated from college.

Then at the event I was going to, I met a couple who had also graduated from my school. They graduated 11 years before I did. In 1971. Think about how much closer in age I am to them than I am to the young lady. Now see if you can hold back tears.

You couldn't get BET in Rosamond or Lancaster, but you could on base (Edwards).

I almost swore off Rap City when Joe Clair and Big Lez were gone.

I graduated about a year and a half before I met a person with a camera phone.

Me & my friends had this arbitrary grace period/sweet spot for when artists could release music. Too fast, we assume the album is gonna suck. 2-5 years, the closer it gets to the 5 years, we assume the album is just seasoning and getting better. Anything after 5 years, that nigga fell off.

Realizing that you actually remember the day that MTV debuted and how it only played Rock and New Wave. The first "black" artist to get any real play on MTV was Michael Jackson. And the video was Billie Jean.

Thanks to MTV, I will always have love for Devo and The Talking Heads.

I just tried a headspin on the sidewalk in front of grandma's house when I was 4 or so.

Just launched headfirst at the concrete, you know, like I thought people were doin in the 80s on every commercial and cartoon in existence.

I have no clue how I wasn't concussed or permanently injured. But it took a nice bit of skin off my forehead.

I remember being able to figure out who had HBO by the size of the antenna on their roof. When the one on my parents' house came down, I remember that thing being taller than my pop.

We called it electric football.

They came in a yellow team and an all red team.

We had this older guy in the neighborhood that would paint our favorite on them.

Mines was the Pittsburgh Steelers who were good at that time.

The worst was when you have you men set up to run a sweep and it runs the opposite way toward the other end zone.

Mad fun.

257. "i saw "Wild Style" in the theater"
In response to Reply # 0

somehow i convinced my dad to take me
it was R rated and i was 6
the closest theater to me was in Elizabeth (NJ)
i remember him questioning the content
and complaining about the "reefer" smoking in the theater (he was a cop)
God only knows what i was naive and oblivious to that night
i was focused on that screen and that culture
