His appearances at whatever award show not terribly long ago, where he appeared *as* celebrities, were among the most cringeworthy "comedic" bits in award show history.

Not until he began doing impressions 1/2 way through did I kind of laugh...but yeah, I still agree he and Jerrod Carmichael are comics of the same caliber. Both could open for Hannibal.

and a bunch of naysaying, jaded, road comics. He presents as if he were them...except he's a fairly successful twenty-something, who has done nothing but win in comedy, so his mean/angry/annoyed themed jokes are seemingly disingenuous. Plus, his set with the anti-Obama and Hitler>MLK jokes are clear attempts to be controversial, but instead those jabs probably make people feel like he's the type of token character he played in that Seth Rogan movie, in real life, where tons of white people can cite him as their only Black friend.

i don't have high hopes for his show either, it looks pretty bad, but if it is a result of his special then that's a victory. should it get cancelled i don't get the sense that he couldn't get work doing other things. he did well in "Neighbors". He's a young dude...this is a pretty good start for a young career.

but his style is kind of everyday average joe...i picture him having a pretty diverse following. not particularly anything...except young, i guess. i have no idea though. not really sure how he landed on HBO to be honest. he must have impressed someone.

I read he got the special because he asked for it. I can't find the story but he kind of arbitraged spike lee and hbo (told HBO he had spike lee, told spike lee he had HBO) into getting a special.

if black folks didn't embrace him as the next star comedian than it is what it is but i didn't see him trying to placate any particular audience...just a young dude talking shit in a slow drawl.

which is what he seems to be heralded as in the comedy world. like you said, his style is so lackadaisical which works for him but also makes it hard to get too excited about anything he does. his jokes are very witty and clever but not slap your knee funny. that said he's awesome in his bit roles. he def has a lane there. i wached a couple eps of his new show. it has some funny moments.
