that valvano speech was in 1993, I have never heard anyone discuss the Espys in any form other than that speech clip until the last couple of years when ESPN started pushing the video highlights year-round.

Now that's out the way, can someone explain to me how Bruce Jenner is courageous compared to Lauren Hill and Noah Galloway?
Lauren Hill had a courageous battle with cancer and played for Mount St. Joseph's women's basketball team.
Noah Galloway lost an arm and a leg to a roadside bomb in Iraq and now competes in Crossfit events, runs marathons, and competed in a 58-hour death race... But Bruce Jenner transitioning is courageous because:
"Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue," the statement read.
If Bruce transitioned 12 to 15 years ago then maybe the "heroism" claim holds up.

It changed a lot of hearts and minds and helped make visible a marginalized community.
While she is more privileged than her black LGBT peers, transitioning is never easy, considering the wickedly transphobic world we live in. Plus, her acceptance speech makes for good TV. So I totally understand why ESPN wanted to give her the ESPY.
