"bikers: do you ride with headphones?"

I went on a 3 hour, 27 mile ride from my house to piedmont park. a few times, I wished I had some tunes but it seems risky as hell.

Not enough to really listen to music, but enough to drown out random city noises.
It's not exactly safe; I won't argue for justification - just that it works for me.

I listen for rear approaching buses, cars, sirens, and mopeds.
Those are really the only sounds I need to listen for.
The city though has cranes, bulldozers, jack hammers, cell phones, talking walk signs, loud car music, and wind so much damn wind. None of which I really need to hear and prefer to filter out.
I'm constantly checking my rear for other bikes and I'll get over quickly if needed.
Always watching the road, my left, my right, and sides. I glance into side view mirrors to see what drivers are looking at, rear view mirrors to do the same, tail pipes in the winter to monitor idling cars, headlights/tail lights, pedestrians and general traffic patterns.

And with all of those words, this is what works for me and if someone says "that's dumb," I wouldn't argue.

You really need to be completely aware of your surroundings when you're on a bike.

this is why I say it's one of the stupidest thing you can do.

cyclists usually believe they're indestructible, always in the right, and immune from the same laws cars/motorcycles have to abide by. Nothing says "Nah b, you're wrong" like being flipped 10 ft in the air over the hood of a car you didn't see/hear coming 'cause you had headphones on and cruising through a red light.

..its not something recommended for anyone that isn't an experienced vet (and even then, you're taking a risk).

i ride with headphones (music enhances everything we do, cuts down on wind noise, etc.), but the volume is always low. you can compromise by using one ear (legal).

anyone riding with over-the-ear/clam-shell joints is seriously gambling with their lives, since you're severely limiting your awareness.

http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20150713/fort-greene/barclays-center-crash-leaves-1-dead-3-hurt-officials-say

BROOKLYN — A cyclist died and three other people were hurt in a multi-car crash near the Barclays Center Monday morning, officials said.

The cyclist was heading south on Flatbush Avenue about 7:15 a.m. when a northbound Honda Pilot SUV crossed into his lane and hit him near Atlantic Avenue, an NYPD spokeswoman said, citing preliminary information.

The Honda dragged the cyclist before hitting a black Mitsubishi car near Atlantic Avenue and Fourth Avenue, said Issam Abdelkader, 52, who works at a nearby breakfast cart.

The mangled Mitsubishi hopped the curb and came to a rest outside a Vitamin Shoppe while the SUV kept going until it came to a rest on the north side of the intersection of Flatbush and Fourth avenues, witnesses said.

A piece of the bicycle's frame was seen sticking out of its tire.

The cyclist was lying in the middle of the intesection of Flatbush and Fourth avenues when EMS arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene, officials said.

Two people were taken to Methodist Hospital where they were listed in serious condition, an FDNY spokesman said.

A fourth person was also taken to Methodist with minor injuries, the FDNY spokesman said.

There were no immediate arrests, police said.

That said, I ride with headphones (earbuds) but keep them low.

I've seen way too many articles where car drivers get off with a warning after hitting and killing someone, claiming "they didn't see him/her." Crossing the double yellow and hitting and killing someone sounds like at least manslaughter charges. Especially since too many drivers can't put the fucking phone down and pay attention.

Don't know if bikable is a real word but you know what I mean how easy is it to get around on bike?

car-centric. my section is really not bike friendly at all. even the drain grates are still turned the wrong way. there are few bike lanes throughout the city and near piedmont park.

its becoming easier to ride, but there still some work to do. all that means I'll likely do trails with headphones or not at all on my normal rides.

..again, you make valid points. i just think that people should broaden their perspective regarding limitations on what should/shouldn't be allowed & why.

although the advantages vary, it truly depends on the details of each scenario.

most people place the onus on cyclist. i'm simply stating that we all share equal responsibility when sharing the road.

45. "whenI rode a bike it was on a trail"
In response to Reply # 0

my parents' house had one of the longer public trails in the country (Keystone Trail) right down the hill so I'd hop on it and ride most days after school to get away, get some sun, get some exercise and listen to music. had my Discman stuffed in my pocket, lol.

but now my portable headphones are noise canceling and I've become way more paranoid about traffic, I honestly hate being in cars and always feel untrusting of other drivers, so if I were riding a bike in public on streets and shit there's no way I'd wear headphones. Too many factors to consider. But that's also probably why I never ride my bike, it just sits here while I walk and take the bus everywhere.

so i just got a bike and want to start biking daily
was wondering if you guys have any iOS app recommendation for tracking
i would love an app that allows me to set mileage goals and tracks whether i meet them.....along with reminders of course
also it would be cool if the app had some sort of training suggestions too
like a fitness plan or something based on whatever goals i want to accomplish
i realize after being an athlete all my life that i don't do any form of physical activity....i hope to fill the void with biking until the weather prevents it

..there are plenty of apps with similar features, so its probably best to sift through them and decide which one has most of the attributes you're looking for in one place.

we discuss all this & more during our OkayCyclist convo(s) on the OKP Organix forum:

*btw: welcome to the world of cycling. if you're interested in riding with a crew of like-minded, adventurous flyers in bk (and beyond), let me know. in the meantime, ride safe.
