You can be harassed in any attire. A litany of historical accounts have shown us this. Further, it's dehumanizing. It encourages us to be archetypes rather than human beings. It's basically shallow and naive respectability politics.

public perception. I know in NYC these men will most definitely receive less negative attention from cops & get better treatment from strangers if they are dressed up. Is that right? Hell no it isn't. But let's not pretend like it makes NO difference.

Let my love slide in and never slip out

it all varies by context.

for example, a well-dressed guy in the middle of the projects can easily draw unwanted attention. an unreasonable person might assume he's there buying drugs, overseeing drug sales, or pimping.

i understand the importance of minding how one dresses and the image one presents (i'm wearing a suit right now) but i don't bother dressing sharp to avoid being harassed by police. b/c i am not convinced that works. plus...fuck the police.

fuck you.

Can it somewhat help, maybe. It depends on the officer/person they're dealing with. Ultimately, the effect is negligible at best.

Further, I'll state again that it's dehumanizing. Why should we not allowed to be human and have dressed down moments? To appease white supremacists who'll never view us equally anyway? Kill that noise!

It's a move driven by fear that is flat out ineffective and it's shallow.

So, what are poor people who can't afford to dress their way out of white supremacy supposed to do?

I will continue to dress appropriate to my circumstance. I dress professionally at work or if I'm going out, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna dress up to run to grocery store or Walmart just to please white folks.

reiterate that in NYC (a place FULL of shallow folks) these men will be treated better than they would if they were dressed down. Just because you're offended by that idea doesn't make it invalid. There are some people who choose what they wear strictly off of personal taste. But ultimately there are some people who put clothes for the specific purpose of receiving some sort of preferential treatment. And in a lot of cases, I've seen it work.

b/c there are plenty places in NYC where a black man in a suit won't get preferential treatment.

i mentioned the projects before...i'd say the same about any 'high crime area'.

and we all know about dressing up to get in to certain clubs or other hot spots and dressing up when going shopping for luxury items or whatever. that's nothing. this article is specifically about dressing up to avoid police harassment. that idea is bogus anywhere.

fuck you.

and though i don't live in NYC i understand that there are places in NYC where a black man in a suit will not receive preferential treatment from police. in fact he may get the opposite. which is why i say your point about this issue being different in NYC is off-base.

In regards to police.

Especially if I'm getting stopped in my car. The only time my clothes played a part is when I had on my ref shirt.lol

But a suit, tie???? Didn't matter...still have been harrassed.

Like, I imagine you get stopped by the police and harrassed. Then you throw a flag down on the play and say "unnecessary roughing, offense. 5 yard penalty" and for some reason the cop complies by stepping away to talk to you from a more reasonable distance lol.

Like time of day, neighborhood, what i'm doing etc?

I don't think it would be that great of difference based on my personal experiences. Is there one cop out of 100 that would do things differently based on my dress? Perhaps.

Do I feel more confident in regards to my interactions with police based on me having a suit vs sweats? Not at all.

Dressing up for the purpose of avoiding racism is absolutely an invalid idea. If a person is dressing up to engender self-confidence, fine. Do you, but it's not an effective antiracist policy. We tried that already. Plenty of black people dressed in their Sunday's finest during the BCRM. We're still dealing with direct and systemic racism.

Also, I'll ask again: what are poor people who can't afford to dress up supposed to do? It's a limited idea that doesn't really take the full scope of the problems we're dealing with into account.

you wear outside the house? Why would the phrase "dress to impress" even exist if people weren't getting preferential treatment based off of what they wear?
At this point you and homeboy are just arguing to argue. The article is poorly put together, and some of y'all find the premise behind it offensive. I get it. Personally I don't think most brothers who dress up are thinking about the cops when the do it. That much we can all agree on. But all this negligible effect/exercise in futility bs.... nah.

my point all along has been that it's ridiculous to think that wearing a suit or otherwise dressing up will result in more favorable treatment by police. it might work in limited application but as a general practice it won't.

the police angle is why i gave so much pushback against your point that this issue is different in NYC. b/c the NYPD will definitely not give a suited black man better treatment in all circumstances. i named a few situations where he might actually suffer worse treatment. i based those on my experience working on criminal cases in Chicago.

as opposed to targeted, based on what dude is wearing. Cops are taught to "profile". And I don't believe this specific article is about putting these clothes on to walk through the hood.
I can totally accept whatever you have to say about what happens once police interactions occur though, you would naturally be more informed than I in that regard.

>you wear outside the house? Why would the phrase "dress to
>impress" even exist if people weren't getting preferential
>treatment based off of what they wear?

I dress appropriately for my situation, as most folks do. If I'm trying to get a loan or going out or going to work or going to court, I dress up. If I'm running to the corner store for a quick ingredient, I don't. How I dress has nothing to do with combatting white supremacists.

>At this point you and homeboy are just arguing to argue. The

I'm not arguing to argue. I'm saying, as I said before, that dressing up is an ineffective strategy to use against racism and ultimately an exercise in futility, when it comes to combatting racism. Does that mean there aren't appropriate times to dress up, of course not. I didn't think that needed to be stated.

I, however, genuinely asked you to give me a case where dressing up prevented a person from experiencing racism. You said you'd seen lots of cases. Surely, it's not a problem to elaborate on that statement. This is, after all, a question based on your reply to me. So, if anyone is arguing just to argue, it ain't over here, b. I'm just engaging in dialogue.

Your appearance will probably affect neutral and positive whites not negative ones. may keep the cops off you as they would likely pass you over for the guy with the sagging pants. But with civilians at night-- all bets are off.

I will say that sharp clothes can build confidence that much is for sure.

Seems like more of an excuse to sell clothes than anything else though.

how on the set of SNL people would always say "why are you so dressed up Chris?"

he stated that he was in tune with the idea that his white counterparts could come into work in sweats and it would be no thing while if he were to do the same thing the reaction might be different

...."dressing up" to "survive" isn't a smart tactic period.... a lot of what those folks were wearing wasn't even "dressed up" just more casual or church suit like...

people have to think better to treat you better...you thinking they'll treating you like a "good" black person based off your clothes is fairly unintelligent

...also thinking that the sagging pants is the norm is not well thought out either....but ok...
