In response to Reply # 1

it costs me $45 to fill up my tank and i have a 60-70 mile commute everyday. on top of that my car chews up oil and it's a cadillac so oil changes are NOT cheap but my brother is a mechanic and hooks me up. now one of my o2 sensors is bad and that's going to put a nice dent in my pocket. i got in an accident last month and i had to pay my deductible and that wasn't cheap. my note isn't that bad and i still have my car registered in maryland because the insurance rates in the state of michigan are downright criminal! so i'm saving a few bucks there. but overall just gas alone is where most of my money goes.

The pre-school is TOP NOTCH, and I believe it to be worth every penny. The daycare is fucking daycare, but the only way to get into the pre-school is to be in the daycare and age up. The waiting list is crazy. We put my daughter on the list at 2 months old, she got a spot at 2 years.

The trade-off is that we have a cheap-ass Pittsburgh mortgage.

I'm just wondering what happens to your neighbors who don't pay $2,800/mo for childcare. It must be hard to save for the future or build wealth with that kind of expense.

In order:

Cell phone
School loan
Water bill
Credit card bills
Internet and satellite bill
Food
Car insurance
Gas, electric and solar bill
Pest control bill
HOA fees

Factor in car maintenance plus petrol, then that would be near the top of the list. Oh, it cost some coin to keep the house smelling good, so I put that somewhere near the middle to bottom of the list.

i looked into betterment when they first started popping
but they basically buy vanguard index funds for you and tack on a fee

the automated deposit thing makes it easy cause i don't really think about it. every week ing and vanguard just pulled the dough from my checking account and keep it moving

i just look at the money i have in savings doing nothing and figure it could be doing more. i have a lot of merchandise in my business but that's a slow trickle and an ongoing thing. something where the reserve is generating income seems like the move.

92. "Yup, I have lots of money that could be better managed"
In response to Reply # 82

I generally just push money toward my 401K, savings account, and automated investments each week. It's worked well for me so far, but I'm sure I could do better.

I find that it's way more productive to admit to my ignorance than to wallow in it like you do

85. "+1 for vanguard."
In response to Reply # 81

Started in 2011. Something like 30% of the money in there, I didn't put there. it's just growth of the market / income. I don't think other funds are getting that kind of return. The skimming off the top is an insult to injury. Vanguard automatically pulls out the money from my account. I think a 12 year old could set it up. I don't understand the point of betterment. It's not like this is that complicated.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

91. "they're dumb"
In response to Reply # 89

most of us here are in our late 20s/early 30s
betterment vs. buying the funds yourself can literally mean 100,000s in fees over the next 30-40 yrs of investing
best move is to take a hour to pick the funds yourself
and if you are that pressed for tax loss harvesting take another hour at the end of the year and do it yourself
it's not complicated at all
