But the whole story seems really fishy, that she'd swing on a cop over nothing and certainly that she would HANG HERSELF behind a night in county. WTF? Send the Obeezy signal into the sky, get the DOJ in there.

An Alabama teen died in her jail cell earlier this week, just over an hour after she was booked into the facility. Authorities claim the cause of death was suicide by asphyxiation.

According to AL.com, officials with the Homewood City Jail said Kindra Darnell Chapman, who was black, was processed on Tuesday at 6:22 p.m., following an arrest for first-degree robbery. Police say Chapman, 18, stole a cell phone from another individual on the street.

Chapman was last seen alive at 6:30 p.m on Tuesday, when staff conducted an initial welfare check. At 7:50 p.m., jailers returned to find Chapman unresponsive. Authorities say she hanged herself. She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The Homewood police are investigating her death, according to local WSFA. Bill Yates, chief deputy coroner for Jefferson County, told The Huffington Post that the results of Chapman's autopsy are still pending. Calls to the Homewood city jail and police department were not immediately returned.

As The Root notes, Chapman's death comes amid increasing anger about the death of 28-year-old Sandra Bland, found in her cell at the county jail in Hempstead, Texas.

Bland, who was also black, was pulled over for improper signaling on July 10 in Waller County, Texas. An altercation ensued, and in a video posted to YouTube, deputies can be seen arresting Bland as she accuses them of slamming her head into the ground. She was charged with assaulting an officer and booked into jail. Three days later, Bland was dead, and authorities have claimed she hanged herself.

While reports of apparent jailhouse suicides are not uncommon -- authorities say a 50-year-old inmate hanged himself in a Washington state jail on Tuesday -- the particular circumstances of Bland's death have been met by many with skepticism. In a statement, Bland's family said they are "confident that she was killed and did not commit suicide." On Friday, the FBI joined the Texas Rangers in an investigation into her death.

The close timing of the two alleged suicides has led to a clamor on Twitter, as some believe the deaths may fit into a broader pattern of police violence against people of color, especially black Americans.

The Texas state trooper who stopped Sandra Bland was apparently planning to let her off with a written warning until he became angry when she refused to put out the cigarette she was smoking in her car.

The 28-year-old Bland, a civil rights activist who was on her way to begin a job at the historically black Prairie View A&M, died July 13 in a Waller County jail cell after she was arrested during a traffic stop for an improper lane change.

An attorney for her family viewed dashboard camera footage of the traffic stop, and he said the state trooper returned to Bland’s car with what appeared to be a written warning, reported NBC News.

Bland, who seemed irritated that she had been pulled over, questioned why she should put out the cigarette, and the trooper became angry and ordered her out of the car, the attorney said.

The trooper attempted to open Bland’s car door, and she grabbed a cell phone to record the encounter.

The attorney, Cannon Lambert, said he didn’t understand why Bland should have been required to leave her car during the routine traffic stop.

Police claimed that Bland was “argumentative and uncooperative” during the encounter and assaulted the trooper, who has been placed on administrative leave, but the attorney said dashboard camera does not show the attack.

“We have new footage that has been released and in that video cam that has been released there is not one shot, not one scene of where Ms. Bland ever assaulted police,” said Rev. Jamal Bryant, pastor of Empowerment Temple in Baltimore.

A bystander recorded video that shows Bland complain that the trooper slammed her head into the ground.

Bland was taken to jail after her arrest, and authorities said she was found hanging from a trash bag three days later in her jail cell.

Her death was ruled a suicide, but an independent autopsy was performed Sunday at the family’s request, and those results will be released Tuesday.

The Texas Commission on Jail Standards faulted the Waller County Jail for insufficient training and failure to conduct hourly face-to-face checks.

The Sheriff’s Office said the two jailers involved had received mental health training, but not in at least a year, and used an intercom system to check on Bland instead of going to her cell.

The dashboard camera video has not yet been publicly released.
