"So What Then Does The American Flag Symbolize (To You)?"

If we're adamant abt the confederate flag coming down from all state buildings in SC because it's a symbol of hate and centuries of racial injustice

So where do you stand and where should we stand on the issue of the American flag because it can be argued that it too represents a symbol of racial injustice

The truth is I think many within our community abt how we feel abt the America flag

symbol of hate

but the same can be argued for the America flag - there is just as much blood on that flag as it is the confederate flag and the fact that ppl can highlight those instances where the flag was viewed as a symbol for freedom in America and abroad doesn't erase so much of our history that we have yet to reconcile with.

So just because it's "different" doesn't make it any less of a symbol of hate and injustice when it comes to the past treatment of non-white ppl

Partly why so many us are conflicted is because 1.) not nearly enough of negro ppl are well versed in American history 2.) because we want to be patriotic and believe that we have put the worse of this country behind us therefore it's ok to embrace the American flag

of non-white ppl but to many it does and there are legitimate reasons as to why that is

It's tantamount to the slave master who routinely beat his slaves vs the slave owner who beat his slaves occasionally but oftentimes did nice things for them...

^^should the latter be viewed differently from the more brutal slave master because he was oftentimes kind to his slaves and didn't beat them everyday ?

>these things are not the same. no one thinks they are.

How do you know no one thinks this way? Are you speaking for the majority of blk ppl or just OKP? Either way you don't know and come across as very arrogant to think you do or can

I know plenty of blk ppl, young and old, who have as much disdain for the American flag as they do the confederate flag and will not stand to salute it

blk ppl who feel the same way abt the American flag as many do abt the confederate flag?

They don't make a distinction in terms of what the america flag symbolizes to them vs the comfederate flag

And to try and pretend that *many* blk ppl see a difference in the two is being willfully naive

But the US flag *does* have the legitimacy of representing the current ruling government. The CSA not only doesn't exist, but it only ever existed as an effort to overthrow the US government in the Southern States. Just on those grounds alone the two flags can be importantly distinguished.

but he did say the U.S. flag atrocities aren't "wipe clean"

That flag means a lot of different thing(some good/some bad)to many nations, races, ethnicities across the globe

The U.S. flag flying when other countries all over the world needed humanitarian relief aide from earthquakes, tsunami, hurricanes etc.

The problem many of us black people here in the U.S. have is we can't look pass what it means to us.

The world revolves around us and our struggle, that's why many of us can not see things from different perspectives

because it all leads back to "Well black people in America ...etc,etc."

government which existed solely for the purpose of preserving slavery. It wasn't about anything else but that.

The American flag absolutely represented a slave society, but at least it has taken steps to correct that past, little by little, beginning with the Civil War. Same as the Union Jack, same as the French flag, and whatever you call the flags of Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and pretty much every country in the Western Hemisphere (yes, you too Canada.)

They're landmarks.

In the water on a raft and you see two boats, one with the Libyan flag and one with the U.S. flag - you'd probably bet better going to the American flag.

http://teachingamericanhistory.org/library/document/cornerstone-speech/

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth."

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_scarsec.asp

"The General Government, as the common agent, passed laws to carry into effect these stipulations of the States. For many years these laws were executed. But an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery, has led to a disregard of their obligations, and the laws of the General Government have ceased to effect the objects of the Constitution. The States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa, have enacted laws which either nullify the Acts of Congress or render useless any attempt to execute them. In many of these States the fugitive is discharged from service or labor claimed, and in none of them has the State Government complied with the stipulation made in the Constitution. The State of New Jersey, at an early day, passed a law in conformity with her constitutional obligation; but the current of anti-slavery feeling has led her more recently to enact laws which render inoperative the remedies provided by her own law and by the laws of Congress. In the State of New York even the right of transit for a slave has been denied by her tribunals; and the States of Ohio and Iowa have refused to surrender to justice fugitives charged with murder, and with inciting servile insurrection in the State of Virginia. Thus the constituted compact has been deliberately broken and disregarded by the non-slaveholding States, and the consequence follows that South Carolina is released from her obligation."

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_missec.asp

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin."

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_geosec.asp

"The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery. They have endeavored to weaken our security, to disturb our domestic peace and tranquility, and persistently refused to comply with their express constitutional obligations to us in reference to that property, and by the use of their power in the Federal Government have striven to deprive us of an equal enjoyment of the common Territories of the Republic. This hostile policy of our confederates has been pursued with every circumstance of aggravation which could arouse the passions and excite the hatred of our people, and has placed the two sections of the Union for many years past in the condition of virtual civil war."

http://avalon.law.yale.edu/19th_century/csa_texsec.asp

"Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated Union to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. She was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?

The controlling majority of the Federal Government, under various pretences and disguises, has so administered the same as to exclude the citizens of the Southern States, unless under odious and unconstitutional restrictions, from all the immense territory owned in common by all the States on the Pacific Ocean, for the avowed purpose of acquiring sufficient power in the common government to use it as a means of destroying the institutions of Texas and her sister slaveholding States."

No founding document or decree verbalizes the institution of slavery in this manner. There is a difference between being founded by white supremacists, and being founded on white supremacy.

so to say one type of white supremacy is better or worse than another is irrelevant as the system is still the same. If the founding white supremacists wanted to end slavery they could have. If they believed in equality Africans would have been a part of their circle. Neither of these is the case.

These excerpts simply illustrate that a pretty strong attitude of white supremacy gave birth to a much stronger form. Just as parents often produce stronger children.

increased slavery. So by not addressing slavery the American Flag was complicit and an accomplice in slavery.

The civil war was also not started to free slaves but to prevent the expansion and continued Southern dominance over the North financially and politically. Slaves were the reason for the dominance over the North but Northern whites wanted a bigger voice and more power not an end to their cash cow. Ending slavery was a key ear mark put into action after the start of the war to help win the war.

The American Flag is a symbol of being opportunistic and self serving. Which is what this country is all about.

in regulated text books?

For you and the person above, please research the Missouri Compromise(which I'm sure is in you history books). Please pay attention to the Slaved back loans and the ensuing panic in 1837 and 1839. Also of importance is Lincoln's old head(Stephen A Douglas) overreaching while trying to get some railroad money for his state and putting in place a deal to nullify the Missouri Compromise. This all sparked the Confederate states desire to finally make an act to leave as their monopoly over the government was waning.

i feel bad i work at a school & i don't stand for the pledge or tell my students to. they have to be silent tho & i always stand for the pledge for sporting events.

i always wondered why the american flag became a fashion staple this decade for the hip-hop crowd. i'll only wear one for the 4th, memorial or veterans day...maybe even halloween. hey i was born in another country.
