Brunswick Co. Powerball winner, drug suspect charged at their home
Posted: Jul 24, 2015 7:42 AM CDT

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
Brunswick County’s $188 million Powerball winner was charged with drug possession at her home Thursday, along with another man who recently bonded out of jail on a $3 million bond.

According to Emily Flax with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, authorities went to arrest Lamarr McDow, 31, at a home he shared with Marie Holmes on Boverie Street in the Rutledge community. McDow had missed curfew, which violated his pretrial release agreement.

When they went to arrest McDow, detectives noted a strong smell of marijuana, and returned to the home around 10 p.m. with a search warrant. During the search, Holmes was cited for having less the a half ounce of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Detectives also seized a .45 caliber pistol, and arrested McDow for possession of a firearm by a felon. He was taken to the Brunswick County Jail, and was given a $6 million bond for violating his pretrial release agreement in addition to a $10,000 bond for the possession of firearm by a felon charge. He was also cited for simple possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

During a court hearing Friday morning, it was revealed that Holmes posted McDow's $3 million bond on Feb. 24. McDow was arrested in Nov. 2014 on heroin charges.

Another man in the home, 23-year-old Jeffrey Antuan Gause, of Shallotte, was arrested during the incident for resisting a public officer. He was placed in the Brunswick County Jail under a $1,000 bond, and was later released.

Two others in the home, Danell Lamont McNeil and Damarius Dontrell Simmons, were also cited for simple possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Authorities say three children, ages 4, 5, and 9, were present in the home during the incident. McDow indicated to authorities they were his children. Flax said DSS was not called to the residence.

According to Flax, complaints had been filed against the residence in the past.

Marie Holmes claims $188 million prize

Holmes provided one of the three winning tickets on Feb. 23, and was presented a $188 million check. She chose to receive the lump sum payout worth approximately $127 million, or nearly $88 million after taxes.

Holmes said she planned to give back to the community, specifically to the church and to cerebral palsy organizations. She said she has always wanted to travel, and this would allow her to fulfill those dreams. Additionally, Holmes said she planned to set up college funds for her children.

Records show McDow bonded out of the Brunswick County Jail shortly after 5 p.m. Feb. 24. We were told a bonding company put up the money to have him released.

Officials say McDow is a validated gang member. In Nov. 2014, he was arrested along with two other men, on several charges including trafficking heroin.
