i personally am not against the premise of making these films buti honestly don't trust the motivation behind them film & television have very specific purposes where the shaping of a collective psyche is concerned these mediums were created for the specific purpose of shaping a collective culture and it just makes me uneasy that certain films get huge budgets while other types of stories concerning black people don't there's no real encouragement to think beyond the box it is proven fact that stunted imagination also stunts the ability to grow beyond a certain circumstance because you can barely see beyond it roots, sarafina, glory, the color purple, django, hotel rawanda, 12 years a slave etc etc all films that do a great drop of painting a picture
but why is it when we finally get huge budgets to make films its about these things? *shrug*
makes me wonder. and makes me uneasy the more i wonder.

I was reading that Danny Glover kept getting shot down by studios to make a Toussaint Louverture film. It's not an accident that hollyweird doesn't get behind films that depict us overcoming independent of white folks. I ain't mad at you for seeing through that.

do we need all these doom and gloom ass movies? after watching django i swore off overly depressing movies about black people i can fuck with documentaries but dramatized interpretations of our plight are starting to get on my nerves. i most likely will NOT be watching this shit.

the tone of the movie wasn't depressing in every scene. i actually loved it the first time i saw it felt uneasy about the whole thing the second time i saw it the 'entertainment' factor really bothered me
i've read accounts of slavery books fact and fiction about slavery and they give a way deeper view on what it was really like movies about them are almost insulting at this point
as far as what that has to do with emmitt till i agree this story needs to be told but the reality of the story is enough IMO making a glossy hollywood version of what happened to emmitt till bothers me on a level
that's just me. i also never got into the wire because i felt it hit too close to reality and it was supposed to be 'entertaining' the plight of black people has become less and less entertaining to me as far as the small and big screen the main reason being the interpretations are usually through a 'hollywood' lens
and i'm not really fond of hollywood in general.
its funny i say all of that and i fuck with music and even make music that talks about the plight of black folks. go figure *shrug*
music is a different medium to me tho and i could probably go on for hours as to why i feel film and music touch us in different ways.
i really appreciated Django the only time i saw it b/c it gave me everything i've wanted in our history movies - sweet, sweet revenge on those who committed various atrocities i saw in the movies. but i also understand how the weight of it all (w/Django and all other slave movies) can be too much.

it's been long coming and way pass due that we have a diverse collage of black images to choose from, more stories to be told. not just the "man, we got treated to horribly and couldn't fight back" narrative. As true as it is, maybe I wanna see more Shafts or Djangos or Blades or Luthers.

2nd of all, his murder was a galvanizing event in our history in this country which has never gotten the big screen emmy quality treatment it so richly deserves. it is not hyperbvole to say had he not died the way he did and had his family not let the world see what racism really did...the bus boycott wouldnt have happened, MLK wouldnt etc. extremely pivotal event. its long over due actually

HBO might be the only ones to put in a scene where Tubman shoots a scared slave trying to go back. Feature films from big studios don't do stuff like that.
If I had my pick HBO would do a film on Nat Turner. Now that would be epic.

A 2016 debut is likely; in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it premieres at the Sundance Film Festival next year.
