"Where were you when [major event happened]"
Fri Aug-07-15 02:37 PM by -DJ R-Tistic-

We will list an extremely memorable day/event, and each of us can then respond with the story on where we were at the exact moment.

Where were you? How did you find out? How did people around you respond? Anything else crazy that you remember about it?

by Marcus Klinko and Indrani for that Bravo TV Show "Double Exposure"...very surreal that day, and one of the first times I recall TMZ getting the scoop on the news before everyone else..on a weird note I kept running into Ron Artest in the lobby of the hotel we were shooting at ( the SL someshit ). He would just walk around like in flipflops and boxers and a tanktop just mobbing with some friends

It was my old coworker, his brother (who are both Dodgers fan, my ex and myself (both White Sox fans). The game went into extra innings, but I think the Dodgers won. My coworker mentioned that he saw that Michael Jackson went to the hospital, and when I got home I heard he died.

On a side note an undergrad I worked with at the time was later wondering why the big deal about his death. I went off and had to explain that every R&B singer and boy band they grew up liking all copied MJ.

was working nights at the time. So I was asleep. I was waken up from a phone call from my mom telling me he was rushed to the hospital. I turned the TV on and not very long after they announced his death. Man that celeb death fucked me up. Favorite musical artist since I was 5 years old. Went to work that day and played MJ all the way there. When I got to work a couple of people were like damn when I heard the news I thought of you. I was upset for a couple of days off that.

I was the first to say it, since I'm always on OKP n shit. So I told one dude, he was like "he died? I doubt it, it has to just be a rumor." Then, someone else said it, and then we all knew it. We had a group meeting 20 min after, didn't mention it.

Then.......a hour AFTER the group meeting, this one 55 year old dude who was the weirdo of the department pops out of his cubicle and says "ATTENTION!!!! EVERYONE....I have a major announcement............

Michael. Jackson. Is. DEAD."

We all just paused, and said "............yeah..........we talked about that two hours ago."

in just the right spot so she could watch the TV broadcast. Which more or less involved me poking the coax into my hand so that my body became an extension of the antenna, otherwise the reception was crap. She was obsessed with Michael Jackson.

I was at the gas station when they announced he had suffered cardiac arrest... I called Mom to turn on the news stations to confirm it was true.

I was riding down Vermont ave, heading back to Mom's house when the DJ announced he had died... I immediately burst into tears and was crying like I'd lost family.

I heard people muttering it in the lobby. My first thought was that it was a hoax or something, but that info spread like wildfire. People were just passing the info on like old school telephone.

The rest of that day was super surreal. You could hear his music everywhere that night. It was sad and beautiful at the same time-- much like his work and life story oddly enough.

My roommate worked at Cantor Fitzgerald and wasn't home. Apparently, he crashed at his girlfriend's apt and called in sick with a hangover.

was in the hospital.

the girl next to me said "hey, a plane just crashed into the WTC."

i started packing my stuff up. she asked what i was doing and i said "we're at war. i'm going home to get my wife & daughter and then go to the hospital to be with my other daughter".

the girl asked why i thought about war based on a simple accident.

i told her that a plane crashing into a building in NYC aint a simple accident. that shit is a declaration of war. shit just hit the fan.

i told my sup that i was out and while she was hemming & hawing about me leaving, word came in about the 2nd plane.

by then my cell wasn't working cuz nobody's cell worked. i was living in North Jersey at the time so i'm right there by it. any my daughter was in the hospital about 10 miles from the city so that had me worried. and my family is in and around DC so if we're at war they're in danger too.

listening to sports radio 610.

they were interviewing Sugar Ray Leonard when one of the interrupted and said a plane hit the World Trade Center.

13 minutes later all hell broke loose when the second one hit.

We rolled a tv into the lunch room and watched the events on ABC.

I went out in the company car about 2:30pm and it was weird that no planes were flying over this fly zone near the job.

By the time she called, both planes had hit and both Towers had fallen. My younger brother lived in NY and worked semi-near the area at the time, so I was happy to hear that he had called my folks to tell them he was okay.

Went into the living room (I was living with roommates at the time) and watched some of the coverage. Then I went into work; I was a newspaper editor for a couple of small community papers, so I had to. Got there and told my reporters to do whatever they needed to do that day, including spending time with their families. Then I did some reporting myself. That helped. Finished around early afternoon and went home.

I turned on the TV and saw nothing but smoke and it took FOREVER for them to say the buildings collapsed.

It was only 30 seconds but it felt like a lifetime. I was scared as shit because my mom sometimes had meetings in the Towers and I didn't know where my sister worked in Manhattan.

I had just pcs'd up there and it was my first official day of work in my new squadron. I was still living in the dorms and my car was still being shipped up there. Someone was supposed to come get me for work. I went to breakfast and went back to wait. I didn't have a tv and I wasn't listening to the radio. 7:30....waiting. 8:00....waiting. I dozed off for a bit and then woke up and called. "Uh...yeah this is Airman ALmighty...someone was supposed to come get me for work." Supervisor comes, picks me up and says "Sorry, we're on lockdown. Some ass holes just flew some planes into the World Trade Center and The Pentagon."

I thought I was hearing things. But when I got to the building it was in full lockdown.

My building was next to the Combat Alert Cell which was a building with a few fighter jets that fully ready at all times. It was normally quiet but that day they every single fighter jet on that base was over there getting weaponized and they were all lined up ready to take off. I walked into the breakroom and the news was on and you could've heard a pin drop. The weeks after that were crazy for us.

