good for him

wonder if he will get the backlash Tim Tebow got, will be interesting to see

but really why do we care what these athletes have to say about anything other than football, i don't care to hear TD Jakes talk about sports.

The only active sport right now among the major four sports is baseball, so this will make 'headlines'. I wonder if he mentioned this during the regular season if this would be newsworthy or not.

but it feels like the same sentiment with the demand for abortion advocates to start speaking out

that is

I think the number is 33% of americans are unaffiliated

http://www.pewforum.org/2012/10/09/nones-on-the-rise/

we outnumber the theologists

so if this is a movement of coming together in an effort to shout down their stupid beliefs

I can dig it

you can't understand it with an explanation

Or is just isolated to the magazine article?

I can't imagine breaking news coming across the scroll talking about "Foster loses his religion"

yet join these atheist "organizations". what's the point of an organization of people who don't believe in anything? what do they sit around and talk about, nothing? are they trying to spread the word of nothingness?

more likely they just hang out and watch football on Sundays and think church is kind of silly.

the Atheist organizations are hella weird, though.

I wouldn't join such a group myself (I am an agnostic), but given they way non-believers are viewed skeptically and are marginalized, I can see the appeal. I wonder if such groups try to assign morals and life lessons like traditional religious groups do. That would be a bit odd to me.

I think you could see how that applies to politics in this country

with recent major issues like abortion, gay marriage, etc...

heavily lobbied on by religious groups

the idea, IMO, of organizing as a group, is to ensure that our beliefs are reflected in public policy

Just not theological things.

Such a group could meet to talk about art, or science -- both of which are among the most fulfilling aspects of life, and almost completely overlooked by modern religions. And they could organize charitable or political work.

In fact there are "humanist churches" that cover basically those bases.

I would probably never join such a club, in fact I find the idea kind of terrifying, but I think it would be pretty cool if they took off.

why join any atheist group for hang out time? is it simply so that you can ensure that no one is going to bother you about religious stuff? I hope this doesn't come off snarky, cuz I'm not trying to be.

you seem to be assuming something that isn't at all true.

literally the fact that said groups exist, is proof that that you haven't thought this through

In particular, a large number of the people who go to church every week don't do it because they think God is watching down on them scornfully whenever they masturbate. They do it because they get joy and comfort out of being in a community. A lot of people get inspiration out of going to church, even though that's not necessarily what a church is designed to provide. Maybe they like the songs, maybe they like the wardrobe, usually they just seem to like being around their friends and neighbors and feeling like they're bettering themselves and their families.

This stuff is not religion. None of it requires any sort of supernatural beliefs (and I would assert that a substantial fraction of the people who go to church do it for reasons like those above, without any fundamental belief in the supernatural).

Again, it's not common for atheists to collect themselves in a similar way (probably in part because it's still a taboo), but they would have every reason to.

Why not just call it something else? You can call it whatever you want. But people who have religion automatically belong to this sort of club, so it makes sense for the people who don't, to band together, even when the topic of conversation isn't their disbelief.

Also, as a few others have already noted: a specifically-atheist group could work together on the political and charitable causes that specifically matter to them.

unfortunately, without organization, it is impossible to avoid having your rights trampled over.

so while I do not belong to such an organization, I can entirely see why someone would.

especially when you have people trying to include religion in things that I can't avoid, like the laws of our country.

they sit around and talk about how to ensure that society is tolerant of pluralist views, and to ensure religion's 'moral' views are not imposed on those who think/feel otherwise. i.e. ensure separation of church and state is a reality, not just a statement
its pretty awesome, i think.

most people do believe in the supernatural.

think for a second how profoundly different those two perspectives are.

think for a second how those perspectives can inform decisions from marriage to war to health care. all kinds of shit.
