I have been a stay at home dad now for almost 5 years. Before this I ran warehouses. 10 years of experience in management. My son is entering 1st grade in a couple of weeks and will be in school full time. So now I am able to get a part time job. I have been applying all summer trying to take anything available. School janitor, fast food worker, cleaning offices, retail, night time stocker, anything. What is really killing me is all the applications are online and have required fields. So the minute I put my job history and wage history I am fucked.
This is the really funny part. I couldnt find my resume on my laptop so I logged into my old careerbuilder account to get it. In doing so I accidentally activated my resume and I have had 3 different companies call me for an interview. Basically I can land interviews for management positions without applying. But I cant get a call back to tear tickets at the local theater.

dont really want to put the miles on the car. I already put enough on it driving my son around to all his sports plus running errands. I mean if I absolutely need to I will. But its definitely a last resort.

wanted a summer job at shop rite
she suspected they didn't call her back because of the over qualified thing
turns out another teacher worked there she spoke to her she got an interview and yep she got the job but yes they were concerned
you may need to reach out to friends in those fields to put in a word with managers so they don't feel threatened and you can explain your situation

but yeah I know when I was hiring I was weary of over qualified people applying for entry level work. But still no call backs. I am betting some of these managers still feel threatened. I mean they are mostly college age kids running a handful of employees. I ran a 300,000 sq ft building and had 100 employees I was directly responsible for. So I understand. My FIL works for CVS and my wife for Bed Bath & Beyond I can always hit them up and get into one of their stores. But they both are high up on the food chain and I dont want to be known as the bosses son inlaw or husband.

I dont need a job. I would like a job. It's also not a matter of embarrassing them. It's a bit more complicated than that. I have know a lot of people up on the food chain. They have come over and hung out. We have gone to their homes. Their kids know my kid. These people would be my bosses boss. I have known all the store managers for years. Most of them were at my wedding. Now I am working for them. I think it definitely might cause issues with other employees. I am trying to avoid that.

she quit a good gig to pursue her other interest but then realised it wasn't sustainable.
she applied to the pharmacy at Walgreens and wasn't even called back for an interview.
she eventually found a gig in her field so,she is fine but finding part time work is hard when you are overqualified.
they know the chances of you bouncing for something better is high

which I understand. but I didnt expect it to be this tough. I dont plan on working part time for a long time. My wife and I both agree my son needs to be priority #1. We really want someone to be home when he gets home from school from now until he graduates. Make sure he is doing what needs to be done. Make sure he isnt getting into trouble. Help him get to whatever extra curricular he has to get too. So I wont be working full time again until he graduates. Hopefully by then he will be signing some multi million dollar contract and I will be able to officially retire. If not then full time work to pay for school.

I used to have sports after school in HS so I rarely got home before 6.
even when I did get home early there was an after school program with girls and basketball so we would go home and turn right back around to hit the community center.

well a couple of reasons for that is the distance we live from the HS. We live 7 miles from the HS we are zoned for. There are plans to build one down the street 3 miles but I doubt it will happen. So we will need to take him and pick him up from school. Also he plays hockey. There is a District High School league but his practice facility is 30 miles away. There is also that. Also the fact that my mom wasnt home when I was in HS and that is when I got lazy. Did less work and got into shit with my friends.

Instead of listing the details of my duties as a warehouse manager I would detail the ways my warehouse manager position prepared me for ticket taking. For example, "talking to others to convey information effectively" is a skill of a warehouse manager and can be useful in directing people to the correct screen.

--sure up your resume ...meaning...make sure your resume includes key terms that the position your applying for are present
--recruiters/headhunters.....might be a necessary evil in your case....find out different (high-er level) staffing agencies to see if they can help find u something...might be easier explaining to them your history and why u been out for so long and they might be able to place you

i remember right after i got my masters i was trying to get a job at the mall...i went in person and filled out applications and got maybe 1 callback and i think that's because i had been the manager of a similar store in the mall two years prior. She asked me all these questions of why i wanted that job and not anything in my field...it was rough.
happened again in NYC when i lost my job, i finally had to look for part time jobs similar to my field. i got a job mentoring youth at a summer program and then another part time one with the health department. wasn't too bad.
perhaps you could see if there are part time jobs in a related or similar field? maybe even doing a few hours at a warehouse a day or something. that way if you ever decide to go full time, you already have an in.
or you could see if you could work with older kids (or adult learners) in alternative schools...you just have to be creative and really comb through listings. i'm sure you'll find something but don't be discouraged if it takes a while.

got a little something I do on the side. Only making about $150 a month on it. I am also trying to learn to code. Trying to do at least an hour a day. Ive done a few courses at code academy. Working on building a couple of websites.

At least you are making an effort. I hear that one can make some good $$ coding. I just commented because it seems based on your responses that working from home may be your best option.
On a slight unrelated note, I would like to own some investment property one day. Maybe purchase a duplex or small apartment and have that as supplemental income. It isn't necessary now, but when I approach retirement, I want to get it going that way I will have something to keep me busy once I retire.

grandpa worked for Edison and bought these duplexes. They had them for years and they eventually started paying for themselves. My grandparents became pretty well off from those rentals. I mean they werent filthy rich but they bought their house in cash and had 500k or so in savings when they died. Bad thing is my grandma sold the duplexes about 4 years before the housing boom. She could have cleared 7 figures had she waited. Either way not bad for having a 2nd grade combined education.

Yeah.. That may be another options n for you and your wife later in life. I know I can't buy any late apartments, but I need to think about supplemental income down the line. If push comes to shove, I will go the out of state real estate route.
But yeah, seem like your grandfolks did the right thing at least until your grandma sold which I am sure she got some decent coin from the property sale.

but how knew housing would go nuts the way it did? The wife actually wants to rent out this house and buy another right now. We bought real low and have over 100k in equity right now. Our mortgage is $1400 a month we could easily get $1800-2000 a month in rent. But I just wouldnt feel right about the risk unless I was working full time again. That way if we ever lose our renters and have to pay 2 mortgages ourselves it wouldnt be an issue. We also have the option to rent an apartment while we rent this spot out for a while. But I cant go from 2700 sq ft to a tiny ass apartment. But yeah it is definitely something that we are looking at.

my wife's sister and brother and their spouses have been working on opening a business for about 5 months now. I dont want to say what it is because I dont need none of ya'll coming in and visiting me. But they will be opening up in the next week or two. They called me today and asked if I could help them out part time. Timing couldnt be better because the wife's car just took a shit today. So we definitely need to buy another car now. So the part time job went from me just wanting one to get out of the house to me NEEDING one to pay for that extra car note. They only need me 3 days a week. So I am going to work a open to close on Wednesdays and Sunday. Then another 4 or 5 hours day either Monday, Tuesday, Or Friday. So I can get 25 or so hours a week. I can carpool with my brother in law because it is in Riverside (40 miles away) Plus I will be helping family out. Plus now I will have a shit low paying job to throw on applications to look for something closer when they dont need my help anymore.