I was Warehouse Manager then at CompUSA. I remember waking up and getting ready for work and my mom was in front of the TV and I saw one or both of the towers on fire, cant really remember. I was thinking fuck here comes world war 3. Then it hit me my older brother went to take his army physical that morning around 3am. We were both wondering if he had heard the news and hopefully he backed out. Of course they werent going to tell anyone there. I went to work and it was the weirdest week ever. No customers we had a monitor wall and the only thing we could play was the news. So all our sales people were standing around watching the news all day long. I had to do my job still because freight wasnt going to stop. So I had to ignore what was going on while at work and try and do my job. My brother ended up getting home at 6pm or so. Signed up for the army and was assigned Infantry. Had no idea anything happened. He never went to war. By the time his unit was getting ready to head out he was kicked out of the army for fighting. My little brother signed up a few years after, he did a tour. I've talked about his exploits here a few times.

I was in some sort of early history class, but just as we finished class and got up to leave, a young lady walks in and tells us someone flew a plane into the WTC.

I didn't realize how serious it was until I walked over to the student center and saw on the big screen tv they had in there how serious it was. It got worse when they said planes also hit the pentagon and that other plane United 93 crashed in the woods.

I had a cousin who worked at the pentagon and my folks worked out on the army base in the area I grew up in-so I immediately go to my dorm and call and check up on them and they were cool. It took a while to find out about my cousin, but he turned out to be ok. Although his truck was parked on the side of the pentagon were the plane hit it, thankfully all he lost was his truck.

about 25 people. mostly white. They reacted predictably flabbergasted, but right then, my boy (mexican dude) jumped in the middle of the room like "FUCK YEAH!"

They didn't know what to say to him, and it just made them more upset. I still laugh about it pretty hard to this day.

My then-boyfriend called me, very emotional, almost in tears, certain that this was a horrible miscarriage of justice, and I was like oh huh I bet Black people feel like you do EVERY. DAMN. DAY. so get over yourself jesus fucking christ.

The relationship had been on the rocks before but that ended it and that was the last time I tried seriously to date a white guy.

The entire 240 acre campus stood still, classes were paused and everything. Everyone found a TV to watch. So there was an unusually large group of Black and Brown guys gathered in my room to see it. After the announcement, I remember excitedly running to class, except everyone in my classes for the rest of the day were pure White--with the opposite reaction, their level of pissed off just fueled my joy.

I mentioned this one recently.

Me and my boys would meet up at this little shack in the neighborhood before we went out for the night.

This old man used to have liquor and his wife would cook whiting sandwiches. And he had a radio inside the shack that played cds and we had on the radio that night when they announced he had died.

We drank heavy that night.

I'd planned on us going out to dinner so we could avoid the coverage in case it went bad. But then driving over to her place it was apparent how well things were going, so mostly watched the TV at the restaurant. By the time we got home, it was just about over. I told her, "As soon as it's 9 p.m. and the west coast polling places close, they're going to call this for Obama." And they did indeed.

They even gave an update that Tyson had tried to go out for the round without his mouthpiece, and I remember half-jokingly wondering if he was planning on biting him.

Then shortly after, the update came that he bit off a piece of his ear.

that was an epic week in my youth. Went down with the family for a week. Camped out on the beach. First off at the offices for the campground they had a fucking LION son. A FUCKING LION! They also had a spider monkey. He was friendly as shit. He had on a collar and a leash. But that fucking leash was like 300 feet long. He was able to wander all over the offices and take a stroll outside. I never saw him run out of slack. But every morning the lion would roar. Fucking bone chilling roar. After about day 2 you were used to it and slept through it.

I was 15 about to be 16 at the time. The beach was chill then on day 3 a bunch of co-ed's showed up and took the beach over. Apparently they had a amateur college volleyball tournament on that beach every year. So 15 year old me is on a beach with a bunch of hot 18 to 22 year olds. Me and my uncle would walk over and watch the tournaments everyday. Chicks in bikini's, flashing their titties, public sex, topless bathing, anything you can think of. It was great.

On the day of the fight I went into town my my uncle and my moms boyfriend. We went from bar to bar trying to get in to watch the fight. But they wouldnt let me in because I was 15 and not 16. Im like this is Mexico how you gonna start carding people now? Finally we found a spot that let me in. Cost $20 instead of the $10 cover. But we had fish tacos and beer and watched that shit show. Fucking great week.

November 8th, 2005 The greatest night in the history of GD!

I was 9, so my parents had to explain to me what it all meant. Magic was by far my favorite athlete, and I was obsessed with hoops. They tried to break it to me gently that it was deadly and that he might not live longer than 5 more years or so. I put on the brave face for awhile, but eventually went up to my bedroom when I thought nobody was paying attention and cried.

watching mtv that sunday morning when it scrolled across the bottom that "The Notorious BIG was shot and killed after a party at the Petersen Auto Museum...

F*ck me up for real.

Big was my favorite rapper and it devastated me when i heard it.

Its weird but it almost felt like losing a family member to me.

That was the day, for me, rap died for me a little. I just never felt the youthful exuberance i had once felt for it.

There's other major events that came after this when I was older that I have no memory of, but for some reason I remember this very clearly. My mother was watching the news in the living room, and I remember seeing the footage.

In response to Reply # 78

The whole class had been gathered to watch the event. Reagan got on stage and at some point he said something mentioning "God" and almost immediately I responded "He doesn't hear you!" and got put out of the class.

Came back into a room of shocked faces and a crying teacher.
