"Poll question: How many White Folks do you think use the N-word?"
I get the sense that most black people think that most white folks freely use the n-word disparagingly (let's leave out the white folks saying "nigga") in certain "safe" all white setting. I hope that's not true. What do you think?

never uses it. i thought he was declining to use the word when quoting a rap lyric b/c i was around. i gave him some props but he told me his parents and siblings are like that - he grew up never hearing the word in his house.

like, if we're the type who throws around derogatory words and slurs freely then we may be more likely to assume others do it. maybe we do that to make ourselves feel better. i dunno.

I guess I use this word alot. again, I don't use it more or less depending on whether women are around. I also use it alot non-derrogatorily like "hey bitches, what y'all bitches doing??!" with men and women.

I think this word is falling out my vocabulary but I can't say I would never use it.

I don't use it as a derogatory general term for homosexuals. I have checked people for using it like that. I will confess though I am probably not above using it if I feel like someone is acting like a punk. Im trying to do better.

alot of white people HE was around would say when they thought they were around safe company. This guy is far from a racist, believe me. Plus he wasn't speaking of friends of HIS...just what he would witness at workplaces, bars, etc.
It could be that more people say it but censor themselves around people who they assume don't. White people ostracize and shame other white people who say it so I suppose it's possible that people 'save it' for when they're around like-minded racists or something like that. But I'll say this....it is by FAR the most stigmatized word in language, even amongst white people in groups. Way more than any other slur, be it gender, race or orientation. 1 in 20 is generous in my experience.

they may not be sensitive or very enlightened to the issues of race relative to say.. somebody who's spent over a decade on OKP.. but they aren't overtly racists and generally it's not acceptable in any of my circles...
The one time I was a child and used it against my best friend was purely out of ignorance and it is something that I forever regret.

Who still strongly ID as Italian, Polish, Eastern European, say it amongst themselves, then a good deal of southern and rural White folks. But I still don't think even adding all those groups, considering all the White people in this country, that's it's more than 30 percent who say "-er"
